So!  Exciting doin's here at the Confusion Factory.

Yesterday, my Galaxy 7" Tab arrived.  After letting it warm up, and charging it, I turned it on and was immediately freaked out to find that! it had found the photo that I use as background on my phone and imported it for its own use.  These things are getting 'way too smart.  While it was rustling around inside the phone's brain, it also imported all of my Usual Apps, while finding the Cat Farm's wireless network, and updating its own firmware.  I still haven't figured out how to move my elibrary over to it (part of the point of this was to be able read ebooks on it); that'll be for today, in-between sessions with Necessity's Child. Also definitely need to get a screen protector, else I won't be able to see the beautiful screen through the forest of my fingerprints.  Not to mention Mozart's nose prints.  He? Is convinced the new! shiny! belongs to him.

Attention Boskone Attendees!

We have received our preliminary schedules, and unless timing changes radically, we will be hosting a Friends of Liad breakfast on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. (yes, yes; but I have a reading scheduled for 10 a.m.) at Saucity, which is in the hotel. We're assuming that they will still be offering the Saturday morning buffet breakfast with your choice of made-on-the-spot omelets.  We hope to see lots of early risers.  Do remember, the FoL breakfast is an informal gathering of friends; we are each responsible for paying our own check.

We are also at the moment scheduled for a Literary Beer (or, in my case, wine) on Saturday at 4 p.m.  Sign-up at the con.

Also on Saturday (unless things change), we'll be talking Liaden Universe® and Matters Astronomical with Brother Guy Consolmagno at 1 p.m.

We will of course post our final schedule when that arrives.

In other news, Netflix has sent along Source Code for our viewing pleasure, since Puss 'n Boots isn't available yet.  What other recent movies did I miss that I really ought to catch up on?  Remember that my tastes run to such things as:  UP, Adventures in Babysitting, Second Hand Lions, Earth Girls Are Easy, Cowboys and Aliens, Pride and Prejudice, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Thin Man, and similar uplifting cinematic experiences.

I just saw Invictus and really enjoyed it. Though being political and sports related, it may not fit your stated preferences.

I must get on the list for puss n boots :-)

The two movies I saw last year were Kung Fu Panda 2 and The Muppets. This year, so far it is the Sherlock Holmes movie.

It's an oldie, but I love "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", and the new Sherlock Holmes was great.

I also have a Galaxy Tab 7 inch which I use as my primary ebook reading device. I find that I much prefer the black background with white text for reading. It's easier my tired old eyes.

Maybe you can help me. I've had a very frustrating day trying to move books from my PC to the Nook app on the new tab (or really, just anywhere on the new tab) and likewise music -- with no success at all.

I've downloaded drivers, something called KIES that took FOREver to download, more firmware, a new version of Windows Media Player...finally my PC can! see! that I have a Blessed Android Device attached to it, oh happy day. I drag the files I want from the PC to the tab, and!

You have no sideloaded books, sniffs the Nook.

God, She knows where the music went.

So, James...how do you move stuff from your PC to your Tab?

When you connect the tablet to the computer, in the top bar of the android screen you will see the in the notification bar a little USB symbol (kind of like a trident with balls on the two outer tips. Slide that bar down (like you do for lots of things in the notification bar - kind of like a roller windowshade.)

Touch the line that says "USB connected" and it will offer the opportunity to "mount" your android device. Usually when you slide it down you will see a green android guy.

Touch the button that says "mount" and the Android guy will turn orange. At that point, the computer will see the tablet as if it were a drive. Put your ebooks in the "my documents" folder of the nook directory. The Galaxy does not have an SD card slot (boo!)

For B&N purchased material, sign into your B&N account and after about a minute all the books you have purchased there will appear with a download button.

Sometimes book has a download button but when you try to download it says it is a preorder even though it has been released. DO NOT sign out and sign back in (B&N help will tell you to do that but DON'T) Just uninstall the application and reinstall and when you sign back in all your downloaded books will still be there and you will be able to download the book that is being difficult.

Wow! Thank you for that.

I've got the Galaxy 7 plus, which does have a microsd slot. Putting the books and the music on a microsd card was going to be my fall-back position. Mostly 'cause I don't have an extra sitting around and would have to order one in.

This morning I find that the music is on the device, and that the various music programs can find and play it just fine. One for the good guys.

The Nook app for whatever reason still persists in seeing only the books I've purchased from BN and none of the books that I can plainly see in the "my documents" folder in the Nook directory. Ebook can see them and opens them just fine. So, I guess my bet there is to either use Ebook to read or find another, more compliant ebook reader to read my non-BN-purchased books on.

On my Android phone, I use an app called Aldiko to read eBooks. I'm unsure which tablets it is available for but the it seems likely the Galaxy Tab would be supported. I use the free version and love it. If you don't see it in the Market on your tablet, you might try downloading it from the website.

And this might also be useful if you do try it out:

You might try uninstalling and reinstalling the Nook software (which should leave the books intact.)

Faint, well-aged memories suggested "the circus of Dr. Lao" but IMDB insists it is called "7 Faces of Dr. Lao." Tony Bennett, Barbara Eden... I'm not sure how well it will fit, but it might be worth trying.

I think "The Circus of Dr. Lao" is the name of the book it was based on?

Movies?

Actually the list of movies you liked are so varied that I can't give any suggestions. I can only say what I have seen recently and liked. I unfortunately missed Tin Tin because I'm not supposed to be walking right now due to the terrible knee. But....I snuck out to see Warhorse which I loved...parts are hard to watch but I made sure it had a happy ending before I went to see it. It was worth my knee feeling sore for two days afterwards. I loved UP as well. So good. I just watched Sarah's Key which I think would be available on Netflix which I would highly recommend. Also loved ....what was it called?.... the Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon which is based on The Adjustment Team, a short story by Phillip K. Dick which has been out for a while now so would be on Netflix as well.

I didn't like It's Complicated. I did like The Kids are All Right.
I love the movies. I'm sad to have missed Tin Tin. I hope it appears where I can see it soon.

I hope you can figure out the new tablet. You're awesome experts will have the answers I'm sure. I'm sure that Mozart is assisting the best that he can.

Still putting off buying a Kindle. It's too expensive to download I think. So still asking for your short stories to be on paper someday. Awaiting new developments in the Splinter Universe.

News of the con seem like a lot of fun. I'll look forward to hearing about it...

Sorry for the dreadful typo in my previous posting. I probably should do the spell check preview each time but am usually in a hurry.

How about TV?

Since you listed Pride and Prejudice, check out PBS' Downton Abby Seasons 1 and 2. Season 2 is just being released. Hopelessly addicting. :)
