Fine story, and an excellent sense of closure for the Ren-Zel story. I sent a donation to Splinter Universe but failed to tag it as being in honor of Kin Ties.

Enjoy your travels.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Ren Zel is one of my favorite characters and I am all joy to encounter him thus again in such a deftly crafted and entertaining story. It was deeply satisfying to learn that indeed Jabun did reap the Balance he had sown, as Ren Zel's Foretelling had predicted in Changeling and also to know that his Aunt Chane has had her heart Healed from its long pain. Honor and Balance and the Dragon's meddling to good purpose.

What a GOOD idea this short story project is proving to be and I for one am happy to encourage it with another donation. The check will be in the mail, timed to arrive when you all return from your travels. I don't do Pay Pal so snail mail will suit the purpose admirably. If we are very very lucky, the train trip will allow you to produce another short story for our delectation and eventually perhaps enough of them to compile into another chapbook or maybe even a contracted book with Baen of Liaden themed short stories. Are there any plans to enable us to buy electronic versions to load on our ereaders as we do with the chap books?

Bravo. More, more, more!

Now, see? It was worth the wait.

I'm pretty pleased with it my own self.

Are there any plans to enable us to buy electronic versions to load on our ereaders as we do with the chap books?

The plan is eventually to retire the stories from the site and make them available in eChapbook form from the Usual Suspects.

I don't know about anyone else but I would certainly go ahead and buy an e-version now even while it is available free on the site. I got my Kindle specifically for traveling...I always buy dead tree versions to read at home...so it wouldn't bother me at all to have it downloadable now for a dollar or so. Another revenue stream to gently swell the flow. And then, when a sufficient number of the short stories were available they could be bundled. Maybe you could offer a poll or comment post specifically to see if I'm the only one who wouldn't object to having access to a download version sooner rather than later even while the free version runs.

I'd buy something for my iPod Touch! But if you prefer to make a bundle before making it available... huh, you could make a subscription version? Buy your Splinter Universe Bundle #1 now for ??? and as the stories are written, it will be populated? Whatever works for you -- but getting a nicely prepared epub, rtf etc. version for the mobile library (Stanza for me) would be nice. And bring in more shekels for the storyteller bending over her bowl...

Thank you so much!! I loved to see more of Anthora y Ren Zel's interaction. Poor Aunt Chena, she has no idea about the "scoundrel" and if finding out that Ren Zel was a pilot was strange, what will she think when she finds out that he is of the dramliz, married to the most powerfull dramliza, barred himself? Oh... my... Hope to see some people of Clan Obrelt in the upcoming installments! I left a donation last weekend through the Splinter Universe donation button. Not much, but I plan to make it regularly, so I hope it helps. And I added Changelling (and couldn't resist Carousel Tides and bought it too... can't resist non traditional Fae thrown into a good story, haha)

That was lovely. One of the things that always appeals in your short stories is the glimpse of background events that wouldn't fit into the main narrative flow of the novels. I enjoyed seeing what Anthora and Ren Zel had been doing prior to their re-appearance in Ghost Ship. I left a donation through the site in honour of both "Kin Ties" and "Intelligent Design" which, despite flying under the "free Baen read" banner should also be acknowledged.

Wonderful story and a great, even if unexpected, end.
Really well done.
Like others, am very amenable to an e collection.
Thank you.

Very heartwarming story. And yes, thanks for letting us know about the adventure Anthora and Ren Zel had before returning to Surebleak. Luckily I was sitting right near the Kleenex box.

Will "Intelligent Design" also be available from you or does it belong to Baen?

I'm very annoyed, as you know, but will have to buy an e-reader. Probably a Kindle. There are rumors of a holiday sale.

Thanks,
C.

I don't know about ultimate disposition, but the Baen "front page" stories are being collected in a free ebook when they shuffle off the front page -- so Intelligent Design will be available that way in the near future. The URL? http://www.webscription.net/p-1387-free-short-stories-2011.aspx but it doesn't yet have ID in it. Patience... is hard to wait for.

Claire, did you ever get your Kindle for PC? If not, I'd be happy to talk you through the installation via email. Then you could see if you like the format etc.

Found both Intelligent Design and Kin Ties yesterday and I have to thank you for making a pretty crappy week oh-so-much better with your fabulous writing. :)

I am not an ebook reader. Reading from technology for a long period of time gives me a headache. =(. So I was wondering if you would release another omnibus with all the Liaden short stories to date? The Liaden Big Bang pack on webscription seems to have different stories as the Liaden Companions. Then again the Companions are going from 200 each on amazon.
