Y'all know what today is, right?

Right!

Today is the day that those brave and determined souls who hold out for the mass market paperback finally get to hold Neogenesis in their hands!

Good reading, O! Brave and Determined.

. . .Hey, I've got an idea!  Why don't we all read Neogenesis today, in solidarity?

rolanni: (Default)

Couple of events of note, for those who like to listen to content:

On Friday, Part One of a far-ranging interview with Steve Miller was featured on the Baen Free Radio Hour.  Here's your link.

Over the weekend, Steve posted a new podcast on Patreon, for patrons only, in which he reads "Cutting Corners."  Here's your link.

Also!  "Block Party," a Liaden Universe® story by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, is still available to be read -- for free! -- at Baen.com.  Here's that link.

"Degrees of Separation," the prequel to "Block Party," will be published as Degrees  of Separation:  Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 27.  You may preoder the ebook now from Amazon , BN, iBooks, Kobo, and Tolino.

On January 15, you may also purchase the ebook edition from Baen.

Sometime RSN, you will either be able to pre-order or outright purchase the paper edition, from Amazon only.

Neogenesis, the 21st novel of the Liaden Universe® was published on January 2, and is available in hardcover, ebook, and audio editions.

If you read the novel and want to talk about it, there is a spoiler thread here.

Also! If you've read Neogenesis, please consider leaving a review at Amazon, Goodreads, or another site where readers read.  Thanks!

For those local(ish) to Waterville, Maine, Steve Miller and Sharon Lee will be signing books and talking trash at the Children's Book Cellar, 52 Main Street, in Waterville, on Saturday, January 13, from 1-3:30 pm.  If you missed your shot at getting a personalized copy from Uncle Hugo, this is your Second Chance.  Call the store ((207) 872-4543) before our signing, or during it, and we will personalize a book for you.

Peripheral to this, Uncle Hugo does still have some signed copies of Neogenesis in stock.  Here's the link.

In convention news:  Sadly, we will not be attending Boskone this year.  We will, however, be Author Guests of Honor at MidSouthCon, in March.

In writing news:  Yep, still working on Fifth of Five, which refuses all titles suggested to it, and shrugs off any attempt to title-shame it.  I told you it was being a tough book.

I think that catches us all up on the business side of things.

Everybody stay healthy.

Back to work

rolanni: (Default)

So, three days of work essentially lost, which means I've gotta Write Like a Sonofagun.  Which I've been doing.  I'm just back from lunch, and thought I'd catch y'all back up before I got to work again.

Degrees of Separation: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 27 ebook edition is available for preorder at the following online vendors:  Amazon, B&N, iBooks, Kobo, Tolino.

Degrees will publish on January 15.  On that date (on the US timeline), you will be able to buy an ebook edition from all of the vendors listed above, and from Baen eBooks.  The paper edition ought to be available on January 15, as well, but if not then, very soon after.

Degrees is the prequel to "Block Party," which you may read, for free, on Baen.com.  Here's your link.

Neogenesis, the 21st novel set in the Liaden Universe® created by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, was officially released as hardcover, ebook, and audiobook on January 2.  If you read the book, please consider putting a reader review up on Amazon, BN, or another review venue.

No, I do not have a publication date for Fifth of Five, but a good guess would be: between six and 14 months after Steve and I turn it in to Madame the Publisher, which!  We haven't done yet.

A couple months ago, I had to stop drinking coffee.  This is of course a tragedy, but with the help of kind friends, I have been able to locate several teas which will deliver the miracle of caffeine into my system.  My morning drug of choice is Irish Breakfast Tea.  In the afternoon, I sometimes have a cup of vanilla chai, which is pleasant, but I also like green tea in the afternoon.

Early in the week, Steve brought me news of Zhena's Teas -- a must-see, as I'm sure you'll agree.  I went online to look at them, and found the! perfect! green tea for my needs, which arrived today -- and here's a picture:

For those who follow the Cat Farm's Snow Removal Protocols:  We had a "snow hurricane" on Thursday, which deposited about 17 inches of snow that I could not shovel (see back spasms), and which Steve could not shovel (see cardiomyopathy), and which the plowguy could not shovel (see three dozen customers needing to be plowed out and the limited number of hours in the day).

