My keyboard blew up, spectacularly, taking the contents of my inbox with it into the flames.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Keyboards cost $9.99 at Staples. This keyboard cost three hundred small and made it possible for me to write without pain. Damn it! Keyboard, macros, mail -- poof!

Yeah, yeah. The Art Ephemeral. Somebody call Edger...

I'm sure he would be able to encourage a good sturdy keyboard for you.

It will only take a couple of centuries...

Ouch. My sympathies. Out of curiosity, what kind of keyboard was it?

A Kinesis contoured keyboard (http://www.kinesis-ergo.com/). This is my second Kinesis keyboard and I was feeling v. depressed, not only because of the loss and the expense and all the rest of it, but because I'd just bought it!, why, no more than a year ago.

Ahem.

That would've been January 4, 2003.

*blush*

Reminds me of my previous two keyboards.

Old keyboard breaks down (s key stuck). Buy nice new keyboard with good collapsing spring switches. I get it in the evening, try it for a few minutes and go to bed.

The next day, while I'm at work, my teenage step-daughter spills a cup of water on it and fries it.

I order another keyboard just like it. In a few days it arrives. She didn't spill a glass of water on in it this time, she spilled a cup of soda on it the day after it arrived.

She's now forbidden to carry any liquids into the room where my computer is.

Maybe you should just invest in a keyboard like this:

Also out of curiosity -- how do you get a keyboard to literally blow up in such spectacular fashion? I mean, you wouldn't expect normal keyboard innards to be, well, explosive.

Lemmetelya, it ain't easy.

Actually, this particular keyboard has -- had -- a board and memory and all sorts of useful things in its innards. "Blew up," however, does paint the wrong picture. "Went entirely and flamboyantly insane, locked itself into a delete macro and commenced on a rampage through the mail program" is much more accurate.

Thank *ghod* I wasn't working on the book when it snapped.

I was wondering how a self-destructing keyboard could take your inbox with it.... I don't suppose there's any chance your e-mail provider could restore your inbox?

I am much distressed at the thought of writing causing you (physical)pain.

Well, it kinda goes with the territory. I learned how to type when I was 13 years old, on one of those black, upright Remington manuals, and I've been typing daily (some days for manymanymany hours) ever since. Forty years of that will take a toll...

I haven't often encountered another INTJ typ personality. I'm an engineer and once had to take a bunch of these tests....I've always been better "hidden" in a lab & kept away from customers.
