rolanni: (Marvin's not happy)

Every day for the past three days, exactly at 10:04 a.m., I have received a robo-call here at the day-job, sternly explaining that this is the second warning that the factory warranty on my vehicle is about to expire.

*Looks at 1997 Nissan. Expires of The Stoopid.*

In any case, Tired Of It Now. Really, really Tired of It Now.

There was a story in the paper about such robo-calls, discussing whether or not they were a complete fraud. NYT maybe? Sadly, the janitors tossed the paper last night.

I have been getting the same one twice a day. When it starts, press 2 and hang up. 2 is supposed to remove you from their list.

This has nothing to do with the robo-calls - Just thought you'd enjoy reading Neil Gaiman's discussion on authors and readers..

We get those at my workplace, too.

If there is actually a person on the line, we turn the call over to my boss, who is also a lawyer.

But when we hear the robot, we hang up.

Press 1 and tell them you want their warranty. Ask them to mail you a description of what it covers so you can look it over. Keep insisting on that; they'll get sufficiently annoyed to stop calling you.

The idiots behind the calls made the mistake of dialing members of congress. Repeatedly. Including a teleconference number being used in a congressional hearing.

Thus no surprise that as reported in the news this week, several state Attorneys General are investigating under deception/fraud, FTC over failure to observe the Do Not Call registry, and congress is considering legislation.

Payback. Priceless.

(here's hoping they actually ram it through, wording intentional and used with extreme malice)

Breaking news, FTC just filed suit in Federal court to block robocalls pushing vehicle warranty "extensions." Suit filed against both the telemarketing company making the calls and the warranty company that hired them.

I get these on my cel. Repeatedly and since I don't answer calls if I don't recognize the number I get a lot of voice mails.

Annoying thing? I don't even OWN a vehicle!

We've been getting them for ages. Now they also come on my cell phone and my business phone. I always just hang up the second I know it's not a real person on line. I don't care who they are. If it's not important enough for a real person to call me, it's not important enough for me to worry about.

I've done the pressing '2' thing. Didn't make a bit of difference.

And yeah. Getting REAL sick of it.

I've been getting them for a couple of years. Also ones for refinancing my credit card balance (which is nonexistant, and the occasional mortgage one (also nonexistant). Originally these had numbers that came up on my caller ID - Florida area code. When I called the FCC to complain as I am on a do not call list, they asked me to report the number. About that time thy switched over to blocked numbers, or numbers that do not accept incoming calls. Apparently without a number that accepts incoming calls the FCC can do nothing. Seems that the garbage purveyors have discovered that 'do not call' is as effective as wet kleenex. From the wording, I would guess that they are preditory in nature, designed to panic non alert recipients into giving out all sorts of sensitive info.

I get those -- though not quite that regularly -- and I don't even have a vehicle. By now, I can recognize the message and hang up within half a word. I also get the one about my eligibility for a lower interest rate on my nonexistent credit card or mortgage. The latest is one promising huge returns if I have $10K to invest in the next week: I don't think so, thanks.

I got one of those tuesday on my cell, and I am reporting it since I am on all of the do not call registries.

Me, too! (or is it me three, me four, or...)

I'm sick of these calls, too, and really hope something comes of this.

On a related (sort of) note: It had seemed that spam email had really decreased to almost tolerable levels several months ago, but now it seems to be worse than ever. Anyone found a solution?

I heard a while back that an isp had found and removed a major spambot source (sorry, don't remember more detail). I'm guessing that those in question were down for a while, but are now back on line.

yeah, the feds have gotten particularly ticked because they're also calling people on the "do not call" list.

We've got them here, too - on all of our numbers, which are all on the Do Not Call registry.

My husband has picked up the phone for a couple of them. They hang up when he asks them which vehicle they are calling about.

For the record, we've got a 2001 Aztek with 150K on it, and a 2002 Windstar with 100K on it. And our address and phone numbers have changed since we bought either of them :->
