Back in the summer, against my better judgment, I bought a couple pair of acid-washed jeans, compelled by the fact that they (1) fit and (2) were cheap. This morning, I notice a series of frayed holes starting at the hem of one leg and going up a good two inches. Swiss cheese jeans. Not the fashion statement one wishes to make at the beginning of a Maine winter.

The day and the work unto included data entry, bookkeeping, data entry and for a change, data entry. Everything should now be ready for the bigBigREALLYBIG mailing of With Stars Underfoot. I make it out as exactly 400 pre-orders. The print-run is 500 chapbooks. Assuming the usual number of eek-I-missed-the-pre-order-can-I-still-buy-a-copies? after Thanksgiving, we're looking like selling out of the first printing before Christmas. Yowza!

Tomorrow, the old stove she is disconnected early by the propane company. Somewhat later, the merry gnomes from Home Despot will come and take it away, leaving in its stead a beautiful new appliance with a simmer burner, a high-heat burner, two normals -- all of them enclosed, and an oven that will, I hope, not pop, spit, WHUMPF and fuss; and which will hold its temperature and not try to kill the humans as a sort of side hobby. Thursday morning, the propane company will return and hook-up the new stove. And then we shall see.

Hey, at least the holes appeared in moderately-innocent locations....

You remind me of why we have enjoyed the electric stoves of our current abode. Old gas stoves can be ... interesting. But then, as a person raised in areas with piped natural gas and the resulting periodic house-leveling "boom," I have not rushed out to get our house piped for the new-fangled stuff now coming in from Canada.

Hey, at least the holes appeared in moderately-innocent locations....

This was my initial thought. But, since I'd bought two pair at the same time and one cannot count on such extraordinary luck holding, I took the Swiss cheese pair with me to town today and inquired at the emporium at which they had been purchased if this happened often to their house jeans. Amazement! Consternation! and Disbelief! later, I got a brand new pair of jeans in trade for the disintegrating pair, which are being sent up to Quality Control.

You remind me of why we have enjoyed the electric stoves of our current abode.

I've only lived with one electric stove in my life and we could not reach a mutually satisfactory accommodation.

I wouldn't have wanted to do that seven days without power a few years back without at least being able to cook stove top, so an electric stove is out on two counts. I hear you can cook on a woodstove, but I wouldn't like to try it. The problem with the former stove was that it was old and crotchety. And dangerous. That, too.
