Today is the Feast Eve of St. Marcellinus:

As a third-century pope, Marcellinus was discovered publicly offering sacrifices to Roman gods, including Jupiter and Saturn. Several hundred angry bishops attempted to oust him for this but were condemned to death for their efforts. This incident helped plant the seed for the eventual development of the Church's doctrine of papal infallibility, meaning that the pope cannot err when defining matters of Christian faith or morals.

What I want to know is, who were the people doing the "putting to death" and why did they take the pope's side?

So having a possible closet Nazi and a pedophile sympathizer is just SOP? My goodness. I never suspected. Ah, for the days when things required a believer to pay attention--like when they had three popes at once. You need permission for something unusual? You need three writs!
