  1.  BREAD ALONE

For those who collect, the paper edition of BREAD ALONE:  Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 34 is for sale from Amazon.  Here's your link.

The ebook edition of BREAD ALONE is available for pre-order from the electronic bookstore of your choice*.  It will be published on November 25, the USian Thanksgiving Day.

*The ebook edition of BREAD ALONE will be available for download from Baen.com "before the parades start" on Thanksgiving Day.

2.  LIADEN "HOLIDAY" STORY ON BAEN.COM

To the best of my ability to calculate, Liaden short story "From Every Storm a Rainbow" will be published to the front page at Baen.com this week.  Possibly today, maybe tomorrow.  Note that you will have to scroll down a bit to get to the story.

3.  WHAT ON EARTH ARE THEY ABOUT?

Steve is working on the sequel to the upcoming Jethri Gobeln novel FAIR TRADE*.

Sharon is working on a novel dealing with the new arrangements at Tinsori Light.

Neither of these projects has titles as yet.

*In which "upcoming" = May 3, 2022.

4.  THE STATE OF SHARON'S DESK

Some of you will recall that I straightened my desk after turning in BREAD ALONE.  This was so I could begin my next project with a tidy desk, which is something that I Do.  In extreme cases, I have to tidy the entire house before I can begin a new project, but this was not an extreme case.

So!  This is what the desk looked like on the evening of November 14:

This is what the desk looks like this morning, November 16:

And here's a close-up of my user manuals. The one on the bottom worries me a bit.

And, that?  Is all I've got.

Everybody stay safe.

So, today, we expect a crew of sturdy lads sometime this afternoon, to deliver the new bed.  We hadn't quite intended to buy a new bed -- no, that's inaccurate.  We had intended to buy a new bed, eventually, but our intent on Thursday was to do some reconnaissance in that direction. Wherefore we visited Northern Mattress, where we investigated floor models, collected catalog pages, and the salesman's card.

When we returned to the car, Steve said, "You want to go across the river and look at Fortin's?"

So, we went across the river, to Fortin's, where we were greeted by Douglas, the salesman who had sold us our new couch a year or so ago.  We explained the problem -- the problem being that our bed was a waterbed platform with a queen mattress in the box.  We'd replaced the mattress a few years ago, but the bed itself had been solid enough, at the time, since it had been sitting in one place for 26 or so years.  Unfortunately, the move was especially hard on the old, press-board frame, which had been deconstructed and re-constructed by non-experts three times in the course of four weeks, and was very much the worse for its ill-treatment.  Douglas said, "You want a platform bed," and took us to the back of the store, where such items are on display.

Among the necessary features of any new bed had to be a headboard wide enough for the cats to use as a highway to the bookcase aerie in the bedroom.  This has been an Approved Cat Route for at least 26 years, which is to say all of Scrabble's lifetime (Scrabble being 16).  Scrabble being the Power User of the aerie, we didn't want to cut her off.

Douglas showed us the Perfect Bed, made right in Newport, Maine, in fact, assured us that he could order it with a bookcase headboard, which would be plenty wide enough for Cat Traffic -- but it would take about 10 weeks to arrive, because -- handmade in Newport.

While Steve and I were discussing this, Douglas went back to the warehouse, as one does, and returned with a look of wide-eyed amaze on his face.

"I have the bed," he said.  "And it has a bookcase headboard."

"When can it be delivered?" asked Steve.

"Saturday afternoon OK with you guys?"

So!  This afternoon we'll be taking delivery of a new bed and cat highway.

Didn't see that coming.

In other news, we have one more Major Contracting Event on the schedule.  We had been going to put off installing heat pumps (yes, that's plural; because the house is U-shaped, each wing needs its own pump) until next year, since we'd already gambled with the tax money in order to make the move into this house happen, and though our luck had been in, I am by nature risk-averse, and I'd done enough gambling for one year.

Then Mr. Trump announced Trade War, and we realized that waiting til next year would see tariffs and ill-will increasing the cost of items imported from Japan, which would likely put the project out of reach.