The plowguy, however, had a solution.  "I know a guy," he said.  "I'll get him down here."

And so it is that, in addition to a lawnguy, and a plowguy, we now have a shovelguy.  Which is actually something of a relief.

It's also good to know that the I-Know-A-Guy Network is still operational, at least in our part of Central Maine.

And that?  Catches us up for the day.  Back to work I go.

*Yes, I know I have not provided links for Apple and Tolino; that's because I have heard news of availability from third parties, but have not been able to locate the books on those two services myself.  If someone will supply me with links, I'll be happy to amend the post.

Thanks to Susan for providing the iBooks link!

Thanks, also, to Estara Swanberg for the Tolino link!

And to Marion, for the explanatory Tolino links.  Who knew?

rolanni: (Default)

So, after an email exchange a couple nights ago, the Nook Team magically invested me with the ability to publish books for pre-order, with the result that you -- yes, you! -- can now preorder the electronic edition of Degrees of Separation: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 27 from BN/Nook Books ,  from Amazon/Kindle, from Kobo, and (this is according to rumor, only) at Apple.

I made an attempt to get Amazon to help me put the paper book on pre-order, but! It turns out that it never occurred to them that someone might want to do Such An Outrageous Thing, so!  The idea is being remanded to the Team, and no paper pre-orders for this title.  I'll do my best to make sure that it is available for sale on January 15.  Baen ebooks will have the book for sale in electronic edition on January 15, as well.

Speaking of links and Amazon. . .Several people have written, and posted here and there on-line that there Is! No! Kindle! Edition of Neogenesis available -- they are variously made sad, bewildered, and angry by this, which is kind of a shame, because!

There is a Kindle edition of  NeogenesisHere's your link. You will note that, while this page lists both the ebook and the Audible editions of the book there is no hardcover listed -- but fear not!  This does not mean that there was no hardcover published, it only means that the hardcover sits in lonely splendor on its own catalog page. I hope this makes everybody happy -- and, no, I don't know why Amazon has not been able to merge both catalog pages.  'WAY above my pay scale.

Here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory, we are experiencing Weather,  In particular, a blizzard (or, if you prefer a bombogenesis, aka a "snow hurricane"), which is expected to dump 11 to 14 inches of snow before it decamps, early tomorrow morning.

Related to this, yesterday, I acquired back spasms as one does, especially if one had the experience of going head-first through the windshield of an automobile at the tender age of 23.  Yesterday was fairly well a waste; while I waited for it to be time to see the doctor at 4:45 pm.  Received blessed muscle relaxants and have been Taking Them As Directed since last evening.  Back still hurts, but has eased back to a 5 on the 1-10 pain scale.  For comparison, yesterday was a 12.

The plowguy -- all hail the plowguy! -- will be clearing our steps and porch and the so-called "front" steps, too, in addition to plowing the driveway, so that, at least, is taken care of.

I think this more or less catches us up, and it occurs to me that it might be prudent to go seek my heating pad again, though standing at my desk is a remarkably pain-free posture.

Everybody, stay happy.

Today is the day that Neogenesis, the twenty-first novel in the Liaden Universe® created and curated by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller is published in hardcover, ebook, and audiobook editions.  The novel is available at all major bookstores, brick and mortar, as well as on-line booksellers.

Go thou forth, buy, and, if it pleaseth you, read.

rolanni: (Default)

So, there are the tasks that one does at Year-End -- filing away the old year, opening the accounting for the new year.  To the best of my ability, these things have been done for the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory.  Which gives a nice feeling of accomplishment, without, yanno, actually having accomplished anything.

Peering forward into the first week of the new month and new year, I see that Tuesday is!

Book Day!

I, for one, am looking forward to receiving my copy of Emergence by CJ Cherryh, as I know many who read here are.

I am also looking forward to the release of the hardcover, ebook, and audio editions of Neogenesis by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.  It's a well-known fact that time runs oddly around writers, and so it simultaneously feels like it's been a long time since we handed in Neogenesis and hardly any time at all.

