So! Twenty percent of the Penultimate Manuscript is now Ultimate Manuscript!  Hoping to do much better today.

In other news, the Coon Cats predict that!  Winter is Coming.  You heard it here, first.

Spent some of this morning trying to find out from Nook why the payment for June sales has yet to arrive in our checking account.  It should have arrived on Sunday night, but Nook is always taken by surprise by the sudden -- and, indeed, unannounced -- appearance of Bank Holidays, so I figured it would show up on Tuesday...or Wednesday...or certainly by Thursday.

But, no.

And, it turns out that the folks on Nook Support Live Chat can only cut'n'paste from the FAQ, which I can -- and did -- read for myself, thanks.  They can't tell me if June payments have been disbursed, that question has to be bumped upstairs to some Top Secret Office which answers its mail in three days, honest.

I dunno.  Most places where I've had day-jobs, if it suddenly came to the attention of the Accounting Department that a Bank Holiday has hoved and/or hoven outta the mist, they cut paychecks the day before the holiday.  You'd figure that Nook's Accounting Department might be that smart, but maybe I'm naive.

Today is bright and breezy, and supposed eventually to get warmish, but right now....*kisses her fingertips*

And!  I'm for the couch, and the other 80% of the manuscript.

What're you doing today that's fun?

Fun? Pruning dead limbs out of the back yard spruces is fun?

I went to Burning Man for two weeks. And now I have a large pile of camping gear on the front steps covered with grey alkaline clay dust that needs to be washed off. So that means erect the tents, repair the poles that got splintered in the wind, hose them off inside and out, dry thoroughly, and pack back up. That's just the tents, then the ground clothes, shade clothes, chairs, tables, storage bins, coolers, solar lights, etc, etc, all need to be cleaned too. So far I've done 6 loads of laundry and 4 loads of dishes in the last two days.

No kidding. It's the sort of regularly occurring phenomenon that advertent organizations have Procedures In Place for.

I noticed during my time as a free-lance consultant that companies whose financial situation was lean tended to stretch out all their payments as far as possible and were never very forthcoming as to why 30 day payments weren't going to be made until 120 days. Rather frustrating and not conducive to doing further work for those entities.

All entities are stretching payments

The accounting folks are actually clever and advertent. In the 'good old' days, companies would cut paychecks the day before the holiday, knowing they had 'float,' and the checks would not reach their bank until after the holiday. Even when they had the funds to cover the checks, they could get several days of interest on those funds. Today, with Electronic Transfer of Funds, the money is out of their accounts almost before they hit 'send.' My federal retirement 'checks,' which are due on the first and used to be issued on the Friday before if the first was on a weekend or Monday holiday, are now issued the first bank day AFTER, which can mean the fourth, if the first is a Saturday of a three-day weekend. However, the automatic withdrawals which depend on that money being in my account are made during the weekends and on holidays just the same.

Agreed. Excellent explanation, too. I clearly remember having to play the float at one point in my life to keep bills current. Can't do that anymore.

I am most definitely having fun. Am about a third of the way through my yellowstone vacation, and fighting bad hotel wireless to figure out if anything is happening in the rest of the world, and incidentally letting the rest of the world know I'm still alive, and have not been eaten by bear, nor been in a bison vehicle collision. Yes. The Coon Cats are correct. In Maine winter is coming. They sound like old George R.R. Martin...But here in sunny UT winter is not coming. It won't be arriving probably until around the first of Nov. It is now monsoon season when it actually rains. yay!

I went back and read what you said about Robin William's suicide. Most people don't know how difficult it is to stop drinking when one has a drinking problem..He did that. He was sober at the time of his death. It was the diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease that finally got him. Too bad.

Good description of Val Con as the fan said in Agent of Change. I think we know less about what Miri looked like except that she is a very tiny person.

After thinking about descriptions, I think the most useful for the illustrator are the most general - Miri's size and hair color/braid, and things like common clothing colors. I wish I had time to go back through the books for examples, but I seem to have too many balls in the air at the moment ;/
