You say you were so tempted to edit the chapter... are there any issues with incomplete novel that change the (now) established history on the Liaden universe? Will you be tempted to 'correct' any historical errors, or just leave as in splinters.
There's nothing in the partial that couldn't have happened, given that Shan and Priscilla begin to form their team prior to Val Con being recruited by the DOI (a fact which is sometimes obscured by publication order). Conflict of Honors precedes Agent (given that Val Con is home on leave from the Scouts, and wandering about going to parties), and Shan and Priscilla Ride Again would slot between them.
One of our very few Writing Rules, besides "have fun" is: A novel has precedence over a short story.
We do our best to rectify the action in a novel with a previously published short story, but if we can't, it is the short story which has to give way. The most famous Liadenverse example of this principal is "Lord of the Dance." The events in Ghost Ship make it impossible for Daav to attend (have attended?) that amusement, and try as we might, we couldn't bring the two stories into balance. OTOH, we did manage to bring "Prodigal Son" into line with Ghost Ship's narrative, so we're not completely hopeless. :)
This is one of the principal reasons that we resist the effort to lock things down into hard-date timelines and maps and the like. I, at least, want wiggle-room, and apparently I have a much fluid idea of "story" than some folks.
Thanks - looking forward to the next chapters. History is all approximate anyway - the story teller is allowed to get a few dates slightly out or not remember everything exactly right...
