We have now reached the Point in the Proceedings where I'm avoiding packing.  I've gotten all my devices together, and their various cords, and have put the files I'll need onto Number Ten Ox, but as for packing clothes -- nuh-uh.  Don't wanna.  As a matter of fact, I'm for scrubbing the whole trip, if it means packing clothes. Who thought this was a good idea, anyway?

Oh, wait.

I did.

Well.  I'm sure it'll be fine.  Even fun.  Once I get past the packing stage.

Did I mention that I hate packing?

Argh.

*flails*

While I'm in avoidance mode, I'll just mention that two of my colleagues have books out today.

Allegiance, by Beth Bernobich, is new from Tor.  Read all about it here.

And!

Janni Lee Simner is re-releasing Tierney West, Professional Adventurer (previously published as The Secret of the Three Treasurers), with a whole new look.  Check it out here.

Also!

Cats are good for you. No, really.

*wonders if she can sneak Trooper into her luggage*.  That would solve the whole packing clothes thing, anyway.

OK, I can do this.  I just need a plan.  Jeans.  Jeans and turtlenecks -- that's a plan, right?

Condolences on the packing thing. I love road trips, but I hate packing for them.

(It was worse when we had the offspring in residence, in the years before they attained the ability to pack for themselves. As they grew, they developed their own distinctive packing styles -- one of them traveled with enough different outfits to rival Elizabeth I on progress, while another would fill a bag of similar size with an extensive collection of video games and a couple of changes of underwear.)

Seems to me that the weather always decides to change about the time I'm going on a trip, just to make it even harder to decide what I'm going to feel like wearing. Fortunately, the trip to Mom's is only 3 hours by car and she doesn't think I'm weird if I show up with 6 days worth of clothes for 3 days.

You could always ask the fans along the way to provide clothing. I suspect it would be an interesting way to avoid packing.

Incidentally, I have had one trip where my suitcase vanished in transit. I learned that I could indeed buy a reasonable outfit to stand up and give a presentation on a Sunday in a European city where I did not speak the language, and it didn't even cost all that much. Fortunately my suitcase reappeared the next day, so I did not have to continue to purchase a new wardrobe. But it did suggest an alternative to packing -- just buy a new outfit as you go!

Now, which of these alternatives would you prefer to try? Fan outfits, buy as you go, or... packing?

Many years ago, we went out to Silicon Valley for a convention, but our luggage. . .didn't. So, we got in a taxi cab and went to Kmart on Thanksgiving Day -- which I don't recommend -- and bought clothes. Jeans and turtlenecks, if memory serves, so at least I'm consistent.

How odd. Veronica Roth's Allegiant came out on the 22nd, and that was one of the books I was waiting for. Her three are very good.

Jeans and turtlenecks -- that's a plan, right

Worked for Steve Jobs for years ... seems like a solid plan.

Though I myself cannot stand turtlenecks and would feel like I was strangling all day, but that's just me.

I, too hate packing, and frequently travel in a manner that requires vast variety (we do cruises). The best plan I ever came up with is to count the number of outfits I will need, and the first thing I do is get the underwear together. Then the shoes and socks/stockings. then pare down the shoes.
maybe the next day, I hang up favorite outfits along the top of the bed canopy (very handy)Then I eliminate the ones that don't get along with anything else in the trips color scheme. -I dont choose a color scheme, they just happen.
then I take a deep breath, and shove it all into place, add the requisite hair clips, teethbrushes, make up, and medicines. All done.
