...our coffeemaker died this morning.

I met Steve after work and we hit the two Marts (K and Wal, for those who don't live in places where these two options are ...your options), only to discover that a coffeemaker comparable to my beloved, and now deceased, Black and Decker Thermal Select Plus was not to be had in This Town. Came home and went online. Found that there was a Cuisinart that would salve my grief; and further found that it could be had at Home Depot, so I called Home Depot -- "We don't carry coffee pots!" the woman who answered the phone assured me. Hmm. Back to Google. Found the same machine at Kohls; tracked down the number of the store in Augusta and called them. Nope, none in-house; two on order, but no way of knowing when they'd arrive.

So, I ordered the dern thing on-line, and it will be here on Monday. Or Tuesday. I foresee breakfast tomorrow at Tim Horton's, but how I'll survive the weekend is a mystery.

No writing today. There are Reasons, even good ones, but it does make me sad when I don't do any work of a day.

For those gotta-have-it now (and coffee is not an option) moments I keep a supply of Rocket Chocolates

http://www.rocketchocolate.com/secure/index.php

While they have a large selection of options, the Chocolate Mint and the Dark Cherry are the clear popularity winners here.

I know it's not the same, but back in the days when I drank coffee, there was instant coffee? As I remember, the freeze-dried was pretty good. I'd recommend Nescafe Excella, but while that freeze-dried dark ground coffee is widely available and popular in Japan, for some reason it used to not be available in the United States.

That's a strange response from Home Depot, as all of the ones near Seattle carry them.

I looked up the B&D coffeepot and it's the exact same coffeemaker Jack had. In fact, he had two of them*, and for all I know, they're in rural New Mexico now.

You know, a French press coffeepot would hold you over the weekend AND be nice and portable for a road trip. I'm just sayin'...

*no doubt anticipating your angst

A Melitta cone is a good thing to have around for times when the power is out, or the coffeepot dies, etc.

I've had good luck finding them in hardware stores, supermarkets, and you might be lucky at one of the Marts.

French Press is another good idea, as mentioned in a previous comment.

This would be why Mike uses a french press. And stocks a spare. In fact, we usually have one in the car, as well as a hot pot, in case you're ever in need . . . say at a cat show or a con. Just ask.

Wish I'd seen this sooner...

Gevalia gives coffee makers away to new customers. Just buy an initial order of coffee and get the coffee maker, free.

Yes, it's really free. One doesn't have to buy additional coffee (although one does have to cancel future, automatic deliveries).

When I needed a coffee maker a couple of years ago I went this route, and received a very good coffee maker (a Braun drip, with self-start "alarm clock" function) as the free gift. And it truly was free -- as they said I could, I canceled future automatic coffee deliveries, and kept the coffee maker.

(I also liked their coffee enough to buy more later on, but that's a separate issue.)

So if you don't like the coffre maker you ordered and send it back, you might consider this as an alternative.

Huh. I thought Tim Horton's was only available in Canada. Huh.

Haven't looked lately, but Folger's used to make coffee in a "tea" bag; foil-wrapped, single use, regular or decaf. Great for traveling/emergencies like this.

They still do, at least the Krogers in Murfreesboro, TN carries it. As well as a version put out by Maxwell House. I just got a box for my dear husband who occasionally needs another cup because somehow too much coffee disappears from the pot in the morning.

I, of course, have absolutely no idea how that happens. ::stares innocently at ceiling whilst plucking lace on sleeves back into place and taking another sip of coffee from an elegant large cup::

I definitely agree--all you need is boiling water. I have two of the mini ones that fit on top of a coffee cup.

Hey, Seattle does not function without coffee. When we moved up here from Colorado I told my husband we had moved to the land of the Nephelim. Everyone tailgates and nobody eats bagels! Jenny from WA (now that is!)
