The UPS Guy came to the door just as [livejournal.com profile] kinzel and I were sitting down to lunch, and delivered unto us the cover flats for the Ace edition of Crystal Soldier. It's an interesting cover, though the authors are somewhat bemused to learn from the enclosed sales points that Soldier is the sequel to Balance of Trade.

Wow - someone in the marketing department needs a Liaden timeline in the worst way!

{humbly raising hand}

I wouldn't mind being pointed in the direction of a timeline. I gave up (temporarily) on I Dare because there's too much of a gap between that and Agent of Change. I'm not quite sure what comes between them. Plan B most definitely - but another as well?

I read Scout's Progress instead. FWIW, looking at the covers of both Crystal Soldier and Balance of Trade in the bookstore today, I was wondering if they were sequential myself. There is a certain similarity in the pose and presence of the man who is prominent therein on both covers.

No problem. The easiest place to start is http://www.korval.com/faqliad.htm Which is the Liaden faq. According to it:

For those who like to read things in "universe order," that would be: Local Custom, Scout's Progress, Conflict of Honors, Agent of Change, Carpe Diem, Plan B, I Dare.

If you were to update this to current books, Crystal Soldier and Crystal Dragon are the first two, taking place many many moons before all of the other books.

It's been a little while since I've read Balance of Trade but while it's in the same universe, it really doesn't "fit" with the rest of the books in that the main characters aren't the same.

At the moment, the fact that it isn't directly connected is a plus, to my view. I was getting frustrated with I Dare because it was dependent on information which was not available to me. I'm going to have to force my way through that bar, though, 'cause I have to find out what happens to Val and Miri.

Think there's a reading order at the Liaden wiki. Hang on a sec...

OK, sorted by internal chronological order (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liaden_universe#History_of_the_series)

Friends of Liad Generally Accepted Reading Order for the seven books in Agent of Change sequence can be found at the Liaden Universe(R) homepage (http://www.korval.com/liad.htm). You'll need to scroll down a bit.

There is, indeed. Which is really not fair to Jethri (the young man on the cover of Balance of Trade) or to Jela (the title character on the cover of Crystal Soldier). Despite both names starting with "J". *g*

I guess I'm a little dense. I hadn't noticed the sequel-ness...

Maybe it's the yellowness of the cover art.

I think what happened is that marketing got a tad confused. The contract is for three books. It just so happens that of those three books only the last two are in series.

Balance of Trade, she notes blandly, was originally thought to be a standalone.

And what is it thought to be now? The seed of another great oak bridge into the future (mixing metaphors madly)? Any crystal-balling about when we might see child of Bot (or is it RoBoT -- Recurrance of Balance of Trade?)

Well, see, we have a contract to write a sequel to Balance of Trade. If all goes well, it should be out in spring 2008.

Now if I can just learn to wait faster :-)

Thanks! I think I had seen something about a sequel, although I suspect even when I have the sequel in hand I may want more. Greedy little reader that I am.

Kick butt time...

Boy, you should ask your editor to kick some tushes down in promotion/ads. But I must admit, if that was the last Ace release, it may have been automatic to use the previous title as "Author of".

I like it. Hope it sells. It looks very desert-ty with the strong yellows.

I don't mind the "Author of..." on the front, but the flats came with the sell points still attached. Those things in the book's favor that the sales folken tell the bookstores? That's where it said Sequel to Balance of Trade, which is...Just. Wrong.

I hope it sells, too *g*

well, if it's any consolation I've worked in two different bookstores and have NEVER seen sell points for any books. Mostly the bookstores I've worked at hoped that the staff could get the books in the right place on the shelf. If they were really lucky they'd actually get a reader who could talk intelligently about some of the books. Even at that I was told I talk to much.

Granted this was WaldenBooks in the 80s and B Dalton in the 90's so YMMV. It's possible with smaller bookstores the staff are actually given those things to read.

Oh, dear...any chance to get it changed, or have they gone out?

I remember my career dying with my "floating indian maiden" fantasy/horror cover. Even people who liked my other books weren't sure they'd like it... .

Went out long ago, I'm afraid.

It's time to say the mantra to yourselves.... "The Independents know us. The Independents will save us from the Little Death of fear...We face this and let it flow around us, and remain untouched by it."

Or something like that. If you have an herb shop within driving distance, there are spells to reverse luck about certain things...(Allie research is so much fun!)

off-topic but ... I really like your attack gargoyle. Looks like you're holding it back before releasing it on target.
