On the occasion of Trooper's 15th Birthday
Saturday, December 14th, 2024 09:15 amSaturday. Bright and cold, but most importantly? It is December 14.
This is Trooper's 15th birthday. The celebrations began early with the Birthday Cat taking his place on the Living Room Observation Post, where, after careful study, he was able to report with confidence that the garden, the lawn, and the maple trees were correctly placed. He then withdrew to share a teaching breakfast with his grandson. He's now asleep on the copilot's chair.
In Shameless Self-Promotion, Sea Wrack and Changewinds PAPERBACK retains the coveted #1 New Release banner for its placement in Fantasy Short Stories. The EBOOK edition, which drops on December 17, rejoices in 392 total preorders.
Today, is all about reading galleys, interspersed with one's duty to the cats, changing the bed, and figuring out what's for lunch. (Breakfast, for those keeping score, was oatmeal with walnuts and raisins, because Food is Boring. It strikes me that I would not make a very good Haosa.)
Possibly, I'll knock off early and watch "Red One." Or, yanno, not.
Which leads to the question -- What's your favorite seasonal movie? I rather liked "While You Were Sleeping," and I know there's much fondness for "Die Hard" -- but, else?

Christmas movies
Date: 2024-12-14 06:05 pm (UTC)I'm partial to Mrs. Santa Claus, a somewhat obscure musical from Hallmark starring Angela Lansbury as the lady in question, Terence Mann as the obligatory Scrooge-ish toymaker, and Charles Durning in a relatively small role as Santa himself. The setting is a decidedly multi-ethnic and suffrage-minded New York just before Christmas in 1910, and the excellent music and songs are from Jerry Herman (of Mame fame). This was made for TV in 1996, did well at the time, but somehow has not been recognized as the classic it ought to be considered.

Date: 2024-12-15 10:24 am (UTC)My favourite Christmas reading, which is much more prevalent during this time of year, is my collection of Janet Kagan Christmas stories. I have been meaning to mention to you for years now that I exchanged a few letters with Janet many years ago (my now ex-husband set that up for me, best Christmas present ever!) and when I mentioned to her that I also really enjoyed your Liaden universe she told me that you and Steve were lovely people and I might want to write to you too. That was at a time in my life when life itself was too much so it never happened but I have lovely memories of interacting with Janet before she sadly died.
Best wishes, Patricia
