One thing to keep in mind is that gel takes a bit of drying, especially if the page is shiny.

I have to agree that Silver On Black should look outstanding. This being different than in Crystal Soldier, who I wonder made The Decision to use black, and most curious to know their reasoning. Shawna

I've been hit by the black title page thing (well, nearly-black); it's a pain. Silver gel pens aren't actually terribly good at showing up on black, they run out insanely fast when you're using them for writing (rapid strokes, I guess -- the suspended particles that make the gel look silvery take a lot longer to move from the gel reservoir down into the nylon brush), and the writing looks rather crap.

In the end I wound up doing the title page thing (and will bug Golden Gryphon just in case they repeat this design cock-up on my next book).

Charlie,

thanks much for the input on this... the thing is that neither of us is good at signing on the borders of things, especially not facing six hundred or so books at once. It appears there's a blank page we can use... but we're going to drop a note in with these telling people where to find the signatures...

And yes, someone needs to let the art department know that pretty isn't always practical...

If you've got a couple of author copies, how about using one of 'em as a test piece? See if your silver gel pen will do the job -- maybe they've improved since I tried them.

We have, alas, the Exact Number of pre-ordered books on hand, no extras. (You don't wanna know.) But. Your comment reminded me that my experience with the metallic gel pens is that the glitter gums up the tip really fast -- and then the pen skips. Don't want that, either.

Table of contents is probably the better part of valor...

Apologies for not answering in the poll, but I couldn't get it to work (probably too late). As a library worker and avid reader, I'd recommend signing on a random page. Black title pages are a pain on which to record information (I keep looking for a white-out pen to put in the material and call numbers).
