...and then the City of Baltimore saw the angle for cash, and demanded that it acquire a "minor privilege permit" at a cost of $800. One assumes this would be an annual fee, though it doesn't say so in the article.

No joy in Mudville. Boo. Boo.

Hiss.

Read about the flamingo

What a bird brained thing to do!

Still it could have been worse.

They might have billed her for 7 years of back fees.

I actually find it more discouraging that she: "said she decided to remove the bird after placing 10 phone calls to different city departments but finding no success in alleviating the fee."

I was also a little startled by some of the comments on the story.

And I know you haven't been living there for a long time, but have you seen the flamingo on recent visits to the area?

I'm sure that thought would've occurred to them next year. Gotta set the hook, first.

I have not myself seen this particular flamingo. I do have a Connection with Pink Baltimore Flamingos (a story for perhaps tomorrow), but, as Jim notes, we are all the poorer for there being one less harmlessly ridiculous thing in the world.

It's the government: being arbitrary and capricious is what they do best.

I happen to be in Annapolis this week on business, so I'm hearing the local news feeds. Apparently the Mayor of Baltimore is now saying something about wanting the bird back up! I didn't catch any details, but stay tuned - there's more to come!