Sometime next week -- possibly Monday -- I'll be putting Degrees of Separation: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 27 up for pre-order at various online outlets.  Official publication date is January 15.  I anticipate no problems with hung releases, as Degrees is an all-original, never-before-published, never-posted-ANYwhere-else-even-for-a-day, story.  It will also be available as a paper book from Amazon on January 15.

Let's see...Steve and I will be doing a podcast interview for the Baen Free Radio Hour on Wednesday; those are always fun...

On Thursday, Sprite has an appointment with her vet, for the ever-popular annual check-up.  Unfortunately, it's also supposed to snow 3-5/4-6 inches on Thursday, so we may have to swap that out.  Honestly, if it's really bad, I may have to swap out my doctor's appointment on Friday.  Winter in Maine, ayuh.

Looking backward for a moment, we have finished and turned in "Revolutionist" to the Razor's Edge anthology to be published in August by Zombies Need Brains.  And I had an epiphany recording Fifth of Five, which, in the way of epiphanies everywhere, meant the manuscript got busted back under 60,000 words again.

Today, I will write, and do laundry, skritch cats, spend time with Steve.  Possibly, we will see the New Year in -- we're often up that late, just as a usual thing -- but if we don't, it will arrive just fine without us.

Everybody stay safe; see you in the new year.

So, I did jinx my free time, a little.  Wednesday did not take the shape I had envisioned, and I devoted the remaining time to writing (attempting to write, more like) sell copy for "Degrees of Separation"

Thursday morning, having carried my second cup of tea to my office so I could start reading Fifth of Five, and stopping at my desk to check the mail queue -- I changed my day-plans on the spot, because UPS was pleased to tell me that the 200 copies of Neogenesis ordered by Uncle Hugo, long delayed at the warehouse for reasons the warehouse chooses not to share, were abruptly arriving THIS AFTERNOON.

Which they did.

Our challenge at that point became getting the personalized/signed books to the Uncle by the middle of next week, so there would be sufficient time to pack them and put them in the mail before the January 2 pub-date.  Normally we would have taken the weekend to do the signing-and-personalizing, but! Monday is Christmas Day, and there is neither mail delivery nor FedEx pickups on Christmas Day.

That meant that all the books needed to be signed last night, and shipped out today, arriving in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

Which we did; and the books got onto Fast Eddie's FedEx truck barely a half-hour ago, bundled up in racoon coats; some of them waving Minneapolis! pennants.

This morning, I went to town to run the Last Errands BC (Before Christmas), and this afternoon, after lunch, I am, byerlady, reading this damn' manuscript and getting on with doing Work.

In other news, with the outdoor thermometer reporting a brisk 14F-Feels Like-12F (aka -10C-feels-like-minus 11C) it is snowing in Beautiful Central Maine.  It's a rather determined looking little snow, and the weatherbeans are calling 1-3 inches this afternoon, with an additional 1-3 inches to fall overnight.

So, among the weird habits I'm trying to adopt so as to make the next fall into the Slough of Despond less. . .all-consuming, is keeping a Grateful Book, as one friend styles it, or a White Stones Book, as I think of it.  The idea is that every evening, you write down one thing that you were grateful for during the day.

Last evening's entry was the arrival of those 200 books and the necessity to sign them, and turn them around fast.  Why? you ask, when it disrupted your whole schedule?

Well, because very few writers get to the point of having a shipment of books to sign for their fans, arriving to disrupt best-laid plans.  It's rare, and it's a blessing.

And, thank you.

Before we get started today, Management has asked me to make four announcements. Here they are:

One!  If you have been planning on ordering a personalized copy of Liaden Universe® novel Neogenesis, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, you have until tomorrow, Sunday, December 10 to make your order.  Here's your link.

Two! "Block Party," by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller will go live on Baen.com on Friday, December 15.  Mark your calendars.

