Sweet Baby Jane, what a day!

Woke up feeling pummeled and left for meatloaf by a series of unrecalled-but-disturbing dreams. Dragged my sorry carcass into work, where a goodly bunch of paperwork awaited my deft and healing touch. The posters which I had caused to be framed, yea classily, were hung this morning by the affable and very able Richard, and the hall is greatly improved. The stack of paperwork melted pretty quickly, but the furniture delivery, scheduled for eleven did not only not show at eleven, but the driver called from Pittsfield at 11:30 to say that he was on the way even then.

What with one thing and another, that meant I was late for the library's Last Tuesday Soup Party, which happens on -- wait for it -- the last Tuesday in January, but did eventually arrive and partake and have a general good time, arriving back in my office, settling to the dregs of my paperwork and chatting up [livejournal.com profile] kinzel on the IM when BOOM!! from outside my window and BOOM!! again.

There was then silence, and I had relaxed back into my work when:

BOOM!!BOOM!!

BOOM!!!!

rattled my window and my concentration.

I went downstairs and out into the front steps of the library, spied the group of students on the fourth floor of the math and chemistry building apparently throwing things off of that same balcony, went back inside and called my contact in math.

Not her kids, she thought. She transferred me to her ally in chemistry, who also thought it wasn't her kids, but would check.

Long story short, the children were having Fun With Dry Ice Bombs. It appeared, upon close questioning, that this project was...spontaneous, shall we say?

The chemistry contact shut them down, hard, and the campus passed the rest of the afternoon in peace. For which we were all duly thankful.

Speaking of random loud noises, when Wife and I were out for our afternoon walk, we heard a quite distinct gunshot, small-caliber variety. No sirens, so I assume somebody just got fed up with that damned squirrel gnawing on the eaves...

Random booms were pretty much part of the scenery when my husband was at WPI. Dry ice bombs were de riguer, and nearly anything that the various ChemE, Chemistry, etc. students thought sounded plausible was tried. It took a lot to get them excited. Four litres of nitroglycerin in glass bottles in a dorm room did it though. Much excitement - but no boom, thank goodness!

In my junior year dorm back in the 60's, some moron used to drop cans of soda down the buildings central well. As that was the era of bomb scares on campus, peoples nerves got very frazzed.

My first wake-up when I moved to Germany was at 5AM - the bed shook, windows rattled...but then nothing happened so I went back to sleep. No sooner, then a boom, boom, boom followed by a marching band coming down the street (it's now 6AM)

As it turned out, my village had a big cannon on the local hilltop and this was their way of starting whatever festival was going on at the time.
