rolanni: (Yay!)

Today is Theo Waitley’s birthday.  That’s right, on this date in 2007, the first chapter of Fledgling was posted on the interwebs.  I trust everyone has marked their calendars and have suitable celebrations planned.

Since that first, auspicious appearance, Theo has broadened her horizons considerably.  Not only has she pursued her dream of  becoming a courier pilot, but she has been published in ebook, hardback, and paperback by Baen, and hit various bestseller lists, including the Wall Street Journal Bestselling Science Fiction list.

As this is Theo’s fifth birthday, I’d say a little gentle embarrassment is in order.  How about this?  Let’s share our favorite memories of her in comments.

NOTE:  Those who have not read the books (Fledgling, and Saltation, that would be), please be aware that there may well be spoilers in comments, and click at your own risk.

So, everybody pull up a chair — no, wait!  I’m forgetting something.  Before we settle in, punch and cake in hand, to reminisce, let’s gather in a circle, join hands, and say the magic words:

Happy birthday, Theo!

Actually, I like the "stereo effect" of comparing that section of Saltation and I Dare.

When Theo found out that the delm of Korval was not just a mythical figure in a children's book.

I have many favorites. I love the moment when she realizes that Daav is more than she thought he was (I may be misremembering this).

I also love when she gets the key from Win Ton. And her escape to the big fancy restaurant (whose name escapes me).

Just come back from Melchiza, when she sees Daav and realizes he is the pilot-who-trained-her.

Or when she and Win Ton get on the Dance Machine together.

Oh yes, I loved her and Win Ton on the dance machine. I'm a hopeless romantic, so just about any time she and Win Ton are together is a favorite scene of mine:)

when she found carrying someone else's luggage wasn't for her. Every dorm mate learns that one or gets walked all over.

I liked the scene in which Theo stole and learned to fly/drive the scooter to get to Jen Sar's house before the trip to Melchiza. This scene didn't make it through the final edits, which I thought was too bad.

Oh, I'd forgotten that scene! Yes, that was lots of fun.

And, echoing, "Father, where the hell have you been?"

My favorite scene was probably where Theo learned to play the ball game that I can't remember the name of right now.

I'm not sure of my favorite moment, maybe having dinner at the house with Jen Sar after she sneaked back to visit. But there are many memorable moments, sitting on the floor of her old room, with the koi fish swimming beneath her and the cat on her lap; finding out she is supposedly a Nexus of Chaos/Violence; playing boli ball; the dance machine; special time with Win Ton; finding out the truth about the Delm of Korval. (We do need that children's book.)

Happy B-day Theo!! Many Sequel Returns!

I hope I'm remembering correctly. When Daav comes back Val Con asks him, "Father, where the hell have you been?" And when Theo finds him she says "Father, where the hell have you been?".

Favorite memories:
The conversation between Kamele and Jen Sar/Daav about Theo's coming appearance in their lives - especially the polite formula at the end about Happy...
Theo comparing dance to math, starting to gain confidence, playing in the gravity wave on the ship
... and all of the wonderful, free-ranging and sometimes fierce discussions among those of us who were welcoming her to the world. (Mondays were special days!)

Many happy returns and awards, Theo

PS Sometimes Theo reminds me of Cantra and sometimes she is so young and uncynical, she is just her-own-unique-self.

PPS I wonder how she and Kareen will get on? (insert evil grin)

Also a day late due to obligations to a Guest of the House... my favourite thing about Theo is that waiting for mondays kept me sane whilst everything else was falling down around me. Thank you, Theo, I'm in your debt.

Mine is a bit meta -- getting a big tax return, and being able to sponsor a couple chapters on my own. No words for how happy that paypal transaction made me, knowing I was directly supporting a pair of beloved storytellers.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Theo

It's kind of a little scene, but I love the scene when Theo and Kamele return from Melchiza and Theo is picking up the bags. She deftly gets her bags avoiding the other clumsier customer and I think of it as a sort of reversal of the scene where she and another student stumble on the beltway and Theo gets a black mark for clumsiness on her record. This time Theo has grown into her own and avoids a mishap. It's just cool.

Favorite dialogue (actually from I Dare)
