Choices, choices

I have these proposals to finish up, so we can hopefully go to contract and have more work in future. Work in future is good, right?

Also, the day-job is in a slight mess because, in addition to everyday administrivia, I'm supervising three searches, which mostly has to do with opening envelopes, stamping dates, entering data and filing, so it sounds a lot of fancier than it is. One of the searches is at deadline, and, the tribe of wandering scholars being no different than, say, science fiction writers in matters of timing, almost everyone who is interested in the position has waited until the black, bitter end to submit their application.

Thursday, the number of applications on file doubled. Friday, which I took off in order to deal with a health issue, and whereby hangs a tale, was the deadline. The original plan -- to go in Saturday and enter data -- was vetoed by my faculty, who said that Monday was soon enough. However, the events of Friday have thrown a hex wrench into that -- I'll need to be gone for a couple hours, at least, in the middle of the day tomorrow -- so I thought I'd mosey in today and at least open envelopes, and sort things into data-entry-ready piles.

Except...my hands hurt. And, yanno, the proposals. And, opening envelopes hurts. Actually, you know what hurts? Stamping the date. Who'd've thought, right? And I hate the thought of all those applications stacked up, glowering. Sigh. Better part of valor probably really is to go in an hour early tomorrow, come back after the medical adventure, and work late. It'll put everything else back, and the key to day-job is to stay caught up, but -- argh.

So, what's everybody else doing today?
