My grandmother was a Baltimorean and she spoke Baltimorese. Therefore, the thing that Socks is gracing with his presence was, indeed, an african, of which she crocheted many in her life. She also washed her dishes in a zinc, and sat her guests down for a spell on the teet.
(A "teet" is a sofa/couch, possibly a mispronunciation/smash-up of tete-a-tete, which was a kind of sofa/couch.)
