Nice! I love that he included Daav's earring and Aelliana's jump pilot's ring. Did he wing the outfits, or did you two suggest those? (Aside from the essential presence of jump pilots' leather jackets, of course.)
Hee. I was a little surprised by the bright color and pattern of Aelli's shirt--she always struck me as more of a muted-color woman. But the detail is wonderful. And the cityscape...! Just beautiful.
ETA: Bleee and there's a cat on the viewscreen--! Love. It.
ETA2: Hey, I've always wondered: does the cover artist receive a copy of the book to read in order to make the illustration? He mentions an "engaging and colorful book," which suggests to me that he's read the whole thing.
Wow, that's pretty awesome. I especially like the fact that I made some silly assumptions when I looked at it in a small browser window (Oh, look, another space scene. That's nice...), but then when I scrolled down my impressions of it changed completely.
This cover also has the feature of successfully making me speculate about the book in a way that I usually don't. Congratulations, David Mattingly!
The accessories worn by Aelliana and Daav are both interesting, as is the Times Square -esque nature of the setting. At first the towers made me stop and wonder about the towers of Landomist, but then my brain turned on and said, "nope, wrong book!" But they do remind me very much of the Petronas Towers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petronas_Towers) in Kuala Lampur (featured in the 1999 Sean Connery/Catherine Zeta-Jones vehicle Entrapment).
What I rather like is the "Liaden?" script on the signs. The pictures is somewhat reminiscent of Tokyo or Hong Kong but the alien script makes it very clear that we aren't on Earth.
A few letters can be read as Japanese (e.g. ロ and the text on the green banner begins with what looks like マ), but it seems this was invented just for the cover.
I like it, but the fly car thing – never really associated that with Liaden universe. Rockets and ground cars, but then I guess Theo did drive/fly people for dinner.
You can get a print of anything I have ever done, but since I have done over 1500 covers, there is no way to feature them all on my site. The print for "Mouse and Dragon" will be the same as the other prints I offer: 13 inches by 19 inches, on fine art matte paper, signed and number in an edition of 50. The price is $50, with $10 for the tube and shipping. If you are interested you can use paypal, or send me a check. I'll be happy to make you one. Thanks for your interest! David Mattingly
Edition of 50. Hmm - I wonder if I shouldn't have mention it here? Ah, well - here's hoping I can come up with the $60 before he runs out!
I like it. Daav looks like I think Daav should look. Does anyone else think that Aelliana looks a leetle bit like Samantha Carter from Stargate? As cover art is the non-negotiable hint of the world the storyteller is creating, it's nice that so much effort has gone into the detail.
I was browsing thru his prints – man he has done a lot of covers. I recognized a large percentage. He even has some covers for the lensmen series. Must be reprints, I doubt he is old enough to have done the originals.
Wow! Now that is definitely cover art which would attract me to read the book (if I weren't already waiting for it). And I think I just fell even more in love with Aelliana...

The outfits were created by Mr. Mattingly -- and an excellent job he did. I want Aelliana's jacket...
