rolanni: (Tea and dragon)
[personal profile] rolanni

This morning, I donned the little air bladder cast and drove myself to town to do errands. I hit Staples, and the post office, and Framemakers, and the grocery store. I am now exhausted, my foot aches and has swollen a bit to register its outrage. I’ll call that a balanced outcome, I guess.

What I dislike most is that the fall, and subsequent combined zoo and circus of the sprain, has made me very, very, very timid of ice and snow. Living in Maine as I do, this is not a good thing. But the reality of things is that I cannot afford to fall again, and knowing that makes me tense. And, yanno, more likely to fall.

Have to work on that, I guess.

In other news, “Intelligent Design,” and “The Space at Tinsori Light,” have been collected into eChapbook Legacy Systems: Adventures in the Liaden Universe® Number 19, now available from the Nook store  and the Kindle store .  A Smashthing edition has to wait (with The Day they brought the Bears to Belfast)  until I have a chunk of time to do the conversion.

We will be adding some more splinters to Splinter Universe, so watch the skies.

And now?  I’m hitting the sofa with a manuscript, a red pen, a glass of ice tea and some aspirin.

What’re you doing today?

What’re you doing today?

a little yardwork since its clear and dry, and perhaps sitting and watching the birds and the squirrels.

Studying for an exam (for work). By which I mean energetically avoiding reading about query execution plans by checking LJ.

Catching up on the internet after spending 5 of the last 7 days out on the trails clearing trees.

Do the overshoes/strap ons with spikes work for you? I don't get out in icy conditions enough to have experience, but some of the snow people I know swear by them. Google for "ice shoes" seems to pull up a decent selection.

Icers are one of the best spiked soles. I've used them for hiking on frozen creeks.

I have a pair -- YakTrax, I think they are -- and there's nothing like them for ice-walking.

The one design drawback is that the *only* thing they're good for is walking on ice -- walking on wooden steps to get down to the ice field between the house and the car? A little tricky on spikes, and a wavery ankle.

I had a triple fracture + dislocation of my ankle and I understand that in some ways a bad sprain is actually worse...I empathize.

Nothing today, but Wed. - bank, taxes, dry cleaning, post office, groceries. Ya know, all the things that make life easier (?).

What am I doing today, you ask?....well, let's see...

Physical Therapy at 10:00 ; he really pushed hard today but it feels good to stretch my limits.

Radiation Therapy at 1:00 ; that was a real blast! (Pun totally intended)

Laughing Yoga at 3:00 ; I am sure that will be a gallon of giggles.

6:00 to 8:00 I will work on extending my qualifications with OSHA via the net. Somebody stop me!

Clearly, I AM having too much fun.

There are some claw things that one is supposed to be able to put on over shoes to make ice and snow more navigable. Now me, I just stay home if it looks nasty, because falling is Very Bad. (Though not as awful as it was a few months ago. I currently seem to be able to get up again.)

FWIW, I found myself in a similar timid space after slipping on ice and smashing my wrist to bits. It does get better. I no longer flinch when I have to cross a patch of ice, though I do walk slowly and carefully. Snow doesn't stop me at all. It took me about 3 years to get here. You will, too.

Having had my own slips, I can relate. I now take my cane if things look icey, even if my back isn't acting up - it gives me a little extra security.

Spent today applying massive amounts of heat and pain/anti-inflammatory to the stubborn strained muscles in my right arm, and carefully avoiding using same. There is improvement, but it does still hurt.

Sprains

As I've said I've got a very sprained knee. the knee has a bad main ligament. I also have arthritis in both my knees. The orthopedic surgeon found the arthritis having done x rays but missed the bad ligament which is actually the more painful by not ordering an MRI for me. So today I went to the chiropracter who does physical therapy on the knee twice a week: electric grabby thingie...it grabs your muscles and kind of excercizes them and then ultrasound. I recommend physical therapy a lot.\

For now I have to stay completely off the knee. So I'm rolling around my house on my computer chair. Sprains unfortunately heal very slowly.

Also if you go to a web site www.nikken.com for Nikken - A multilevel marketing company perhaps they can put you in touch with one of their distributors. They have the most marvelous pain relieving cream. It's called CM Complex Cream. I've tried all the others, the ones from the store and another one and the CM Cream is fantastic. Expensive but worth it.

Luckily for me, as I have to walk on with a crutch there's been very little snow and ice here this winter.

Good luck.

Sorry if I missed this, but is it possible to buy the 'big' books via some method, for use on a Kindle (so I guess, read 'Amazon')? I've spotted the chapbooks, of which I own a few in both formats (hard & soft copy), but I'd love to get the big guns. Suggestions?

If by "big books" you mean the novels -- you can buy them in various formats -- including .mobi (for kindle) directly from Baen. Try this: http://www.baenebooks.com/s-117-sharon-lee.aspx
