The 27th novel set in the star-spanning Liaden Universe® created by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, third in the Padi yos'Galan internal arc, Diviner's Bow riffs on classic Lee-and-Miller themes of what does it mean to be human, and the proposition that we're all better when we help each other.

A world divided cannot stand. A people divided cannot thrive.

The Oracle has Seen the end of Civilization -- and of the Haosa. While well-meaning people struggle to implement change that might, at least, mitigate a disaster, others are looking toward the profit they can make from the end of the world.

And the lives of two small children may be the threads that bind the future -- or unravels it.

The Padi yos'Galan arc: Trader's Leap, Ribbon Dance, Diviner's Bow.

All three available from your favorite vendor. Diviner's Bow is also available from Audible.

Yes, you read that right, today is Book Day for the anniversary re-issue of Scout's Progress! featuring a stunning new cover by Sam Kennedy.

In celebration, we present to you the Authors' Foreword from the new edition.

Scout's Progress
Authors' Foreword

You are holding the more-or-less twentieth anniversary edition of Scout's Progress, which is something of a shock all by itself.

Scout's Progress was written in 1993, part of an intended two-book set, featuring two brothers-of-the-heart – Er Thom yos'Galan, whose story was told in Local Custom – and Daav yos'Phelium, whose story is told in this book.

We never expected either book to be published.

Nineteen-ninety-three was . . . an odd time in our lives. We were not at that point working writers, by which we mean that we weren't selling. Our first three novels had entertained "disappointing sales" according to their publisher. And yet that same publisher was in no hurry to revert the rights to us, the authors.

We may have been feeling just a trifle bleak in 1993, and questioning a whole lot of our life choices.

We say these things not to garner sympathy, but to set the stage for how we got to Local Custom and Scout's Progress.

In 1993 Real Life, Steve was managing a computer store; Sharon was working as a part-time office manager in the mornings, scrambling as a reporter/photographer for a small weekly newspaper during the afternoon and evenings, and writing a once-a-month science fiction review column for the local daily.

In his spare time, Steve set up and operated Circular Logic, the first computer bulletin board system in Central Maine, which essentially brought Maine into the rest of the then-infant internet. This may not sound like a big deal nowadays, but, trust us, back then, it was an Undertaking, involving multiple CD players, two large servers, interfacing with FIDOnet, to upload and download nightly message caches . . . Yeah, wow. Those were the days.

Sharon, being something of a one-trick pony – continued to write.

Previous to 1993, she wrote a non-Liaden space opera, The Tomorrow Log, which was roundly rejected by the SF houses. She then wrote an almost-cozy mystery – Barnburner, which was met with great editorial disinterest on the mystery side.

Which was when she decided to write – a Regency.

When we became a team, Steve had introduced Sharon to Georgette Heyer's Regency "romances.". She fell in love, as had so many before her.

But Sharon didn't want to just write a Regency. She wanted to write a Regency without having to actually do the necessary research.

One of the Cardinal Writing Rules is: Write What You Know. So, Sharon set about telling the story of two brothers, alike in estate, though not in temperament, each of whom needed an heir to fulfill the demands of family and society. These brothers lived just outside of Solcintra, the premier city on the planet Liad.

We'd like to pause here and reflect upon how very, very well Regency England, as portrayed by Georgette Heyer, dovetails with space opera. Heyer's task was to present her readers with a believable alien society operating by subtly different mores. The goal of space opera is to believably present alien societies operating under different, yet compelling, mores.
The Liaden Universe® operates under vastly different rules from Heyer's Regency Universe, but it is informed by the tenor of her narration, her phraseology, oh – and the clothes. Truly, we stand on the shoulders of a giant.

Returning to 1993, we had no expectation that Scout's Progress – or Local Custom – would ever be read by anybody but us. They were therefore written to amuse – us. Things that amuse us particularly are word-play; dry, understated humor; a certain grace – of manner and of person – protagonists with a strong sense of honor and right action, who are competent, though they may be flawed.

Improbably, Local Custom and Scout's Progress were published in February 2001, as original omnibus Pilots Choice, from Meisha Merlin Publishing.

