In which the new car achieves a name

Let it be known that the New Blue Car shall hereafter be known as "Kineo," in honor of the mountain* we did not visit yesterday, but could have, had we been willing to drive another two hours northeast of Greenville on roads which are, um, occasionally unkempt to make our bows, thereby making a pleasant four-hour round trip into a dicey six hours of driving.

Also, Steve reminds me that I was remiss in my reporting of yesterday's outing. In fact, there was a moose in the Greenville town salt bank, as there has been every. single. time. we've gone to Greenville.  Yesterday, there was just one.  The last time, there were three -- mom and two kids.

On the way home, a vulture -- and now I wonder if Mainers call them "vultures" or something else, the subject never having come up before -- in any case, a vulture, I say, flew straight down the road at us, swerving to its right at the last moment, to settle into what few branches remained in a very messy wood yard, where three other vultures were already ensconced.  No, we did not stop the car to see what was so fascinating.

In other news. . .well, there isn't any other news, really. Today is a less-windy repeat of yesterday, pleasantly warm, with alternating sun and clouds. Tomorrow and Sunday, the weatherbeans say, it's going to rain like a sonofagun, to which I selfishly say, "Good," because I have a lot of work to do.

*Yes, yes; I hear you laughing over there in Montana, and Colorado, and Oregon, and France, and Switzerland, and all those other places with real mountains.  For the purposes of the East Coast of the United States, Mount Kineo passes for a mountain.  Not only that, it's the only mountain in the world made entirely of arrowheads.  Also known as hornstone.  Here, have a wikipedia article.

Very glad to have news of Maine wildlife. Here we have vultures but we also have California Condors which is a very big kind of vulture which they are slowly calling back from the grave with captive breeding programs and now some flying free near the Grand Canyon.

I'd love to know what a salt bank is.

Mountains. UT is all high. Up on the Colorado plateau about 5,000 feet.
Then there are mountains on top of that. When they show photos of Salt Lake City the mountains are all around.

I am not there though. I'm down on the AZ border some 6 hours of driving south. No mountains here. Just red rock mesas and bluffs.

I still remember having a mountain in Ireland pointed out to me, and I asked if it was hidden in the mists, because all I could see were the foothills.. sigh. they also have a river or two that looks like a small stream...

My grandfather used to refer to buzzards, but I'm not sure if he actually meant vultures.

He had a cabin on Moose River, straight down from Kineo, which was front-row center in the living-room window. If we were feeling ambitious, we would take the boat and go down to the lake and have a picnic on the other side of the mountain, where there was a beach consisting entirely of water-polished, rounded pebbles of all colors.

It's spectacular close up--rears straight up out of the lake. It was the horizon of a fair bit of my childhood.

So now I live in the shadow of another mountain, and it feels just right.

We here in the North are celebrating a mouldy 19th Century Queen this weekend, for which she has graciously given us Monday off.

On Buzzards

Down here in CT Yankee land, my family called 'em buzzards. Do you know they migrate? I spent a winter in FL and the trees were full of buzzards, like 50 - 100 per tree. It kept the senior citizens moving. Which leads to joke about the buzzard who was too old and tired to fly south for the winter and decided to take Delta. Upon arrival at the airport, he was asked if he had any bags to check, to which he replied, "No, I only have carrion." (Sorry about that)
