From the Department of Useless Projects
Thursday, October 5th, 2006 11:57 amI made a slideshow! Go me! It's here.
What I'll use it for, or why I need it, ghod knows, but, still -- a slideshow!
From the Department of Bemusement: My old (old, old) job is advertised in today's newspaper, only now the applicant must have a bachelor's degree in journalism. Ah, well...
It's a bright, beautiful, and breezy day; and I have not yet taken my walk, due to slideshow! Must remedy that...

Date: 2006-10-06 12:22 pm (UTC)Three minutes and you're in with a freebie account! Do it!
...look up someone you know at the old place (networking contact) to give you the "current situation" and help you get your res to the hiring manager.
This is good advice, but not as easy as it looks in this case. The people I worked with Back When have all been fired and/or early retired in past desperate attempts to save money and preserve the paper(s) (one in Waterville, one in Augusta, one in Portland)and keep them under local management. This failed, and all three papers are now owned by a newspaper company based in Seattle.

Date: 2006-10-09 02:22 am (UTC)Sorry to hear the paper's story, so many companies have gone through similar gyrations. I've been with places that have gbeen sold and seen good teams scattered.
Hope your application for the part time job now turned full time pans out!
Get the Job
Date: 2006-10-06 04:48 am (UTC)One Question? Why did you leave that job?
Okay two? Why do you want it again?

Re: Get the Job
Date: 2006-10-06 12:17 pm (UTC)It left me. I was low copyeditor on the totem pole and the Sentinel was in the midst of its...third?... bloodbath in a frantic effort to save money. Didn't work, and shortly after it was sold -- and sold again.
Okay two? Why do you want it again?
Not sure that I do. I liked the job and I was good at it. I don't, however, think it would be the same without Phil to grouch at me, and the paper running a couple thigh bones short of a whole skeleton.
Read Barnburner and Gunshy yet?
Re: Get the Job
Date: 2006-10-07 09:59 pm (UTC)I also would like to echo a previous commentor's comment--I've been told that, despite my lack of Ye Olde Parchmente certifying me as a Professional Journalist, I could probably land a decent job at a daily now that I've passed the 10-year mark as a freelancer.
