The proofs for Carousel Seas, the Thrilling Conclusion to the Archers Beach Carousel Trilogy by Sharon Lee, that started with Carousel Tides, and continued in Carousel Sun, just landed in my inbox!

What this means to you -- yes, you! -- is that the eARC of this long-awaited novel should be available for purchase on the Baen site realsoonnow.

You know what to do, I think?

Splendid.

I'll be over here, finishing a short story.

Hi, according to Baen 1/2 the ebook will be available on Wed. For your work I will even buy a half book. Rest is due in December.

The half-book is something completely different, which I Freely Admit not to understand. Baen does many things which are peculiar to itself, including pre-selling books in "bundles." The half-book is a bundle thing, and I'm not even sure if you can buy the January bundle anymore.

The eARC is the completed book and matches exactly the authors proofs which I now have sitting on my desk. What it doesn't have are the corrections that I'll be making in the proofs so that the final book will be as error-free as possible. Which leads one to wonder how that half-book is going to play, but honestly? That's Someone Else's Problem.

I probably haven't made things clearer.

Hmmm.

This is the link at which the eARC should manifest: http://www.baenebooks.com/?__utma=222178315.1035680871.1397925075.1413216242.1413221386.268&__utmb=222178315.1.10.1413221386&__utmc=222178315&__utmx=-&__utmz=222178315.1408123147.155.3.utmcsr=google|utmccn=%28organic%29|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=%28not%20provided%29&__utmv=-&__utmk=177251110

in a reasonable universe, just over top of the now-toppest eARC for Strands of Sorrow.

You can't buy the half book separately anyway; the bundles come with some books (the already-published ones coming out in paperback or for reissue or whatever) available immediately and others (the ones for which this is first publication) available in a vaguely serial-esque fashion with the first half being available two months in advance and the first three-quarters being available a month in advance.

Personally, I think the half-books function mostly as teasers for the e-arcs. Certainly I've bought more than one e-arc after buying the monthly bundle and reading in advance and being unwilling to stop.

There is also an eARC announcement forum on the Baen Bar where all eARCs are announced (and no other activity) that one can subscribe to. Hopefully, we'll be seeing an eARC in the next few hours?

The half-a-book scheme preceded the invention of eARCs. It used to be called Webscriptions, and was targeted both at bargain-hunters - you got all of Baen's offerings of the month for a low bundle price - and earlybirds - two serial installments would come three and two months before official Book Day, with the final proofed version, in all formats, available a couple of weeks before stores had it.

The eARC was a later development, when it was found that there was a substantial market for getting the entire book NOW, never mind if it has typos or costs more. NOW!

OK, I am on the look out at the e-ARC site on Baen. I checked it out yesterday, and then went to the "Sharon Lee" connection which had the 1/2 book information as of yesterday and this morning. It didn't seem to be in a bundle, but it doesn't really matter except that of course I'd like to start reading the new book as soon as possible. No worries. Always something new to learn!
