Big wind, tiny void
Saturday, March 22nd, 2025 09:34 amBig wind tiny void
curls in safety, softly warm
Big wind dies, void sighs
--Haiku off the cuff, Sharon Lee
What went before ONE: And the bread's out. Not a bad looking loaf, though I got a little carried away with the dusting.
Recipe here
TWO: Big wind blowing. The Teeniest Void Kitten climbed into my lap when it started, and curled up into a knot the size of Rhode Island.
This of course makes it very easy to type.
Ren Zel and Anthora are an ... interesting couple.
THREE: What went before: So, I thought I was waiting for a box of bookmarks today, but it turns out that what I was really waiting for was a box full of Ribbon Dance mmps! Coming out on April 29!
In re BaltiCon: People are asking if there will be a Friends of Liad breakfast and/or a Teddy Bear Tea.
The Friends of Liad breakfast, which is not a con event, but a gathering of the clan to share a meal, and to catch up with each other, is definitely possible; the hotel restaurant is able to accommodate a group. I can't tell you when, because I need to find what my schedule will be.
Teddy Bear Tea: is traditionally a con event, and therefore vulnerable, as all events, to the necessities of the program.
Bottom Line: I don't have any information to share until I get together with BaltiCon Programming, and their schedule is finalized.
Summing Up: Watch the skies.
Saturday. Sunny and gonna get warm. Monday, say the weatherbeans, it will snow.
Breakfast was naan, hummus, and a mini-orange. Second cup of tea to hand. Lunch is on the knees of Zao Shen.
This morning, I need to change the strip that keeps the heart monitor stuck to my chest. No, I am not happy about this.
After that -- we'll see. Maybe I'll go for a ride, being as it's gonna be so warm and all. I haven't been to Belfast since forever. Maybe get lunch at the coop. That could work.
In other news, and in the spirit of saving the best for last -- it comes about that the anniversary edition of I DARE will be published by Baen in December. Here's the new cover; art by Sam Kennedy.
The day of good surprises
Tuesday, July 9th, 2024 04:19 pmSo, I saw my PCP this morning. I have been cleared to drive locally until I see a vascular specialist about a blockage. This means that I could -- and did! -- go to the grocery store this afternoon, and will be able to take Rook to his meet 'n greet with his vet tomorrow afternoon.
That was pleasant surprise Number One.
Pleasant surprise Number Two was the arrival in the mail of the original cover art for Liaden Universe® novel number 27, Diviner's Bow, to be published in April 2025. David Mattingly did his usual marvelous work. I really appreciate the care he took with the characters -- that's Counsel to Chaos Blays essWorthi on the left and the Deaf Counselor, Majel ziaGorn, on the right.
Watch the skies
Saturday, June 26th, 2021 07:48 amFrantic deadline writing continues, and! We have a title for the novel, which IS a Jethri novel, and that title is!
FAIR TRADE
In the midst of All That (yes, yes, but you -- at least I -- have to give my brain something to do while the backroom is slapping together the rough of the next scene besides play endless rounds of Lumeno), the thirty-third Adventures in the Liaden Universe® chapbook, BAD ACTORS, is in process. The Tyop Hunters are returning their results, and I'm looking at putting the chapbook up for pre-order next week, with an eye toward a July 31 release date.
BAD ACTORS collects three previously published Liaden short stories that fell through the cracks in our reprint process, due in equal parts to differing availability dates (one story had an 18-month exclusivity period, the others had a year), and the publication of the various Liaden Universe® Constellations. All three stories feature people who might have chosen better, and all three were commissioned. No, I don't know why three different editors wanted stories that practically begged for Protags With Questionable Morals(tm).
The stories included are! Excerpts from Two Lives, Dark Secrets, and Revolutionists. As it happens, two of them were principally written by Steve, one by me. So, you can have fun trying to decide which is which. Possibly this could be made into a drinking game. Or, yanno, not.
Watch this space, and other spaces where Things Liaden are discussed, for news. Be sure that when pre-orders open, we will shout it from the highest buildings available.
While you're waiting, here's another look at the cover art.
One thing I think you should know...
Monday, June 14th, 2021 10:58 amMonday again.
Steve made us some splendid scrambled eggs with potato for breakfast.
We decided on a cover image for the next Liaden Universe® chapbook (#33!) and I did the layout, because apparently doing layout is more beguiling than cleaning off my desk so I can get back with the novel and write 8,000 words this morning.
I've also decided on the contents for chapbook #34, but that has to wait until I finish writing "Our Lady of Benevolence," which really will be after pay copy is turned in.
Supposed to rain today, which will be nice if it actually materializes. In any case, it's much cooler, and more in line with a Maine June, and if we don't see 90F/32C for the rest of the summer, that will be fine by me.
Yesterday, yes, Sunday, I took delivery of three Hays LED "neon" tubes for my office, and last night I set up the two yellow tubes. They are BRIGHT! Which is a feature. Gonna change the Whole Look of my office during the winter months. I still haven't figures out a place for the third tube -- allegedly "warm white" -- but I'll figure it out, eventually.
In other news, I finished reading the proofs of the Trader's Leap mass market edition, coming to a bookstore near you at the end of September, and I daily expect the proofs for the new mmp edition of Local Custom, which will be in bookstores at the end of November.
May I just say that Trader's Leap really is a very good book? I'm extremely fond of it on a number of levels.
Next up is getting back with the Jethri novel in progress. Right after I clean off my desk.
And that's the news that's fit to print. Oh, hey, here's the cover for the next chapbook -- just a tease; we'll let you know when you can order it.
Today's blog title brought to you by Fleetwood Mac. Yes, again. Here's your link.
Family Portrait
Friday, January 10th, 2020 11:17 amThose who have been with us for a while will recall that, back in 2012, Steve and I pitched five books to Madame at Baen, the so-called Five Book Dash.
Well, in the Way of Things Lee and Miller, the Five Book Dash became a Six Book Dash, and just yesterday, we got the cover art for the sixth book -- Trader's Leap -- in the mail.
All art by David Mattingly
Here's a family portrait:
Spring is sprung; the grass is riz*
Tuesday, May 7th, 2019 09:52 amSo, Steve and I have been out and about and in and around, we took a drive up into the Western Mountains on Saturday, I've been working steadily on the next novel (still lacking a title), Steve has finished up "Shout of Honor," and now I'm moving on to making that into Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 29, with a planned release date of May 15, while he reads the new beginning of said titleless book.
All of this is enough to keep us busy, but it makes dull blogging.
I can give you a little excitement today, so hold onto your hats.
Here's the cover for the upcoming chapbook.
*Full verse:
Spring is sprung; the grass is riz
I wonder where the birdie is.
They say the bird is on the wing,
But that's absurd. The wing is on the bird.
--Spike Jones**

