1.  Many thanks to everyone who donated to Liaden Universe® story, "The Rifle's First Wife," and to Splinter Universe.  Here's the link, for those who haven't read the story, yet.  And here's the link to a discussion of our plans for the site.  Both pieces may be read for free; donations are appreciated, not mandatory.

2.  Speaking of reading for free, "The Gift of Music," set in Archers Beach, Maine, is available at Baen.com.  Go here and scroll down.  Scrolling down is key.

3.  In answer to the several. . .concerned emails asking whether or not we're working on the next Liaden book -- yes.  Yes, we are.

4.  The electronic edition of Carousel Sun, the sequel to Carousel Tides, is now available directly from Baen and from your favorite ebook vendor.  The trade paperback won't be released by Amazon or BN until February 4, but!  Uncle Hugo's has signed copies available right now.  Here's your link.

5.  It's a bright and sunshine-y 1F/-17C outside at the moment, and I need to go into town.  Everybody stay warm.

Stay warm yourself! No one would like you becoming a headline: 'Famous writer freezes solid while on trip to town'!

I wanted to pass on this entry from my blog:

“This troop, this Line yos’Phelium, Clan Korval,” Nelerikk Explorer had explained early in his relationship with the house, “is a troop of victors. It functions well by following orders and commands, as any well-organized troop may be expected to function, but it is victorious because it assumes and it demands that all troops are capable of making decisions. Personal initiative is not only expected, it is required. From the very oldest to the very youngest, all are expected to exceed norms, to excel at their own assigned duties as well as at duties or arts they choose themselves. Culture, arts, science, skills of joy or skills of survival, it is not expected that any one owing allegiance here should be backward in the pursuit of accomplishment. One must study what is at hand, and seek to improve the lives of all.”

This is a quote from The Rifle’s First Wife by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, available for free (or a donation) at http://splinteruniverse.com/?page_id=673.

(Is that a sufficient citation to make it legal for me to cut-and-paste a paragraph? All honor and respect to the authors is intended!)

What an excellent description of what makes some communities (families? groups?) different, better, bigger, stronger, more... worthy? than others. Wow.
It's a concept I've tried, and failed, to explain to others.
I have not succeeded in fully instilling it in my kids. They are disturbingly content, at times, to do just what is ordered. But then, so is their father, so they were taught both... views? perspectives? values? expectations? skills? I acknowledge sliding into it at times when I'm tired. But I will NOT live in it, will not choose to be mediocre.

These strivers are the people with whom I want to work, live, and have fun.
We recognize each other, don't we?
I believe my LJ community has a higher proportion of such people than any other place I live.
Thank you for being there and reminding me it is possible to live in such a community. Even if only virtually.

Wow! Thank you!

And, yes, you're fine on both attribution and Fair Use.

Can you let me know how you couldn't send a message? If one of our email addresses (or links thereto) is broken, we'd like to fix it.

I tried to send a message through LJ, since I was already here. It told me I did not have permission. Posting a reply, and giving the lovely story a little bump, was a simple alternative. Email would have been next, if the matter warranted the escalation.
Thank you for the joy your writing and, increasingly, your blogging bring into my life.

Actually, I appreciated being able to see your comments, which I would have missed if you had just sent them via a message to Rolanni. Thank you for sharing your feelings.
