I usually don't review science fiction or fantasy books here, on account of I know 'way too many science fiction and fantasy authors, that being the wages of sin having been Executive Director/Vice President/President of SFWA.
In fact, I know Patricia Wrede slightly. She's a very nice lady with a good deal of common sense, and if you're ever at a con where she's a panelist, it'll be worth your time to go and listen to what she says.
Pat has written a lovely, lovely book called Thirteenth Child, which I've just finished reading. The world-building is marvelous; the narrator's voice (yes, it's an "I" book -- deal) is pitch-perfect, and by the time you're finished reading the first page you're in-world so solid that coming out of the book is a little disconcerting.
Man, I wish I could write like that.
Y'all need to read this book. Really.
