I'm sorry, folks.  It was OK for a couple of weeks, but the viagra and handbag spam are back -- this time in Russian. I can't keep up with shutting them down, so -- Anonymous commenting is going to be turned off as soon as I hit "Post" on this message.

If you want to comment here, you'll need to get a free LJ account, or a Facebook account, or a Google Circles account or a...Merchant ID? account?  A discussion of the various non-anonymous methods of posting here would be welcome, since I'm clearly not informed.

I understand that many regular anonymous posters have strong feelings about not signing up for this or that or the other thing, and I have tried to accomodate that, but at this point -- no can do.

Thank you for your understanding.

I suspect you may be thinking of OpenID - see the Wikipedia article. Dreamwidth is an OpenID source, Wikipedia also lists Google, Yahoo!, PayPal, BBC, AOL, MySpace, IBM, Steam, Sherdog, Orange and VeriSign.

IIRC, one of my friends set up his home server to handle OpenID requests. I may have to check sometime to see how impossible it is.

OpenID

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking of! Thank you.

I got 4 anonymous comments of spam yesterday, and that was enough for me to turn off anonymous posting. Not that it matters since I don't get a lot of comments anyway, but 4 spams in one day is a record for me. Sheesh.

My comments are set to friends-only; that is to say, people who are friended by my account get a free pass. Other LJ registered folk go into a screening bin and I unscreen the comment if it is relevant and non-offensive (this saved my bacon a couple of times because the comment in the screen bin, albeit with a LJ handle, came fully equipped with a rather eye-watering close-up of female genitalia - which I don't particularly want plastered all over my blog, thankyouverymuchindeed.) Anonymouse posting in commentary has been turned off for a VERY long time here - not so much because of direct spam (although it helps there) but because I seem to attract a particular KIND of nasty because of my background and ethnicity. I have no truck with that. If anyone wants to spew their poison they can do it in places that are NOT my own "cyber-house".

Sorry, but them's the breaks. It isn't as though people are breaking down the doors to comment here - I don't get a Scalziesque comment load in any event, and this minor policing makes it manageable, for me.

While speaking of dark things - I was slow to discover your new story, I've read it just now - it is alarming, how bitter and vivid are your descriptions of Eylot's politics. If I may ask - is there some background to the Eylot setting that we ought to be aware of?

As Kara put it - forgive me that I notice your distress etc. It's probably only my imagination, anyway.

Well, you see. . .I'm a writer. If you're alarmed by Eylot's politics, then I've done my job correctly.

Well, I am a bit old to run onto a theater stage to save Julliette, so it's too much to say that I am alarmed _by_ Eylot's politics (all honor to your depiction of it). What I am more alarmed of, is that when speaking of Eylot, you might have in mind something much closer to home...

You wrote about failing societies before, but the attitude was never quite so dire. The one in Fledgling you made to look almost comical. This time, it seems to me, you are coming with a message to the real world. I am just not sure, which part of the real world made you think about Eylot.

Blame the thieves and parasites for ruining a good thing. It's hardly your fault that your journal (among countless others) is being hammered with spam.

I hear you about the anonymous posting. I was getting spam in Chinese. I can sort of puzzle out Russian, but I draw the line at Chinese. I also seemed to be getting a lot of Spanish spam. ???
When you get down to Eylotian style prejudices and politics . . .erm,. . . Liaden is not exactly prejudice free itself, with their extreme reaction to Anne's book and the ideas it puts forth, and the Anti-Terran bunch, etc., etc. I hope there's a comeuppance forthcoming for that lot.
BTW, I like the blog theme redo. Any plans for more "Tree and Dragon" symbol tees?
