It was bookkeeping this evening. I'm still working on the sadly neglected closing out of SRM's fiscal year. Almost done, and then there's the filing.

Discovered today that most of what I wrote yesterday is Unnecessary to the Plot and needs to be yanked out and re-cast. I guess I should've thought longer.

A skunk dug up my newly planted irises. This is depressing me more than it reasonably ought, but dammit, I was looking forward to those iris. stupid skunk.

The trees of Maine are indulging in their annual ritual attempt to kill me with sex.

To make matters even more lively, my Borgia Tooth is acting up something terrible; my jawbone aches, my ear aches, my tooth aches. There must be a pair of pliers in this house somewhere.

Going to go find a cat and set up a snuggle station on the couch.

I wanted to tell you how much I adored Longeye

WOW WOW WOW WOW
I have not been buying books, but I got money and ran to buy yours. WOW WOW WOW - I see why the first one was soooo dark. This one could not have been done if the dark had not come before the light.

Will you ever visit that universe again?

Thank you for writing some of the best books out there.

Thank you for letting me know!

As for visiting that universe again -- I don't know. Right now, we're finishing up the contract for three Liaden novels -- Mouse and Dragon is the last book on that contract -- so we are going to need to start thinking about what we're going to pitch next, but we haven't gotten there yet.

did the skunk carry the iris off?

If so, I still have mine, readily available.

I would be happy to share them back to you, if you

like.

No, no! Your iris haven't been savaged and eaten; leave them right where they are!

Going to go find a cat and set up a snuggle station on the couch.

The very reason for having more than one cat -- someone will be in the mood, and if you have more than one in the mood you just get extra snuggles.

Wishing you some feel-betters.

Irises and Sinuses

(sorry, couldn't resist the subject line)

Did you try the hot pepper trick for the irises? That is, you cover 'em with powdered hot pepper as you plant (the cheap stuff from Marden's or CVS or Wal-Mart will work fine, just use a LOT of it) -- the critters don't like the taste and it discourages them unless they are really, really hungry. Also, it can help to put a thin layer of fine gravel as the very top layer of the planting. The shoots will come up through it no problem, but the critters don't like to dig through it. Nothing's a sure-fire cure -- I still lose some bulbs to squirrels -- but these two tricks help.

The tooth might be related to the tree sex -- excess junk in the sinuses can either cause or mimic a sinus infection which often causes referred pain to teeth. For me, a toothache is one of my spring "start taking allergy meds" signs. Can you try any allergy meds? Failing that....there's always the hot spicy Chinese mustard trick to help open the sinuses up.

I didn't know about the red pepper trick -- or the pea gravel -- thank you! I'm not a very good gardener; I just like flowers.

I took a Claritin last night and the toothache has indeed eased off, so I think we have causality here.

Before you Get A Pliers...

my jawbone aches, my ear aches, my tooth aches.
Before you go to a dentist person about the tooth, reconsider that everything you describe (jaw, tooth, and ear pain) can all be caused by enflamed sinuses. I also get these problems, and the ear aches are a recent joyful addition. (The troubled sinus tissue presses on nerves causing the pain in other areas of head. Several ways to tell if tooth pain is sinus related, if taking your sinus medication also alleviates the tooth/ear/jaw pain.

I actually made a dentist appointment, was embarrassed when I couldn't identify the exact tooth that hurt (all of them?) and he told me about the sinus connection.

Claritin seems to have addressed the toothache along with the other symptoms. So! I guess I'm taking Claritin for the next little while.

I did once go to a dentist and told him that every tooth in my mouth was rotten. Well, no; I just had a Massive Sinus Infection. Toothache with the allergies are a new feature, sigh...

I hear ya. After 10 years of that combo, this year the ears have joined the circus. Sometimes I feel like a 2 year old walking around holding my ears. Why yes, I did take my Claritin today. Low pressure systems also affect my sinuses, so if it's going to rain, I'm in pain. But getting dizzy on top of it is just the pits, thankfully the ears don't join the fray very often, yet.

I had massive toothache one time and mentioned it to my chiropractrix[1] when I had an appointment, she felt around my jaw and found that it was misplaced and re-seated it and it solved the problem. That isn't always the cause, of course, but it was enlightening to know that sometimes such things are due to a different cause from the obvious.

[1] In the UK chiropractors are registered. It's a self-regulating body, but that keeps them very concerned that they are properly qualified and trained and don't get malpractice suits, because they know that if things get out of hand the government can and will take control and they will all be out of jobs. I've heard that in some other countries they aren't registered or licenced...

Do you need more iris? You didn't specify if digging up was the only indignity or they were also consumed. I could send you a dozen or three if you like purple ones. Had borers in the others but these guys (see icon) cannot be killed. Eaten by hordes of ravenous squirrels has happened here however.

It's kind of you to offer. I need to do a regrouping session with Steve, who was not entirely sanguine about the iris in the first place. .

Iris

What kind of iris? Probably not Dutch or English, they're bulbous and planted in the fall. The picture, not from you, looked like German, bearded, iris. They have not terribly tasty looking rhizomes; hardly a desirable target. Did you use bone or fish or cottonseed meal? Organic fertilizers can be very interesting to animals; which may pose a dilemma for anyone who has pets but does not have a fenced garden.

What kind of iris?

Well, that's the heartbreaker. Jo's grandmother's iris, which had outgrown their bed, so Jo was thinning and offering the cthulhu bits rhizomes to people who knew how to value what she called "old" iris. The grandmother in question has some while ago left us and I wouldn't have taken the rhizomes if I'd thought for a second that there was an animal out there who ate the dern things.

Sinuses and tooth problems

Occasionally when I complain to my dentist about problems with my bite, he will ask if I am having sinus problems. If I tell him I am, he ever so helpfully reminds me that inflamed sinuses can cause teeth in your upper jaw to shift position, thereby causing a misalignment or a narrowing of ones bite. Sigh! Putting up with a sinus infection or stuffy sinuses is bad enough; one REALLY does not need tooth problems on top of it.
My sympathies to you!
