Rats.

Well, I guess it'll be there soon. I uploaded both files last night, one right after the other, so you'd think...

Now it's here. Ordered, and it will be downloaded as soon as I can connect to the library's wireless...

Any chance of a Smashwords (https://www.smashwords.com/) release?

Date: 2011-04-14 06:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com
Dunno. Smashwords distributes to BN and Amazon (for a piece of the action, naturally). Since we're selling to BN and Amazon ourselves, that bit doesn't make too much sense. If there's a Smashwords-only deal that we could sign up for -- then it would depend on the deal.

From: [identity profile] tuftears.livejournal.com
Apparently all you have to do is opt out of the 'retail partners' you're already distributing through directly. (https://www.smashwords.com/about/supportfaq#Publishing) I haven't tried it myself, so hopefully someone will correct me if this is wrong!

Thank you -- I had thought it was one deal or no deal, so it's helpful to know that's not so.

I'll take a closer look around, though probably not this evening.

Thanks! I'm hoping to be able to keep the number of places I have ebooks to one as opposed to having some stored in Smashwords and others in Amazon and still others in... Sigh. :)

borders/google? It's the DRM - I can't use either BN or Amazon.

Date: 2011-04-14 10:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rolanni.livejournal.com
Shouldn't be DRM'd. The publisher gets to choose whether or not their books have DRM, and we chose "no."

You can read Amazon books on your PC, iPhone, iPad and sundry other devices.

I'd be curious, too, if that were the case, but both vendors are charging $2.99. Are you sure you're looking at the ebook edition in both places?

It's available now on amazon.co.uk

I'll buy it as soon as I run Windows - there isn't a Kindle for Ubuntu app yet.

Just ordered a hard copy of Ghost Ship and Skyblaze from Uncle Hugo's yesterday, now have a copy of Skyblaze on my Kindle from Amazon. Life is good. Didn't get to keep my job though. Thanks for the good wishes. More time for reading and gardening. Kathy from CA.

LOL!

I'm not going to be able to keep the pace, I fear. This afternoon, Steve and I met in town after the day-job released me. We toured the renovated library and had a milkshake. Now, for some reason, I just don't feel like compiling an ebook.

Looks like Halfling Moon's on deck, though. . .

In case you didn't know, most of the chapbooks (except for the latest 2 or 3, I think) are available as ebooks from Baen Webscriptions in 2 volumes, Liaden Unibus I and II.

This may be a duplicate, in which case I apologize.
The point being, those of us who waited until late March to get the hardcover, now find that 2 weeks later we could have gotten it for a LOT less via e-books.

And you want me to what, exactly, about this?

We are conducting an experiment to find out if it's worth our time to release the backlisted chapbooks as ebooks. Steve has not been in favor, and it took some negotiation to get the go-ahead to try uploading a few. A new one, and an old one. Another newish one and an old one in the pipeline. We'll see.

In the meantime, you, lucky woman, had your book two weeks ago; you ordered it knowing (you did KNOW this, right?) that it was paper. Most of the people who buy the paper chapbooks buy them because (1) the paper chapbooks are autographed (yours is autographed, right?) and (2) because it directly supports the authors. We've been doing a Yule chapbook, in paper, since 1995. It is, A Tradition.

Ordered and still waiting for paper version of Skyblaze from SRM (have all the others in paper too). I enjoy your books. Thank you

Grabbed Skyblaze and looking forward to Halfling Moon!

As data for your experiment, I will buy any that I don't already have available in the Companions or Baen Unibuses, but not those I already have collected. If these newer stories were later collected, there's a good change I would also buy the collection, especially if a hard copy were available.

I imagine if the Yule Chapbook were available as an ebook around the same time as the paper version in future, that would increase overall sales but probably reduce paper ones. I'm not sure how the cost/benefit analysis works out for you (might be good to have fewer to post?) but if the paper sales are important, maybe 3 or 6 months later for the e-copy would be a good compromise for everyone.

Yes, please, do make backlisted chapbooks available in ebook format. It's been great, getting these announcements and going right to Amazon to pick them up. I wanted to drop a note to say thank you for putting them on Kindle; my living space is seriously limited so ebooks are the way to go for me and I am all excited to pick them up as they come out.

Yay! Definitely just bought it, read it. It was awesome.

Can I request that you at least upload those chapbooks that were not included in Unibuses 1 and 2? I, at least, will definitely buy them.

I actually prefer having electronic copies of things to hardcopies, in many cases, because ebooks are a lot harder to lose. Also they have the truly excellent quality of being available for reading on a moment's notice, wherever you are, as long as you have a suitable device with an internet connection. Which unless I'm in a subway tunnel, I pretty much always do.

So yeah. Please tell Steve that you would have at least one customer for your chapbook backlist if you went to the trouble of making them available as ebooks.

Thanks muchly!

Meara

Hokay, I am going to buy Skyblaze and *try* to read it on PC. Wish me luck! Thanks for the suggestions on how to do it from Daffyd and Rosemary, and if they're ever interested in carriage driving then I can repay the favor!

I had all the hardcopy chapbooks except Skyblaze, which I ordered this week. Also getting them as ebooks. Have a friend who lost his entire library (and the rest of the house) to a fire. This way I at least have mine on the Kindle, which is easier to carry in case of natural disaster. It supports the authors too, who I would pay to stay home and write full time if I only had the credits. Thanks to you both! Kathy CA

I'm guessing "thatt" should be "that".

I've only downloaded the sample so far. This will turn out to be a mistake, since I'll have to wait for the full story to download when I hit the end of the sample... :)

Also posted a review both at B&N and Amazon.
Much as I like full length books I'll aways have time for your shorter works. Availability as an ebook means both easier on my hands, storage space, and stretches my limited budget, so please do keep it up!

Also, really enjoyed the chance to 'meet' another 'ordinary' person who does the best she can, and a very good best that is!

Sigh, have ot go with Anon since I can't remember pw for LJ. I'm mtz322 there if I can ever get in again.