We therefore went looking for help, and it turns out that there is a useful consumer program in Maine that has somehow to date escaped cancellation by our governor.  It is the Efficiency Maine Loan program, which gives long-term, low-interest loans on things like heat pump installations, and also has a rebate program for installation of energy efficient systems.

Heat pump installations are therefore set for next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

We're also expecting the Window Guy to sweep by at some point to fix the stuck windows in the hallway to Steve's office.  It will be Good if they can be made to close.  It would be Optimum, if they can be made to open and close on demand.

So, that's the next phase of Real Life Adventures.

For those who are here for news of books, and the production of words --  yes, writing has been going forth.  For those expecting a new book in January -- no, sorry; we are scheduled to turn the book in to Madame the Editor in January.  What happens to it then is wholly up to her.

I believe this catches us up again.

I hope everyone has a splendid weekend.

Midnight Vestals is the name of my next band. Because I know someone was wondering.

Also, it was hot today, though not as hot as it could've been, and I made the Command Decision to go with open windows and fans, because I am So Very Tired of the damn' roaring from the air conditioner, I can't tell you. Anyhow, that may have been a mistake. All of my joints hurt, and I am not in my usual agreeable rosy mood.

Despite which, laundry -- though not quite all the laundry -- has been done, and writing, too.

The slacks I'd thought were lost in the mail, they were so long behind All the Other Things in the same order, arrived today. Mailed from Sweden. The rest of the things came from Massachusetts and Georgia. Oh. That'll do it.

Tomorrow! I am to Charlie's Subaru at a ridiculously early hour (though not the most ridiculous early hour) to get the interior light upgrade for Skylark the Forester.

. . .and then I think that my next social engagement is Monday afternoon's massage. Maybe I'll turn off All the Internets and get some work done.

I also realized today that, one month from Saturday, I will (1) celebrate my 66th birthday and (2) attend my first ever carousel convention.  Yep.  Definitely need to get some serious work done this weekend.

What've you got planned for the weekend?

Today's blog title brought to you by Steve Winwood, "Back in the High Life Again."  Here's your link.  Or, if you don't care for Steve Winwood, here's the link to Warren Zevon's cover.

Or, yanno, listen to them back to back.

Third before Fourth

So, let's see.

Steve made pancakes for breakfast; we got out the trash and the recycling; I refreshed the Hummer Bar, and the water in the bird bath; Steve cut down the swinging tire, and added it to the Stuff behind the shed.  I called the lawyer's office; washed pots and pans, unloaded the dishwasher and started filling it back up again. Also, I read my comics and as much of the news as I could stand.

Weatherbeans are calling for a high of 91F/33C today; currently 84F-feels-like-90F (29C-feels-like-32C).  Windows are open, and all available fans are ON.  Trooper has discovered that the ceramic tile in the "entry hall" (actually it's a little smaller than your traditional sidewalk hopscotch pattern) is cool(er), and has established a Spot between the front door and the wall.  I need to be careful not to push the door wide open and smush him I believe the other cats may be down in the basement, which is not a bad idea.

*Glances at to-do list*

I think it might be time to go to work.

Second Breakfast

Thursday, May 24th, 2018 11:29 am
rolanni: (Default)

First breakfast was Cheerios and half a banana, around 8 am.  Second breakfast is six Ritz cracker with cream cheese, and my second cup of tea.

I have News of sorts, for those of you who have been Patiently Bearing with All The Boring House Stuff, and waiting for us to get back to the Important Stuff.

We here at the Confusion Factory have a number of projects currently on our plates, and while they have deadlines as far-flung as August and January, those are delivery deadlines.  Internal deadlines are another thing entirely, because, while Everything May Happen At Once, it has to be handled One Thing At A Time.

So!  We have the following projects in hand:

May 26:  Finish proofing the Anniversary Edition of Agent of Change.  August delivery

May 31: Sharon finishes first draft of as-yet-untitled space opera story for Infinite Stars 2 and passes to Steve.  August delivery

June 1:  Sharon begins Actual Writing of Accepting the Lance.  January 2019 delivery

June 1:  Sharon begins proofing Liaden Universe® Constellation Volume 4.  Steve begins writing mini-intros for each story.  Collaborate on volume intro.  August delivery

July 1:  Sharon begins writing story for Release the Virgins.  Steve begins writing story for Release the Virgins.  August delivery?