**There's some dispute about the author. Some folks say Ogden Nash, but I had always heard it was Spike Jones, and that's what I'm going with.
Watch the Skies
Friday, April 5th, 2019 08:15 amFORTUNE'S FAVORS:
ADVENTURES IN THE LIADEN UNIVERSE® NUMBER 28Is in the proofing and recompiling stage. We hope to see it for sale, as an ebook and (from Amazon only) a paper book on-or-near April 15. We will tell you when it can be ordered, or you can, as above, watch the skies.
Herewith, the cover and the teaser.
Are you feeling lucky?
Mar Tyn eys'Ornstahl is a lucky man. His very presence can determine the fall of a card, the spin of a wheel, or whether the bread will rise or fall.
In fact, Mar Tyn eys'Ornstahl isn't merely lucky. Mar Tyn is a Luck; a focal point for the elemental force of random event. While most people think that there is good luck and bad, Mar Tyn knows better. Luck is Luck; only the aftermath of Luck's presence can be found to be good or bad.
Mar Tyn's Luck, for instance, has recently cost him his home, and his savings. He has only one thing left to gamble.
And his life might not be enough.
NEVER BEFORE IN PRINT!

Today in the Liaden Universe®
Saturday, March 18th, 2017 10:51 amIt is a truism of the freelance lifestyle that one lives always in pleasant anticipation of the arrival of money, and this morning was no different than any other in that regard.
I make a clean breast at once. Today, we did not get money in the mail.
Today, we got something better.
I have here in my hand a letter from David Mattingly, enclosing the first of 50 prints of the wrap-around cover for Neogenesis, the twenty-first novel in the Liaden Universe®. David also kindly compliments the book, letting us know that he felt a "special connection."
We also find that Amazon today has put up a catalog page for Neogenesis, which includes the publisher's synopsis. Here's that link.
And here is the cover art:
There are forty-nine more prints available. Apply to David Mattingly, if you would like to purchase one. Here's a link.
Even more eye candy!
Wednesday, July 13th, 2016 09:58 amA couple days ago, we were pleased to show you David Mattingly's painting that would become the cover for The Gathering Edge.
Today, we are pleased to share the comp cover, still smokin' hot from the Baen Art Department.
Also! If viewing the art above has made you a little peckish, Cedar Sanderson has featured Daav yos'Phelium's Extra Special Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in today's Eat This While You Read That column. Here's your link.
Also, also! Alliance of Equals has 40 reader reviews on Amazon! Only 160 to go! You guys are doing great.
And! (given "also" a rest, you see) Steve and I will be signing Alliance of Equals at Children's Book Cellar, 52 Main Street, Waterville, Maine (our local indie bookstore) on Saturday, July 16 (that's this Saturday!) at 2 p.m. If you're in the area, come on by and say, "hi!"
The weatherbeans are calling for A Warm One, as Maine counts these things. I, of course, will be at the nice, air conditioned, hospital doing the volunteer gig. Steve and the cats will likely need to put the portable A/C unit in to play. Ah, summer. . .And, as Mainers say earnestly to each other, under just these sorts of conditions: "At least it ain't snowin'."
Hope you have a good day, wherever you are.
Sneak Peek Eye Candy: Alliance of Equals
Wednesday, November 4th, 2015 12:24 pmHere we have something rare and precious -- a sneak peek of the comp of the cover for Alliance of Equals. Which is to say a suggested layout. Sort of like the cover version of a first draft.
We are cautioned that the final cover may change, but this is where the Art Department at Baen is currently tending.
Art by David Mattingly, and yes, this does illustrate an Actual Scene from the book.

Eye Candy: This Just In
