rolanni: (Necessity's Child)

Today! is the Official Release Day* for Necessity's Child by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

This is the book that nobly bore the working title of George, and which was pitched to Ms. Weisskopf at Baen, when was only a gleam in its authors' eye as "a steampunk Liaden story, with space gypsies."

Yeah, we almost hit that.

If you're new to the Liaden Universe® -- or if you're an old-timer who's on the fence about buying a "side book" -- you may, if you like, read  the first nine chapters, free, right here at the Baen webiste.

Necessity's Child hardcover is available from your favorite bookstore, and also from these fine vendors:

Uncle Hugo's Science Fiction Bookstore
BN.com
Amazon.com
And! in audiobook format from Audible.com

*Yes, yes; I know some of you read it months ago.  You may dance, too!  No, really; I insist.

While I will eventually be able to do this comparison myself on the fly, my hardcover won't reach me for a bit, and I don't have the appropriate reading-space-in-my-schedule for even longer.

How much difference is there between the eARc I already read (it was fabulous!) and the published hardcover?

I think the biggest change is the unicorns.

In the eArc, their horns are white. Whereas in the hardcover, they have black horns.

Of course, these are the unicorns that aren't there in either one.

;-)

Offhand, I didn't notice any big tectonic reading shifts when I read the ebook.

Although I've been told that hardcovers smell better. No real noticeable odor to the eArc or ebook, at least on my iPod Touch.

This one was pretty clean. There were some small continuity errors, on the order of someone is described as sitting "between" two friends, and another person is directed to sit "next" to the first person. And a fruit is offered early in the book that doesn't actually arrive until much later.

No story-altering changes.

I was very excited to see it in the store this weekend...and then had to stop myself from buying it as my copy will be heading off for you to sign at Boskone. Impatient though!

Waiting anxiously for my signed hard copy from Uncle Hugo! Read the e-arc copy, and have been re-reading the earlier set of Theo's adventures so I'll be ready to read on the printed page. Have fun at Boskone!

Happy Bookday! It was a fun read and I would love hear more about the school on Surebleak in particular (whenever you find time to write it in).

Just finished the ebook (in one sitting, naturally) and the thing that brought the biggest smile to my face was a silly thing: Taplow Street. For someone living 5,000 miles from home seeing the name of my home village, Taplow, immortalised thus gave me a warm fuzzy and I thank you for that.

I haz a sad. I've been buying all of the Liadan books to read on my Nook (there comes a point at which one's walls are too crowded with books to hold anymore. Thus the seperation between "WE read this" and "I read this". I've yet to hook my husband on your books except for the Crystal Variation. Darn it.)

Is there any news about when it will be released to epubs?

...I have a Confused. If you've been buying all of the Liaden books to read on your Nook, then surely you've been buying them directly from Baen (http://www.baenebooks.com/) -- which you can still do.

I expect that Baen will eventually negotiate a contract with BN for inclusion in their Nook Store, but I don't know when, or even really, if.

Well now, there's a "duh". Of course I've been buying via Baen. May I blame my post on "lack of caffiene" while I switch out my orange juice for tea?