You will deduce from this list that we are in a position of needing to Beat Feet and keep on beating.

On top of this -- those who are bored with House Stuff may avert your eyes -- we still do need to get the Old Digs ready for sale, and finish settling into the New Digs.

We will therefore be Somewhat Scarce on the Information Superhighway.  Email may languish.  We will try to surface occasionally to fill y'all in, but work, by which I of course mean, Feeding the Cats, comes first.

Stay safe.  Keep busy.  Be kind.  Take out the trash.  Call your mother.  Tell the people in your life how much they mean to you.  And, always, always. . .

Watch the skies.

rolanni: (Default)

We, by which I of course mean Steve, have seen the laundry done.  Next up is a blankie run, which is surely needed, but which may not happen today.

We, by which I mean I, have gone as far as I can with the story commissioned for Baen.com, which is today entitled "Block Party."  This means that it now goes to Steve for his review and modifications.

Today's to-do list includes catching up with some more of my backlogged email, and opening up the working file for Fifth of Five, which continues to refuse a title, and re-acquaint myself.

Of possible interest to those reading here is the fact that the turn-in deadline for Fifth of Five has been shifted to March 31.  Wrap-up books are hard.

Let's see. . .in case you missed it, the eArc for Neogenesis is now available in every electronic format known to Man or Clutch, from Baen:  here's your link.  You may also use the link to read the first seven chapters of the book, for free.

To the best of my knowledge -- and Trooper's, too! -- we will be stay-at-home writers for the rest of the year.  This is a good thing, because, frankly, we're exhausted, and also we have Deadlines, which, inexplicably, did not get any further away while we were rusticating in Real Life.

Weatherwise, we seem to be under hurricane weather, again; at the moment the air is sodden and still.  The Weatherbeans are calling with one voice for rain, all day.

. . .and that's all the news that's fit, today.

Today's blog post title comes from Tom Petty, "A Mind with a Heart of it's Own."  Here's your link.

rolanni: (Coffee with Rolanni)

So, yesterday's excitement included spilling a glass of ice tea across my desk.  Everything's mopped up now, thanks in great part to Steve's quick reactions, and no electronics died in the adventure.  We were inspired to explore a top shelf in the kitchen and have returned to use not one, but two sippy cups for grownups, so there's that benefit.

The other benefit of spilling liquid over a paper-strewn surface is that you get to look at all those pieces of paper as you're separating them and draping them about your office to dry.  Sometimes, this reveals treasure; sometimes only puzzles.

In the category of puzzle, I discovered a calendar page (we have a Non-Sequitur calendar on the kitchen table, and use the tear-off pages for scrap paper), with my writing in three different directions, elucidating the following:

PP (which I assume is Pemaquid Point; there's a lighthouse there): Rte 32 1:26 hr
Rock(land): Rte 32 1:10
O(ld) O(rchard) B(each): Rte 295 1:43
Coburn G(ore): 16/27 2:11
Portsmouth: 295 2:19
Houlton: 11 2:32
Jackman: 201 1:56

I'm not certain of the original reason for this piece of research (and I'm somewhat unsure of the apparent assumption that I can take Rte 11 all the way to Houlton; I think I have to cope with 95 at some point, but perhaps not.); possibly I was exploring my options, if a Flight to the Border became necessary.  However, it does nicely establish that we are, in fact, located in Central Maine.

And now, having shared this information, I can rid myself of at least one tea-stained scrap of paper.

Today, cardio-gym and the grocery store in the bright sunshine.  Tomorrow, there's snow in the forecast, maybe (we look to be on edge of a snowstorm, which may or may not honor county lines; you never know with snowstorms).  In the meanwhile, there's writing to be done.

Everybody stay well.

rolanni: (The Dragon in Exile)

So, here we are at the start of a new week!  Let's see what's on the roster.

