I'm really hoping that somebody forgot about turning off a coffeemaker, though at this point the How pales beside the fact that there are six people out of work in Vassalboro, a business gone, and the owner unlikely to rebuild.

I hope so too, but it seems so unlikely. How completely awful.

(OTOH, that's a really beautiful icon....)

Well, from the little info available, at least there doesn't seem to be "spontaneous combustion of an insurance policy" in the picture . . .

Not that such things ever happen in Maine.

He didn't have insurance? How could he be doing business operating a restaurant without fire insurance? *facepalms*

But yeah, considering the other stuff going on, this is what we call an innnnteresting unfolding story.

I don't know what local ordinances say about it, but if he owns the building and contents outright and has insurance to cover anyone working there (separate thing from building insurance) I'd consider it his problem, not anyone else's. As far as I am aware in England you only need to have insurance to cover debts and third-party ("third-party" in this case includes staff and customers) damage and injury (if you have mortgage then lending bank will insist on insurance to cover loan -- and that is generally a lot less than price of building if sold because large amount of price is cost of land and right to build there).

Insurance of business for loss of income etc. due to fire or other damage is another thing altogether, and again is optional (and can cost a lot).

Blech! I don't know if I'm hoping for an accident or hoping for a felony. Either way - yeah, that sucks, for a lot of people.

I hope the employees remembered to put their shirts on. I know how sensitive some people are about that sort of stuff.

I know, cheap shot.

I think the place was clothed at the time . . .

Considering no insurance, I'd suspect arson. Seems some zealots feel violence and mayhem is justified nowadays. Oh well, I was looking forwad to visiting the place next time I was in the area.

One would hope that it was just an accident of some sort, although if the State Fire Marshal is there, it seems suspicious.

I wish people would put their morality back in their own closets and let the rest of us keep our own. If you don't like topless waitstaff, don't patronize the Topless Coffee Shoppe; if you don't like abortion, don't have one; if you're against same-sex marriage, don't marry someone of the same sex; etc. Sometimes I think people will never really get the point of individual liberty. How depressing!

State Fire Marshal comes in on just about any fire that doesn't show a clear and non-criminal cause.

As for the rest . . . yeah.

At least no tops were there to be injured.

(Sorry, too much caffeine.)

Such a sad thing to see -- I've enjoyed the vicarious thrills of reading your little tidbits about the topless cafe. I'm saddened for those that lost their jobs and for the owners as well.

Just sad.

I'm not sad. I'm not hopeful. I haven't and probably wouldn't visit the place;

But I AM ANGRY;
that someone else seems to think it is their RIGHT to dictate to me and mine what we should and should not see, hear, eat, and drink.

I am out-raged enough to inquire; is there an address or contact to whom we can send donations to help re-build? I am sick to death of others deciding "For ME'!!!
