Weather mostly
Monday, January 7th, 2008 08:40 pmIt was 32F (0C) this morning when I left for work. The snow was sublimating, making for shifting white curtains of fog as I drove in toward the city. The river road was filled to overflowing with extra-white cotton balls, and making the turn into the road was a touch harrowing, because I couldn't see a handspan in front of my nose. Still, journey's end with no mishaps, and a glorious glimpse of soft rose sky over the fog-shrouded town of Winslow before I ducked inside the library and took up my duties for the day.
The funny thing about living in Maine is that I used to think that 32F was cold. This morning as I walked up from the parking lot to the library, my coat unzipped and my gloves in my pockets, I thought about how warm and springlike the morning was.

Date: 2008-01-08 02:14 am (UTC)I'm discovering the same thing about living in Iowa (after moving from WV this spring). I've not had a coat on yesterday or today because I was too hot (with the outside temps running in the upper 40s to low 50s). We're due to be back to more seasonable weather in another 36 hours or so (high to be in the low 30s and dropping thru the day on Wednesday). We were in Michigan a couple of weeks back, and I thought they were a bit wimpy there, as _everywhere_ we went was Way Too Hot, as far as I was concerned (and I'm usually the one who's cold in this family).
Oh, ditto with the nice fog layer from sublimating snow :-) (Now the freezing fog the last few weeks made for some pretty views once it lifted - this is just cold and damp)

Date: 2008-01-08 04:50 am (UTC)Speaking of Michigan weather:
1 week ago we had over a foot of snow.
Last Thursday we had a low of -9 and a high of 19 here in Ann Arbor. In fact, Ann Arbor was significantly colder than Escanaba (low 1, high 21) or Houghton (low 7, high 27) in the UP, which just seems wrong.
This Monday we hit a record high of 64 degrees.
Now we've got Thunderstorms expected through Tuesday, with a Tornado watch until 2am Tuesday and a high wind watch through noon.
By Wednesday it's supposed to be back down in the 30s again, with the snow starting back up again Thursday night.
These sorts of odd shifts are the norm here.

Date: 2008-01-08 03:09 pm (UTC)IA got the temps you got, but we managed to dodge most of the snow (we got, IIRC, about 6 inches out of that one), but got the winds and drifting.
I suspect it all comes down to "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes" *grin*

Date: 2008-01-08 06:56 pm (UTC)I grew up in Tucson. I've lived 17 years in the Bay Area. Cold? 65F is cold. I have to wear a sweater on summer evenings, around here.
32F? Parkas, sweater cap, scarf, gloves, boots, and probably long johns. Don't even ask me about snow. I mean, it's pretty, but...
