So, earlier in the week, I was in Tractor Supply, looking, as it happened, for snow boots, my boots having just lasted through last winter before commending their soles to that Big Shoe Factory in the Sky.

I didn't find any snow boots -- muck boots, yes; snow boots, no. But! They were having a minor sale on -- dungarees. Yes, dungarees, not jeans. Mens dungarees, in fact.

As it happened, I had just a few days previous decided that I could not pay $80 and more for women's jeans, and I said to myself, Self, back when you were Tall and Angular, you wore mens jeans. Now that you are Tall and Plump, this seems counter-intuitive, but, whatthehell, I'm here, the sale's here, there's a dressing room, and -- why not?

Besides, it's been years since I've owned a pair of dungarees.

My first try-on choice was 36x34 (I was skeptical of the 34, but that was the longest available). Turned out they were wonderfully long enough, but -- 36 had been. . .optimistic.

Thirty-eight by 34, however, fit like a dream. And the pockets! Even a handy cellphone pocket.

Plus -- they were priced considerably less than $80.

So, I bought myself a pair of nice grey dungarees -- and today, I'm wearing them.

They fit like I've been wearing them for years. High-waisted, long legs -- and -- did I mention? -- the pockets!

So, it looks like I'm back to cross-dressing.

And, did I mention the pockets?

Never mind the "girl's clothes" "boy's clothes" nonsense. The only criteria should be: "Does it work for what I need?" If the answer is 'yes,' nuff said.

Pockets! I was watching a little mini fashion show of some subtle geeky clothing, and one of the definite features was many pockets. On the jackets and on the dresses.

Jeans

So when I was very young and a starting student, I found that the JC Penney in Tucson AZ carried all sizes of jeans. So, I was finally able to get jeans that actually fit. With the length shorter than the girth.

But since then, Most of the slacks in my size don't come with pockets. Luckily for me, I have lots of fabric that comes off of the length & have been making pockets. (Did I mention my sewing skills?)

Anyway, congratulations on getting clothing that fits.

mens jeans have always fit better, made better, hardier material and they cost less... its a no brainer.

So then, what are dungarees if they differ from jeans? I have only encountered the word in books, and that rarely.

I am fortunate in my sewing skills.

Silly me. I was thinking that Dungarees were the Mr. Green-Jeans overalls. Thank you for the post that taught me that Dungaree, and denim (De Nime or Of Nime) are both terms describing the cloth.

You are still lucky that you can find any type of slacks in fabric that isn't that stretch material that I am currently wearing. Only one pair of pockets, but they do come in (what for other people would be) pedal pusher length. [Pedal pusher probably means pants that you can wear while pedaling a bicycle.]

Montgomery Wards had dungarees. Sears had jeans. (Levis and Wrangler) BUT, they also had a Sears branded dungaree and overalls by many people including St. Joseph Missouri's own "Big Smith" brand.

Many moons later, all I can wear are Wranglers, as their sizing has not changed over the years

Thanks for the links.
I think I'm about six months younger than you are, but I grew up in Kentucky, where no one wore dungarees. Until I was in high school no one wore jeans, either. They wore denim trousers. Or perhaps denim pants, if they were of my generation and not my parents.
(My mother grew up in south Alabama where all the children wore overalls whenever they weren't in school or church. She dressed me the same, until I was school-age, at which point overalls weren't available in older-than-preschool sizes.)
