Doctor's appointment today. Somehow, November became Doctor Month this year. Was given meds which may address the rotten sleep thing I've gotten into lately. It would be Nice if it did. Left, feeling low, and trudged over to the lab building to visit the vampires per orders of the first doctor of the month. For some reason, I had thought they were only going to bleed me of one vial, but, no -- they drew the full three. Left the lab feeling Even Lower, a condition exacerbated by the fact that the sticky note on which the doctor had written some names and whatnot for me had vanished somewhere between here and there. Searched pockets, pocketbook, book -- no joy. The damn' thing fell through a hole between the universes. I hate that.

Returned home, feeling low (do we see a pattern here?) to find that circumstances had conspired to delay [livejournal.com profile] kinzel's departure to the capital city of Augusta. I was feeling lousy enough by this time not to want to be left with only me for company, and invited myself along, spending most of the ride to and from staring moodily out the window, which my partner bore with good humor.

Since I was in a rotten mood anyway, I spent this afternoon filing and straightening up some of the Writing Mess so that I can begin to accrete more mess tomorrow.

I am, for the record, tired, cold, edgy, and irritable. I really, really want a good night's sleep. OK, five or six good nights' sleep. This doesn't seem like too much to ask, in the large scheme of things.

Have you tried taking melatonin for the sleep thing? I've been taking it since May and it makes an amazing difference. Mind you, I only take half a tablet--if I take more I start getting headaches and can't wake up in the morning. But I've gone from waking up six or seven times in the night to sleeping the night through, which makes a wonderful difference in my energy levels the next day.

No, I haven't. And it's one of the reasons losing that note irritated me so much. One of the names was of the local "alternative" practitioner, who was reported to know from melatonin, of which the usual doctor was honest enough to report herself uninformed. I'll need to call tomorrow when the office is open and ask for the name again.

I hope you feel more rested soon. I've been known to take valerian root when I can't sleep. But my insomnia is usually stress related, and valerian is great for that. You can get it at your local Trader Joe's or health food store.

Hey - don't forget to talk to the pharmacist to make sure you dont have any interactions with something else you are taking. I know as we all get older we start to have the little bowl of pills for breakfast get bigger and bigger.

Can you say boonies? Nearest Trader Joe's is two states away. I thought there was one in NH, but it turns out that the one listed under NH is actually across the border in Mass. So Boston is the nearest TJ we actually know how to get t0... sigh, and woe.

Ah. I do understand. It wasn't too long ago that our nearest TJ's was in Southern California.

November is Doctor month for me too!

Two dentist visits - one to fill cavities, one for reconstructive work on front teeth
One eye-doctor visit - full dilation for the annual 'look at the back of my eye because I'm diabetic' and anesthetize the eyeball for the glaucoma test!
One primary physician visit - bunch of little stuff, including getting an OK for a prescription refill (reminds me - I need to make up my list of stuff to talk about)
One oncologist visit - follow-up for the leukemia treatment

I need to make up my list of stuff to talk about

I find that making a list over a couple days while I'm relaxed is a good idea, rather than trying to think of everything on the fly in the doctor's office. One doctor (I was his patient Very Briefly) told me that only women made lists, and seemed somewhere between bemused and bored by the habit. So fine, I found a woman doctor. Sure enough, the first time I went in for a check-up, she said, "Oh, you brought a list! Wonderful!"

And you remind me -- I haven't made an appointment with the eye doctor, which I should. It's been a year and there's no good way for me to tell if my vision's blurry because I'm asleep on my feet, or if the prescription needs tweaking...

I would have found a different doctor too!

Actually, I've got the list - I just need to transcribe it. Otherwise, I'll forget something from it when I go in Thursday!

$553.86 on new glasses last night - progressive lenses for both of us! And probably another $400 or so for prescription sunglasses in a couple of weeks - we've got a significant amount of 'use-it-or-loose-it' money in the medical cafeteria account.

Sympathies.

"To sleep, perhaps to dream..." I'd settle for decent sleep--long trip tomorrow.

I won't repeat others' good suggestions, other than to reiterate that herbs can be as powerful as meds, so be careful about interaction.

And to say that the B vitamin group can help sleep a lot, especially B6. Ask the ND about it--

October was bad health month. November is poor, rotten health month...
