Went in to the hospital this morning very early, armed with coffee and A Night in the Lonesome October, so Steve and I could get caught up with Snuff and Jack. About a page into "October 17" the hospitalist arrived, and we all had a nice chat.

I'd had hopes of bringing Steve home today, but his fever is stubborn and the hospital won't turn him loose until it's within "normal" range for X readings in a row. Trouble being that, in anticipation of sending him home, the doctor had ordered the intravenous antibiotic stopped and prescribed oral antibiotics. And the pills aren't hacking it. So! Steve is back on the drip today instead of coming home.

Maybe tomorrow, says the doctor.

Also, as reported yesterday, there are two issues going on. The pneumonia-with-stubborn-fever, which is what took us to ER on Sunday night, and a discovered heart problem which is going to take some testing, maintenance, and Who Knows What(tm) after the dern pneumonia's put to bed.

And...that's what I've got this morning.

Thanks again to everyone for your advice, insights, and care. Very much appreciated!

My husband's heart condition was discovered during a hospital stay last year. We still don't know what the attack that sent him to the hospital was but while he was there, they discovered that one cardiac artery was entirely blocked and another was 80% blocked. It's meant big changes in our lives.

God be with you both.

Oh, we know we can't help with the Day Job, or Deadlines. But stuffing mailers for SRM Publisher. Or scritching cats.

Glad they discovered it now instead of when it decides to become a bigger problem. Sending good thoughts for the fever to go away quick.

Seconding this. If, down the road, you'd like some suggestions on handling heart issues, please let me know.

Everyone else here in the office sends their regards, as well.

Absolutely. My grandmother would have declared this a mitzvah. And rightly so.

Sending positive fever-reducing vibes. Maybe you should be reading Left Hand of Darkness to him. That's a cold book. Always wanted to put more clothes on while reading it. :D

Much better to find out now and head off further issues with it. You both and the fur kids are in my thoughts. I am not as much use, but if I can help from Mass let me know.

thank you for the update. disturbing, but more disturbing if they were pushing him out of the hospital with these things unresolved.

Thinking about both of you a lot. These are stressful times, even when the medical folks know what to do.

I'll hope no one jostles his IV too much, that he's got energy to read, and that his roommate does not insist on loud bouts of Wheel of Fortune.

I hope the evil pneu gives up and leaves him alone soon, and that you'll have good news (manageable-ness, at the least) on the rest. Take care ♥

Bless you all, and I am praying, if you don't object. They can do awesome things for heart conditions nowadays; my father has had a serious complaint for a good 20 years, and in his 80s is still ticking along; currently off with my mother to a genealogy conference. It is absolutely maddening getting diagnosed and treated and fussed with; here's hoping you're both sorted and settled ASAP.

Best wishes to you both. At least you've got a better idea of what is going on now which is less frightening than speculation and fears. I hope Steve's condition is resolved as easily and with as little upset as mine - some pills each day and a regimen of diet and exercise that has meant no reccurence of the heart problem in the last 5 years.

A Night in the Lonesome October is exactly right. You can't get behind on it this year!

Wish there was something we could do for you. Let us know -- if necessary, you can ship fliers to people who will fold and staple....