It's apparently Traditional on occasions such as these for authors to reflect on what they would have done differently, were they writing the work being celebrated today.

And our answer is? Nothing.

Daav yos'Phelium and Aelliana Caylon have become reader favorites, and more than that, true pillars of the Liaden Universe®, supporting more than just their own happy ending.
Some readers, certainly, decry this novel, and Local Custom, as "Mills and Boone in space" – but we see that as a failure of their vision, not ours.

So, here we are, celebrating an unlikely anniversary. We hope that newcomers will enjoy Daav and Aelliana's story, and that those who have read the story before will be pleased to re-visit old friends.

Book Day!

And what book are we here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory celebrating on this day?

LIADEN UNIVERSE® CONSTELLATION, VOLUME 5

Let's just take a moment to admire that, up there in lights like it is.  Not only a compilation of Liaden Universe® short works, but the FIFTH such volume.

Sixty-three short works based in the Liaden Universe® are collected in those five volumes -- short stories, novellas, novelettes.  And six more queued up for inclusion in Volume 6.

. . . It's traditional at times like these for the artist to thank those who have helped them achieve a milestone.

So, first of all, I want to thank you -- our readers, for keeping the faith, and buying the books, and supporting our work in so very many ways.

I would also like to thank editors Colleen Doran, Jason Cordova, Eric Flint, Liz Holliday, Tanya Huff, Janis Ian, Warren Lapine, Lee Martindale, Joshua Palmatier, Christopher Ruocchio, Michael A. Ventrella, and Toni Weisskopf for publishing original short works set in the Liaden Universe®.

You guys ALL rock!

For those who may have been avoiding the short Liaden works, you don't have to have read the novels to understand -- and enjoy! -- the stories.  I understand that there are some people who eschew short stories because they're, err, short -- but there's not much to be done about that, "short" being the point of the form.

If you're still unconvinced, and would like to taste a couple for free before buying a whole book, here's a couple links:

Y'all know what today is, right?

Right!

It's Book Day! Carpe Diem by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller in an all-new paperback edition, with brand-new cover art by David Mattingly!

Carpe Diem was the third Liaden Universe® novel EVER published, appearing. . .

First! as a Del Rey mass market original in October 1989, cover art by Stephen Hickman.

Second! as part of the three-novel compilation, Partners in Necessity, in February 2000, cover art by Michael Herring.

Third! as a mass market from Ace Books, in February 2003, cover art by Michael Herring.

Fourth! as part of two-novel compilation, The Agent Gambit, from Baen Books, in January 2011, cover art by Alan Pollack.

Fifth! as a mass market paperback from Baen Books, today, February 25 2020, cover art by David Mattingly.

That's 31 years of active publishing life, which is pretty dern amazing.

So! Let's raise a glass to Carpe Diem!

On a related note -- today's publication of Carpe Diem means that the First Three Books, which is All The Liaden there was for seven-or-ten years (depending on if Steve's counting or I am) are all in print in the same format, and in stores, now. So this is the perfect time to do needy friends a favor and introduce them to Val Con, Miri, Edger, Shan, Priscilla, Mrs. Trelu, Hakan, Kem, and all the rest of the people who live in: Agent of Change, Conflict of Honors, and Carpe Diem.

Eeeh-HAH, Book Day! Always exciting. Even after so many years.

rolanni: (Snow goddess)

Today is the day!  The day that Accepting the Lance, the 22nd novel in the Liaden Universe® created by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller is officially released*!

We here at the Confusion Factory are of course very excited, and grateful that Baen was able to get the book -- submitted in January -- out this year.

We do know that there are a number of you who purchased the eARC, and therefore are finding the Book Day festivities a little flat.  If you wish, you may celebrate by leaving a review for LANCE on the venue of your choice.

The authors are celebrating each in our own way.  First, by announcing Book Day as far and as wide as we may.  Secondly, Steve is celebrating by working on the next book detailing the adventures of Jethri Gobelyn, which is due on Madame's desk in May 2020.  And, thirdly, I am celebrating by editing Trader's Leap, scheduled for publication in November/December 2020.

