What in ghod's name am I doing up at this hour?

Oh. Right. Gotta be on the phones RSN. Coffee is definitely in order.

It rained yesterday and most of the snow is gone, dernit. I really had hoped that we had the base cover for the winter now.

Matters at the cousin's place of business are heating up considerably, and I'm starting to get tired of saying my own name. 'nother three days this week, then two whole days off in a row. I can do this.

Fledgling is now funded almost to the end of Chapter Seven. That's just...amazing.

Hope everyone's Rush Toward Potlach is going smoothly and that y'all are getting enough sleep.

...coffee...

If you're tired of saying your own name, use some others. Rhonda, Antoine, Tiffany . . . you can use Mike too if you like. Or perhaps something on the extravagant side? Madam La Bouffant? Gold Bullion?

Go ahead, philander a bit. (Hum, I don't think that's exactly the right word - a lightning bug instead of lightning. Although fond of men seems almost right :-)

Oh, go look up the great discussion of names in Panshin's - Star Well or Masque World. Then feel free to use the right name.

So here is a question. At what point are you guys going to STOP writing Fledgling? Do you have a set point in mind? At the rate people are going you could be looking at 10-15 chapters being paid for. What happens if the story ends for you before the chapters paid for do? Something to think about.

I was wondering myself if the authors are planning to keep taking donations after the entire story has been paid for (I don't see why they shouldn't, as long as they're straightforward about it).

I was going to donate $25 as soon as the first chapter was up, but decided to go ahead and do it now, since everyone else seems to be doing so.

I just sent them a check for $25, which will (if I'm not beaten to it by someone's PayPal) put them over the top for Chapter Seven.

I don't really care if they're "over-paid" for the book - it's a new Liaden novel! Yay!

Note:

Local Custom -- 40 chapters
Scout's Progress -- 39 chapters
Agent of Change -- 27 chapters
Crystal Soldier -- 31 chapters
Crystal Dragon -- 37 chapters
Plan B -- 35 chapters
The Tomorrow Log -- 70 chapters
Sword of Orion (our shortest book by about 20,000 words) 24 chapters plus a prologue ...

if anyone wants to count the chapters without numbers in the other books, please feel free... but our books and characters tend to set their own story rhythm. I'd guess 35-40 chapters to be a fair number... but that's a guess without seeing how the words want to fall this time around.

Didn't think it was going to be a huge issue, but I thought it was worth the question.

Maybe the authors will go on until the novel is as long s Shogun. Then they'll be able to acquire Kroval Manor in Old Orchard Beach.

Madame La Bouffant?

[identity profile] mbarker.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Would you prefer Madame Le Bouffant? No, no, that would be the wrong thing, I'm sure. And it sounds . . . Just imagine. You dial up the Beans, and a mellow voice answers, "Yes, this is Madame La Bouffant speaking. How may I help you today?"

Ah, it does need another something. Madame La Bouffant de la mer?

What the heck, might as well have fun with a name. Want to bet that most of the shoppers would never notice it?

[identity profile] serge-lj.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I wasn't questionning whether it should be 'LA Bouffant' or 'LE Bouffant'... It's just that, when I think of Rolanni adopting a nom-de-guerre other than the name of her birth, nothing comes up in my mind that has 'bouffant' in it.

[identity profile] mbarker.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, most certainly. But what about a nom-de-frivolity? A mere masque of a name, a momentary mnemonic of convenience for expediting the passing of Beans' finest produce? Perhaps something more prosaic would be better, at that. Very well, how about Ferdinand (in memory of the bull, of course)?

[identity profile] serge-lj.livejournal.com 2006-12-14 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
A nom-de-frivolity... Now you've got me trying to picture Rolanni as Marie-Antoinette. Ouch. My brain hurts.

Go On....

Take the money and run.

The other Steve Miller has it right, eh?

I definitely think that the story should be whatever the authors feel is the right length to fulfil the original plan; that is, to flesh-out the blank between I DARE and the next big thing. Whatever money can be made at that proposition , rightfully belongs to the authors, regardless of how much that may turn out to be. Feel free to keep it all, as long as we get the goods. After-all, if we had to wait for it in printed form, wouldn't we spend $25.00 or MORE per each? I know I would!

I can do this.

How many times have we had to say this in our lives? Mama didn't tell me how difficult life could be at times. But...I can do this.

How would Tiffany be? I use Dolly Parton for these hearts and clovers you sign in stores and put in a contribution to something.

I'll try again to put something in to Fledgling, last time it wouldn't believe I'd put everything in, to take my money.
