I hear from Mr. Blyly that he has today received 34 cases, 852 pounds, 680 individual autographed copies of Ghost Ship. In hardcover.

Yes, the street date for Ghost Ship, unsigned, is August 2. Yes, that means Mr. Blyly has received the signed books that required special handling more than a month ahead of that date. No, no one involved in this transaction knows why, but I think we can safely say that this is not Mr. Blyly’s fault. Nor ours.

I trust that this is clear.

Thirty-four cases of hardcover book makes, as I know from long experience of receiving cases of books to sign from Meisha Merlin back in the day, Quite A Large Pile there in the middle of the living-room-or-store. Mr. Blyly would, quite naturally, like to remove this impediment to commerce from the doorway and aisles of his store in as timely a fashion as possible.

So! If you want your book RIGHT NOW, and don’t care to have it personalized (there is a July 15 deadline for requesting personalization; those that request personalizations will have to wait for us — that’s Steve and Sharon — to get our sorry tails to Minneapolis sometime in the middle of August, find a pen and get to work), write to Mr. Blyly at unclehugoATaolDOTcom and tell him that you want your book mailed immediately.

If Mr. Blyly does not receive your direction to mail your book(s) immediately, he will be in honor forced to hold it/them until after the July 15 deadline for personalization requests.

I trust that this is also clear.

Excellent.

I confidently leave the matter in your capable hands.

Would it be possible for you to mail out signed bookplates? I would take our copy immediately but it's a present for my husband and I kinda promised a signed copy.

I am a little confused myself - I thought the deal was to preorder books and the books would be autographed. The post suggests that the hardcovers received have already been autographed, but that there is an additional 'personalization' that may be added. This part is news to me!

Steve & Sharon signed many pieces of paper. These pieces of paper were bound into these books. After all of the arrangements for this were made, Sharon & Steve discovered they could stop in Minneapolis and sign at Uncle Hugo's on their way home from Worldcon. So, if you just want the signature, that's ready now. If you want them to personalize it, they can do so in late August, but it will delay you getting your book.

Thank you, this is clarified! I don't really know what I'd ask for in a personalization, so I'll simply ask Mr. Blyly to go ahead and ship my copy. ^_^

Psst -- take a look at the infodumpling http://rolanni.livejournal.com/680395.html

Turns out Sharon and Steve are going to make a flying visit to Uncle Hugo's late in August, and they have offered to personalize some of the already autographed volumes IF requested.

So -- yes, we ordered and pre-paid for autographs, which are already in the books (I think they did a magic "sign these sheets" and then bound the sheets into the books, which reduces the shipping). And yes, there is additional personalization possible...

My reading of the post is this: The publisher has sent the books to Uncle Hugo's, unsigned. At some point in August Sharon'n'Steve will go to Uncle Hugo's and sign them. The option here being offered is that you can get your book now, but if you do it won't be signed.

[edited to add: Never mind. Apparently my reading was wrong. I'd forgotten about the many pieces of paper.]

The publisher has sent the books to Uncle Hugo's, unsigned.

And yet there are in the original post, above, words like "autographed" and "signed".

It's funny the things a person can fail to notice when it doesn't fit a person's mental model, isn't it?

Ahem.

The books that arrived at Uncle Hugo's are signed (I quote from the post at the top of this thread: "680 individual autographed copies" and yet again "Yes, that means Mr. Blyly has received the signed books"). We signed eight hundred pieces of paper, one by one, and shipped them to Baen to be shipped to the printer, to be bound into those very same volumes that arrived today.

If you want your book *personalized*, then you need to wait until Steve and I and the book are in the same room with a pen -- which will happen in August.

I had missed the earlier bit in the infodumpling[1] that you were going to personalise them /as well as/ being pre-signed, so was a little confused, but fortunately it had been clarified by the time I got reading this. So I'll let them know they can send mine and reduce the mountain a tad, I just have to find the order (well, they can probably find me without but it's kinder if I can give them a reference).

Seanan's first book was sold out (or close to it) before the publication date, because the stores got it around a month early. Better early than late, I think.

[1] Incidentally I love the term 'infodumpling', it conjures up images of an 'infostew' which is a term with applicability here (the information is in the docs somewhere but it's all been mixed up and bubbling).

Looking forward to early arrival. Can maybe take it on my vacation instead of waiting until I get back.

Then I remembered, I'm going to Renovation so I could get them personalized there! Hmmm.

Well, I'm a little torn here... I'd LOVE to have it personalized, but since we have not yet met in PERSON, I don't know... Would it be an added burden on you, this unadvertised and unlooked for personalization? An added burden on Mr. Blyly? I don't want to be add burden, the autograph itself is full of awesome, and, is it terribly shallow of me to want personalization? Hurrrr..... I, I just don't KNOW! And then of course, is this dithering on my part just as burdensome?

One hopes it is merely amusing...

Welp, hubby wants personalization as well, so I guess I have my answer, shallow or not! Huzzah!

Done. I wasn't expecting this so early and have ordered another copy from the "massive corporate shipper" to take to Renovation for the personalized signature. Now I'll have 2. Additionally, since I read the sample chapters on Baen's website, I've been on tenterhoooks for the rest of it.

Whoa, Nelly!

I'm amazed at the early delivery. Professionally, I mean. The
earliest I ever get stuff is like 2 weeks ahead of pub date.
I can understand his dismay, though, especially if he has as
little backroom area as I do. This is a fortune that is double-
bladed.

Lauretta@ConstellationBooks, who is up to her eyebrows in Star Trek
books (there's a con next weekend) and Summer Required Reading.
Quite the contrast!

I've been out of town for a few days, but have now discovered this post and sent my missive with permission for my 3 copies to ship now, complete with the original order confirmation email.

I'm thrilled at the prospect of not having to wait patiently for them to arrive in the mail while restraining myself from grabbing a copy from my local bookstore shelf.
