I have only recently come into possession of an exceptionally cool coloring book. My plan had been to use colored pencils on these, but the patterns are printed on a sort of coated rice paper that doesn't take the pencil well.

Does anybody have experience with felt tip coloring pens? Can you recommend a good, not-ruinously-expensive set?

I've always used Crayola, but I believe certain of their colors are not lightfast. This could be issueful if you plan to display the work after. Plus, they don't dry fast, so you can have smearing issues. If the paper texture is an issue, have you thought of doing transfers to a more appropriate sort of paper? Felt tipped pens or markers aren't a very good medium for shading. You can do it, but it's a bit tricky/messy.

I color materials (a lot) for my speech therapy kids. I love Tombo Watercolor Markers. They have a brush tip and a hard tip. They are pricey but worth it.

I think these are actually designed for crayons, which, because they're waxy, naturally blend well. If you don't want to use crayons, oil pastels might work well. You can get a pretty basic set of 12 for not much money. If you really want to try pencils, use Prismacolor (make sure you get the regular ones, not the Verithin). They are made with an oil blend lead that goes on very smoothly and also blends well, when shading from one color to another. They aren't cheap, but they are worth the cost. You can get sets of 12, 24, 36, or 48, I think, depending on how many hues you really want. I use them with all my favorite coloring books!

Aha! I've searched these out on the web, and they look like the Very Thing. And only last evening I'd been saying to [livejournal.com profile] kinzel that I needed pencils that were smoother. He suggested pastel pencils, but oil-blended lead -- that's the ticket, I'll bet.

Thanks!

One of the horror stories we art students were warned about was being careful of our materials. Not just Van Gogh-- Back in the 70s there was an artist working solely in permanent felt markers on paper and other mediums. He contracted a neurological condition from being bent over those tips all the time and breathing the fumes.

So...either don't bend so low you snort the stuff, or use with good ventilation!

(Here ends the lesson.)