Three!  You may now pre-order the ebook edition of Neogenesis from the Nook Store and the Kindle Store

Four!  You may now acquire from Baen ebooks the eARC of Star Destroyers, edited by Tony Daniel and Christopher Ruocchio, including all! new! stories by: David Drake, Michael Z. Williamson, Mark L. Van Name, Steve White, Jody Lynn Nye, Brendan DuBois, Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, Susan R. Matthews, Mike Kupari, J.R. Dunn, Robert Buettner, Christopher Ruocchio, Dave Bara, Joelle Presby, Gray Rinehart.  Here's your link.

Adventures in Chemistry
We ran out of bread here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory, so this morning's first priority was baking.  Sadly, it seems this batch ain't gonna rise.  Not enough moisture, I think; I added more than called for in order to get the ingredients to the "sticky ball" stage of the thing, but it might not have been enough.

We shall see.

Snow Party
In other news, the roofers have finished doing their thing.  The house now has an awesome metal roof, and, in celebration, Central Maine is throwing a snowstorm this afternoon through tomorrow morning.

Do we know how to party or what?

Work Going Forward
Steve and I have three projects underway at the moment.

One is, of course, Fifth of Five aka Monkey Business.

The second is a short story destined for Insurgency, an anthology coming from ZNB in 2018.

The third project is editing Degrees of Separation: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 27, an all-new, all-original novella (unless it hits the lower eaves of novel by the time the edits are done).  Degrees, it says here, is a story about Paris, about love, and about bread.  Our intention is to have it available as a widely-distributed echapbook,  and as a paper chapbook (though Amazon only) in mid to late January.

Now that the roofers are gone. . .
I can hang up my framed Letter of Nobility, certifying that Baroness Sharon Lee is a noble citizen of the sovereign micro-nation of Ladonia.  I had achieved my noble citizenship a few months back, to honor the memory of the late Dave Romm, himself a Baron of Ladonia, but had been behind in acquiring a proper frame.  Steve did this for me (you see how things work around here) and now the Letter may be put on display.

I think that catches us all up.

Speaking of catching up, here's Scrabble, catching up on her comfy.

A.  You may now order a signed and/or personalized copy of the hardback edition of Neogenesis from Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore in Minneapolis.  Deadline for ordering personalizations (in which "personalization" means, You ask the author to write something on the half-title page in addition to signing their names*) is DECEMBER 10, which is not as far away as you might think.  Orders for signed copies (where "signed" means the authors wrote their names on the half-title) will be accepted until the Uncle runs out of signed books.

HERE'S YOUR LINK TO THE PRE-ORDER INFORMATION AT UNCLE HUGO'S

B.  Neogenesis will be published in hardcover, ebook, and audio editions on January 2, 2018.  Eileen Stevens will narrate the audiobook.

C.  "Block Party," a novelette to help get you all warmed up for the release of Neogenesis, will be published, free! to! read! to Baen.com on December 15. Mark your calendars.

D.  The eArc of Neogenesis is still for sale at Baen.com.  Here's your link.  You may also read the first seven chapters at this link.

E.  No, sadly, we will not be attending Boskone next year.  We will be at MidSouthCon, March 9-11, and hope to see many of you there.

F.  Yes, Steve and I will be attending WorldCon in San Jose, August 16-20.

G.  Yes, Baen will be publishing a mass market anniversary edition of Agent of Change -- in November 2018.  I think I may have forgotten to include the date in the most recent InfoDump.

H.  Over the weekend, Steve and I discovered that Pinbeam Books (that's us) had fallen behind, leaving four short stories un-chapbooked.  We are in the process of rectifying this, so -- watch the skies.

Here's the cover for Heirs to Trouble:

___________
*Lee and Miller, aka "the authors" reserve the right to refuse to inscribe a book with a personalization they deem, in their sole opinion, to be inappropriate.  The authors' decision is final, there is no appeal.

The Uncle, by which I of course mean Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore is now taking preorders for signed/personalized copies of Neogenesis by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller. Here's the link.

Do, please, O! Do read the ordering instructions at the top of the catalog page the above link will open.

Thanks -- and have fun!

Neogenesis in the news!

Audiobook consumers take note!  We hear from Audible that the audiobook edition of Neogenesis is now in production, the goal being to see it released simultaneously with the hardcover and ebook, on January 2, 2018.  Eileen Stevens will narrate.

