One of the things that happens to me when I write for extended periods of time, like I did this past weekend, is that I get into what I'll call Writer's High. It's a place where wit is on...and it's hard to turn off. Really hard to turn off. May I just say that nobody likes a smart-ass secretary?

At least, I'm keeping the faculty awake.

Also, from the Department of Why Don't We Think These Things Through -- the college some months ago decided to institute a tier system for its extracurricular events and meetings. The cream of these, the Marquee Event, is allowed no competition for its audience; the scheduling office will not schedule lesser events on a Marquee evening. The theory at work here is that, if there aren't four dozen little events going on, then Everyone will come to the Marquee Event. I leave it to the audience to calculate how likely this theory is to prove out.

In any case, since Marquee Events are so important and all, you'd think that there would be a list of the things in the scheduling office, so we, the humble, would know when not to schedule a lesser event.

Except there's not.

Not only that, but! Marquee Events being so top-tier, you'd think there would be a Special Protocol to publicize them to the greater community, wouldn't you?

You'd be wrong.

Also, pointing these lapses out? So not a good idea.

*Sigh*

Having been without a job for a few years now, I admit to a certain enjoyment of your struggles. I understand completely, mind you. But still, enjoyment, simply because I miss the vagaries of the workplace.

As to turning off your Writer's High: How do the faculty members react to your need for "balance"?

Pleased, as always, to be of service.

It depends on the faculty member. Some edge slooooowly away. Some notice nothing. A couple seem to enjoy the, um, sharper air.

One, however, is a consummate speaker of trash, and can't resist the urge to escalate. During our last conversation, I managed to disengage right before it came to the point of my seconds calling on theirs...

From where I sit, it seems like those college people should be really happy to have you, but what the heck do I know?

Reminds me of when I was getting contents insurance. There was a lower limit below which they were unable to insure me. They were not allowed to tell me what that limit was. Going up $1000 at a time was a waste of both their time and mine. But I also work in a University in a partial minion capacity so I understand to some extent.

Isn't that a deceptive business tactic? If you have a lower limit, but you refuse to reveal it, aren't you trying to trick your clients into over insuring?

Quite possibly. I don't think the guy at the end of the phone was responsible for it though. I try not to get angry at the people who don't deserve it.

So does your Writer's High turn on the wit because you write books in which witty conversation between characters is part of the milieu? If you wrote, say, murder mysteries, would the spillover take the form of fantasizing (one hopes) the demise of difficult people?

Most writers I know share an...enjoyment of the bon mot; the phrase correctly turned, the pun sprung perfectly -- often to the point of generating hurt feelings in their sparring partners -- or unwitting bystanders, for that matter -- because, to writers, the words are the thing. I think we spend so much time with imaginary people that we sometimes forget that sharp words cut in the real world, too.

And we're edging up on the 20 percent party! Go ahead and get your hats and noisemakers and everything ready, I think it'll be real soon now. Now what kind of a cake should we have, and who can we talk into making it?
