nominations and other things

Wow! You are both very busy. Can't wait to see the results.
I saw an article in the SF Chronicle this morning about the copyright issue you have been writing about and thought you might find it interesting. Just realized I have the actual paper copy in hand and was going to type in the http: address. I prefer paper, but my brain made an assumption that of course the http address would be there as well. Author is Meredith May, title: Academics arguing for changes in copyright regulations.
From reading your blogs I think they seem to have lost sight of the idea of authors owning their own work, and the emphasis on finding original authors, not making the authors find them. K

Thanks, I'll look it up.

The problem with academics and publishing is that academics very often give their writing away, either to the university that they work for, or to the press that ultimately publishes their work. So, to them, copyright really is a useless impediment. And they simply won't listen to those of us who actually make our living from our copyrights. I don't know if it's because we're largely writing genre so we must all be idiots, or because what's done in academia is by definition More Important than what's done elsewhere, or because academics have the right to everything, whether it belongs to them or not, or...

I've long thought that we ought to call academic publishing and real world publishing by two different names, because they really are two different things.

Thanks for the clarification. It just didn't make sense to me. Academics do get money for their published books so they should at least have that connection. Sigh. I used to teach a class about copyright infringement, and the hardest part was getting the students to understand that those who copy discs, or don't credit work legally, are taking money out of the author's hands. No money, no food, no more writing or creating. I hope I got through to a few of them anyway. Now to get the lawyers and judges to understand.

We travel days, so you don't have to travel hours!

We do sorta get out Detroit way from time to time. Though last time was 2007, so I guess it has been a while.