Completists!  You may still purchase an eArc of Neogenesis only from Baen!  This opportunity will disappear once the final book is released.  Here's the link.

Autographed copies of Neogenesis will be offered by Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore in Minneapolis, just as soon as the catalog page goes up. Watch this space for details!

If you have already read Neogenesis, please consider leaving a review on Goodreads, LibraryThing, or other review sites.  Advance buzz is Good.

If you have already read Neogenesis and Want To Talk About It, there is a spoiler discussion at this link.

Everybody stay peaceful.

Baen Books is holding a contest to give away paper ARCS* of Neogenesis by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.  To enter, you need to go to the Baen Books facebook page -- here's your link -- and answer the question:  What is your favorite Liaden Universe® novel -- and why?

It rained and snowed last night -- just a bit.  Today,  we're in the midst of another windstorm, and may expect downed trees, and power outages.  This sounds somewhat familiar, except today we'll be doing it under a blue sky, and a high temperature of 35F/2C.  Tonight's low will be 13F/-11C with a wind chill of -4F/-20C.

My plan for the day is to stay in and write.  OK, maybe I'll clean the bathroom, too.

Everybody stay warm or cool, whichever is best in Your Particular Situation.

We, by which I of course mean Steve, have seen the laundry done.  Next up is a blankie run, which is surely needed, but which may not happen today.

We, by which I mean I, have gone as far as I can with the story commissioned for Baen.com, which is today entitled "Block Party."  This means that it now goes to Steve for his review and modifications.

Today's to-do list includes catching up with some more of my backlogged email, and opening up the working file for Fifth of Five, which continues to refuse a title, and re-acquaint myself.

Of possible interest to those reading here is the fact that the turn-in deadline for Fifth of Five has been shifted to March 31.  Wrap-up books are hard.

Let's see. . .in case you missed it, the eArc for Neogenesis is now available in every electronic format known to Man or Clutch, from Baen:  here's your link.  You may also use the link to read the first seven chapters of the book, for free.

To the best of my knowledge -- and Trooper's, too! -- we will be stay-at-home writers for the rest of the year.  This is a good thing, because, frankly, we're exhausted, and also we have Deadlines, which, inexplicably, did not get any further away while we were rusticating in Real Life.

Weatherwise, we seem to be under hurricane weather, again; at the moment the air is sodden and still.  The Weatherbeans are calling with one voice for rain, all day.

. . .and that's all the news that's fit, today.

Today's blog post title comes from Tom Petty, "A Mind with a Heart of it's Own."  Here's your link.

For them what indulges, the eARC of Neogenesis, by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller -- the 21st Liaden Universe®! -- is now available for download (and reading, natch).

Hearphones update

Thursday, September 21st, 2017 12:16 pm
rolanni: (Default)

So, we took the car in for the 10,000 mile check-up and tire rotation thingy, then went to IHOP for breakfast and a test drive of the hearphones.

The hearphones...are problematical on two fronts.

Front One:  I can't keep the damned things charged.  Admittedly, this files under Operator Error, but I'm not usually an idiot about keeping the toys charged, so there's some subtlety I'm missing.  And it doesn't lessen Operator Aggravation to arrive at the Test Location and find that the 'phones are, ahem, critically low on power.

Front Two:  Hearing my own voice in my ears is gonna drive me bugs.  And this may actually be a deal-breaker.  Steve urges me to give it another run, to see if I get used to it, which is fair, but at the moment what I'm doing is whispering in an attempt not to hear my own voice, which is...not really much better than sitting like a stump at a group dinner because I can't hear what anyone else is saying.

The plaque (and check) which together comprise "Wise Child's" Readers Choice award arrived yesterday.  The check we deposited in the bank today while we were out and about.  Here is a photograph of the plaque, being modeled by the delightful Mr. Miller.

So, my next order of business is to read another 50ish pages of the Neogenesis page proofs.  Lunch is on the schedule, and, very possibly, a nap, because we not only got up at stoopid o'clock to take the car in, but we got flu shots (the high-test flu shots reserved for those of us who are temporally elongated), too.