  1. This is Week Five of the Do It Like A Delm Challenge.  We have two challengers already, both taking the theme of knitting.  You may view them here.  Think you can do better?  Enter the list of challengers!  Rules are here.  Don't want to enter, but really want some Cool Liaden Gear?  Here's your link, and remember!  Liaden Universe® shirts make wonderful presents!

  2. Belle has developed a limp off of her right front leg.  We haven't been able to find anything obvious -- she just lies still and purrs when I probe; nothing seems to hurt.  So, anyway, a trip to the vet tomorrow, Just to Be Sure.

  3. The guy who replaced the chimney was just here, and confirmed that, yep, that spot up there on the roof does need caulking.  Which he couldn't do today, because it had rained overnight, so! More contractors in our future.

  4. Speaking of contractors:  We hope to hear back from the various folks who need to be involved in Generator Installation today, and!

  5. Mike the Electrician will be by late in the week to install my new ceiling fan, a circumstance that fills me with a really embarrassing amount of anticipatory delight.

  6. The Rocky Horror Show (the play; the movie is The Rocky Horror Picture Show) will be playing at the Waterville Opera House in late October.  I tried to buy tickets online this morning, forgetting that the Opera House's website never does work properly in re the online purchase of tickets, and I will therefore need to make a phone call.  Boo.  On the other hand, I've never seen Rocky Horror, and really ought to close this gap in my fannish resume.

  7. We have a Skype interview scheduled for next Monday, which means that this week?  I need to get a haircut.

  8. Besides all that, of course, we have work to do, stories and novels to write!  So, yanno -- onward, upward, and sideways, as appropriate.

And that?  Is all I got.

Here, have a picture of Belle and Sprite to start your week off right:

Belle and Sprite. Apparently, Sprite has just been Interesting.Belle and Sprite. Apparently, Sprite has just been Interesting.

rolanni: (The Dragon in Exile)

When I make notes for a short story, I pretty often write them by hand, with a gel pen, on one of those cheap 8.5x11 inch so-called "legal pads" with the rough paper that takes the ink well.

Belle, as per Maine Coon Standard, has tufts of fur between her toes.  She likes to paddle around in the cat water fountain with her big, hairy feet, and then jump onto my desk and wander over my papers before curling up for a nap.

These two factoids are related.  And not in a Good Way.

*peers at smeared ink*

*peers at page beneath note page, also smeared with ink*

Sigh.

I guess it's just as well that the story flipped, anyway.

So!  I haven't talked about my health here in quite awhile, you lucky people, you, but I did want to note that the new, higher dose of levothyroxine -- that being the Whole Gig dose -- is working a treat.  I haven't felt this well in. . .years, really.  The random fall-asleep hasn't happened for weeks, and I can actually get up in the morning when the alarm rings (though I often chose not to do so, because there is such a thing as taking it too far), and function, and my brain seems to be ticking right along (which, right enough, may be a mixed blessing for some, but I'm calling a positive from my side).

After Labor Day, there's a follow-up visit with the vampyres, to quantify this, and I very much hope that the switch back to synthroid (mandated by the insurance company) doesn't mess with success, but I am, at this point, very optimistic.

So, yanno:  Yay!

#

New entries have been posted in the Do It Like A Delm Challenge.  Here's your link.  Remember! This week's entry deadline is tonight, Saturday, at Midnight EDT.  Sunday we will announce the Winner of the Week, and Monday?

Monday we'll start a new challenge round.

#

Today's chores are almost done; I've got the grates and drip-pans soaking, but the rest of the dishes and the vacuuming are finished.  Which means?  The deck is cleared for working on that story this afternoon and evening.

Note to self:  Research waterproof gel ink.

Hope everybody's having a good weekend, wherever you are.

The last half of Alliance of Equals is redlined, and I Figured Something Out, go me.  Tomorrow will be All About the Keying In, and implementing That Which Was Figured Out, so I will not be much about the internets.

But!  There's an article in the Maine Edge about us, and the upcoming book tour.  Here's your link.
