Book Recommendation

I usually don't review science fiction or fantasy books here, on account of I know 'way too many science fiction and fantasy authors, that being the wages of sin having been Executive Director/Vice President/President of SFWA.

In fact, I know Patricia Wrede slightly. She's a very nice lady with a good deal of common sense, and if you're ever at a con where she's a panelist, it'll be worth your time to go and listen to what she says.

Pat has written a lovely, lovely book called Thirteenth Child, which I've just finished reading. The world-building is marvelous; the narrator's voice (yes, it's an "I" book -- deal) is pitch-perfect, and by the time you're finished reading the first page you're in-world so solid that coming out of the book is a little disconcerting.

Man, I wish I could write like that.

Y'all need to read this book. Really.

Thank you for the recommendation! I will add it to my to-read list.

In reference to your reading list in the previous post, I finally found and finished Mirable. I can now claim to have read all of Kagan's books, despite their OOP status. I have to say that the revised version of Hellspark is still my favorite.

It was lovely, wasn't it? I sat down to read one chapter and finished it a few hours later.

I read it four times in a row, and my mother (who doesn't usually read fantasy) read it twice. Then I loaned it to a friend...

Man, I wish I could write like that

I read it, and loved the world-building. Wasn't quite so fond of the story, but read it with a fever of 103, and would probably be happier with it now. (Not generally happy with much when badly fevered.)
Oldest child read it, and promptly recommended it to friends. Couldn't loan it to friends, as youngest child was reading it. Youngest has stamped it with name, and is in process of pushing it on friends.
Very nice book.

Pat has that talent, in spades. I was just re-reading the Lyra books.

On the other hand, "The man who was not Terrence O'Grady had come quietly."

Never say you don't write like that.

its a laying in a hammock kind of read, just put one foot over the side and give a gentle push and go back to reading.

Loved what she did to her grumpy uncle and how her parents defended her.

I like Wrede's books quite a bit. DH told me this one ends on a cliffhanger though, right? I'm going to wait for the next one to come out before I start this one.

As for me, you do write like that. I was just commenting on my goodreads account how much I love your world building.

Oh, I don't think it ends on a cliffhanger at all. Clearly, things are moving forward, and there are challenges ahead in the greater story arc, but the book-problem solves out nicely.

Thanks to you mentioning this book in an earlier post, I got a copy and read it last weekend. Loved it, and am hoping it's the first of a series 'cause I want to find out what happens next! I've enjoyed all of Patricia Wrede's books (I'm fairly sure I've read them all, though it's been a while for some of them). My only complaint is that she writes too slowly! (I could say the same about you and Steve, but I won't. LOL!)

Coincidentally ...

That was included in our high school library's latest shipment of books, I started reading it during a slow time today and by the time I got to the end of the first chapter I was thinking that it might well be her best work. I had to leave it there, however - it isn't processed yet.

Thanks for the reminder. Must go and get this book.

Was lucky enough to see her at Worldcon and got to listen to her read the first chapter(s). Inside, I was squeeing. Lovely down-to-earth person.

You DO write like that! I get so engrossed in your stories that I dream about the characters. Weird, I know, but that's how much you and Steve bring me into your world!

You DO write like that. Your books are my rainy Sunday, off sick from work, being lazy, read on the bus, train, plane, take on holidays, never ever lend to anybody, never ever put back on the shelf, books... and I read a lot of books.

You write like yourselves.

When I treat myself to a Steve-and-Sharon book, I treat myself to Really Good Stuff. When I treat myself to a Pat Wrede book, I treat myself to Really Good Stuff. Not the same really good stuff, but really good stuff, all up high.

As in - family races bookmarks through the new books, high.

I read Thirteenth Child a couple of weeks ago and very much enjoyed it.

When it comes to writing books that suck the reader into their world, I'd say you do write like that. Your writing is different from hers in other ways, but you're both authors whose books are hard for me to put down before the end.