Everybody be good.

rolanni: (Default)

For those following along at home:  The hearphone movie test was inconclusive.  I could, indeed, hear the dialog in Fantastic Beasts clearly while wearing the hearphones, but!  So could I without.  I am forced to conclude that the speakers on the new television set are superior to those in the local movie theater.

I have not yet done the Noisy Bar test drive.  I have a window of opportunity tomorrow, when I need to be in Augusta insanely early so the car can get its 10,000 mile inspection, fine-tuning, whatever.  Steve has bravely volunteered to go with me, and the plan (The Plan) is that, after the car is taken care of, we shall adjourn to IHOP, which is really pretty noisy, and I will do a test there.

One of the things that's really freaky about the hearphones, besides hearing yourself talk through your ears, is that there's a option for "silence" -- which turns off your ears.  Or at least feels like it's turned off your ears.  No input gets through.

In other news, the page proofs for Neogenesis, the twenty-first book in the Liaden Universe®; the eleventh Liaden book we've written for Baen -- landed in my in-box yesterday.  Today, after breakfast, Sprite and I sat down with our red pen and our sticky tabs and went over the front matter and the first 48 pages, which takes us through the first section/chapter.

I will now go on to other things, including working on Fifth of Five, the sequel to Neogenesis and the last book in both the five-book arc beginning with Dragon in Exile, and the last book in the arc begun 29 years ago, in Agent of Change.

Twenty-nine years ago.

Well.  I guess I've earned those purple hairs.

Before anyone asks:  Nope, still don't know when the eArc of Neogenesis will appear at a Baen.com near you.  The last word I had, from two "Baen insiders" (editors, actually, but "Baen insiders" sounds infinitely cooler than "editor") was that the eArc would be available in September.  That is the sum of my knowledge on the subject (honest!).  If you need to know more, you need to write to Baen.

What else?  The fountain pen experiment continues to go well.  I have one pen (out of, er, four?  that escalated quickly) that I'm not really crazy about, but I am declaring success.

So, that seems to be all the news.  Everybody be well.

News you Need

Tuesday, August 29th, 2017 06:31 pm
rolanni: (Default)

So, I've been trying to get to a detailed post about the Bingham Carousel Circuit, but in truth, it may not happen.  We're having a sudden and very intense bout of Life here, which I guess means we timed our vacation correctly, because now have the resources necessary to get through this bit.

In and around Life, however, there are things that you -- yes, you! -- need to know, which are (read carefully):

ONE:  Today! August 29 2017 is Alliance of Equals' mass market paperback book day!  Go, Alliance of Equals!

TWO:  The number of Pinbeam Books (that would be Steve and me, cleverly disguised as our own publisher) chapbooks which have been converted to paper now numbers six (and six shall be the number).  To wit:
Liaden Universe® titlesChange Management, Due Diligence, Sleeping with the Enemy
Sharon Lee titles:  Barnburner, Gunshy, Spell Bound

THREE:  Our mole deep inside Baen Books has informed us that the eARC for Neogenesis, scheduled to be published in hardcover January 2, 2018, will be released in September (good ghod, that's, like, Friday!).  We do not have a release date, but you might do very well to Watch the Skies, and while you're doing that, spreading the word to your friends, your co-workers, your best enemies, your mom, and, well -- everybody.

So!  That's what I've got.  I will, I suspect, Be Scarce for the next while.  I'm fine; just coping.

Be excellent to each other.

rolanni: (Coffee with Rolanni)

It is a truism of the freelance lifestyle that one lives always in pleasant anticipation of the arrival of money, and this morning was no different than any other in that regard.

I make a clean breast at once.  Today, we did not get money in the mail.

Today, we got something better.

I have here in my hand a letter from David Mattingly, enclosing the first of 50 prints of the wrap-around cover for Neogenesis, the twenty-first novel in the Liaden Universe®.  David also kindly compliments the book, letting us know that he felt a "special connection."

We also find that Amazon today has put up a catalog page for Neogenesis, which includes the publisher's synopsis.  Here's that link.

And here is the cover art:

There are forty-nine more prints available.  Apply to David Mattingly, if you would like to purchase one.  Here's a link.
