Five Things Make a Post

1. Slept 'til nine; now there's a rare luxury.

2. It's raining, so I guess the folks at the Waterville Art Fest knew Something when they decided to move the festival one day up, to Sunday. It's...possible that I'll go downtown and walk around, but perhaps not likely. Steve has finished his read of Carousel Tides and I really need to get on the revisions. It's been nice, goofing off; and I hope my brain has recovered from the abuse I've heaped upon it over the last couple years. We'll see, I guess.

3. The Hexapuma Report is cautious optimism. He's taking his medicine, and we moved the stool that had been over the water fountain since 'way, 'way before there were Pumas in the household. I noticed him drinking like a normal cat at least once yesterday. We need to get to the store this weekend, and yogurt is on the list. Max! had used to adore blueberry yogurt, so I hold some hope that Hex will like him some of the straight stuff.

3a. Someone down in yesterday's cat-thread (zola?) said that her cat with Tufts Between the Toes(tm) had a slidy time at the drinking fountain. We have one of those "dirt trapper" mats, made of strands of rough woven plastic, by the water bowl, which seems to minimize slippage; it's tough, too.

Not unfortunately a good review, although I'm not sure it was fair to expect the Liaden universe development in a world that clearly isn't.

I'm not sure this happens every time you click that review link but I was quite amused to find that the relevance gremlins had associated a link to the Steve Miller Band with the article.

There are very few good reviews of Duainfey. I was amused by the assertion that "nothing happens."

Ooh, "it's not Liaden!" Ya think? And it has (whisper it!) sex in it! That's not right!

Apart from a similarity of names I'm rather wondering whether they've actually read the same book I read: I don't remember the Wood Wise being "hobbit-like" (not small, don't live in holes, don't have large hairy feet, don't smoke...) -- and I thought there were only two books in the series, it's the first I've seen of "first of three books". Oh, and again with the "nothing happens", they should know by now that nothing ever happens in a Lee and Miller book, we have that on good authority from critics (http://rolanni.livejournal.com/450449.html)...

Yes indeed, 'kest' isn't explained (I do have a distressingly hard time not spelling it as 'khest', as in Klingon!). Nor is FTL travel in any more detail than 'kest' in the Liaden (or most other SF) books, or 'magic' in general in fantasy. Enough detail is given to see ("show, don't tell") what it does. It's generally better that way because too much detail can cause a reader to trip up, whereas if they fill the details in themselves they are more likely to believe it. But perhaps the reviewer doesn't have enough imagination for that (personally I prefer radio to TV becayse "the pictures are better on radio" and books to radio because the sound is better in books as well).

(Listening to the "related videos" (yes, they do seem to be the same) while reading the book might be interesting though...)

How hard is the mat to clean? We have 11 cats, which is why we were using bargain placemats, it only took a minute to put them in the sink and scrub them down with hot soapy water.

I fear that a regular mat that was rough enough to stop the sliding would be impossible to keep clean with the kind of traffic our food and water bowls get. That's why we were looking for the safety tape. We figured if the safety tape got soiled or shredded we could just take it up and put more back down.

How hard is the mat to clean?

We shake it out; it takes a fair amount of whacking to get the grit out of the depths. I wouldn't want to have it around if there was a chance that wet food was going to get dropped into it.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. We feed dry but we have a couple of messy eaters and add to a that couple of messy drinkers and I think it would become disgusting in short order and be hard to keep clean.