The chickadees, titmice, nuthatchen, goldfinches, sparrows, and cardinals are celebrating by mobbing the bird feeders, because it's snowing up a Real Storm here in Central Maine.

In other news, I am due at the surgeon's office tomorrow at 2 pm, by which time the snow will have stopped and the driveway cleared.  This visit will determine if my time in the Command Chair is about to end or if it will be another four weeks until I see my shadow.

Fingers crossed.

___________
*Yes, there is supposed to be an Audible edition.  No, I don't know why it's not available.  No, I don't know when it will be available.  Authors are always the last to know these things.  Naturally, I deplore my ignorance, and the distress of those who had hoped to listen to the book today, but, really, the non-appearance of the Audible edition is not my fault.

rolanni: (Default)

Y'all know what today is, right?

Right!

Today is the Official Book Day for Liaden Universe® Constellation Volume Four, published by Baen Books.  For those who are new in the neighborhood, this is be the fourth volume of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller's collected Liaden Universe® short works.  All stories in this volume has been previously published. The stories included are: Street Cred, Due Diligence, Friend of a Friend, Cutting Corners, Block Party, Degrees of Separation, Excerpts from Two Lives, Revolutionists.  The book also includes an Authors' Foreward.

You may purchase Liaden Universe® Constellation Volume Four from your favorite bookseller.  It is available in trade paper and as an ebook.  There is no audiobook edition.

For those who are familiar with the game, and who may be waiting for news of the books you preordered for signature -- I have news.

The news is:  Four (out of a possible five) cases of Liaden Universe® Constellation Volume Four are on a UPS truck and out for delivery.  They should arrive here at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory today.  The fifth case has been detained in Chelmsford, Mass., for an address check.  The Theory is that it, too, will be delivered today, but I. . .am not sanguine.

In any case, as soon as we have books in-house, Steve and I will grab our signing pens and get busy.  Hopefully, we can have the majority of the books back on the road to Uncle Hugo's in Minneapolis no later than Friday morning.

So, that.

I have been somewhat remiss in updating this blog.  To catch us up, quickly, we have been working -- still with the proofing of Conflict of Honors -- a little better than half-way done, now -- words are being written on the still-titleless Next Novel, some of which are replacing words that had already been there, so the whole thing right now feels very much like I'm running the Red Queen's Race (I say "I" because I am lead on this book).  In addition to Standing By on the current WIP, Steve is writing a short story, and also the third Jethri Gobelyn book (no title there, yet, either).

We've also been coping with Real Life, as everyone must -- health stuff, family stuff, political stuff -- y'all know what I'm talking about.

Steve and I did take part in a little hometown activism last weekend, which was Pride Weekend in our town.  Part of the festivities included a Drag Queen Story Hour hosted by local bookstore.  Some folks became offended by this, and organized a protest -- which was fine* -- and some other folks organized a counter-protest -- a demonstration of love for our local bookstore, support of the story hour and for Pride Weekend.  Steve and I were there in support of the bookstore, and mostly, it was good.  Tiring, but good.  For those interested, here's a link to the local newspaper's coverage of the event.

And here's a picture me getting ready to demonstrate.

. . .and I think that catches us up.

Everybody play nice.

________________________
*Forgot my footnote, to wit! WHAT WAS NOT FINE was that some of the outraged citizens took it upon themselves, pre-event, to harass and threaten the Drag Queen who was scheduled to do the reading to the point where she feared for her safety, and withdrew from the event.  Happily, Miss Ophelia was pleased to step in and read to a room that was shoulder-to-shoulder, and that's with some of the smaller folk sitting on shoulders.

Book Day!

rolanni: (Degrees of Separation)

Degrees of Separation: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 27! is officially released today.

You may purchase it at all of the usual ebook outlets.  Those who fancy paper, may purchase a paperback copy at Amazon.

A special thank you to the 730-ish folks who preordered, thereby assisting with our experiment.  For Science!

I spent the weekend going through Fifth of Five, moving scenes, removing scenes, rewriting scenes -- which is not as easy as it sounds.  Still got a bit of that to finish up, and then we can see where we are.

Everybody stay warm.

Today! is the Official Release Day* for Necessity's Child by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller
