Got a few words on George today; slow going while I try to coax a character to tell me who he is.

This would be easier if he knew, himself.

Progress on The Book Presently Known as George:
4,092 words/100,000 OR 4.09% complete

Does he have some lesson he's going to try to learn by the end? If so, in what ways does his present cluelessness affect his behavior?

Wow, I'd never get anywhere if I went at it like that :)

As it happens, I know who he is, in broad stroke, what he's doing in the story, and his part in solving the problem of the narrative. But! That's a whole different kettle of fish from who he thinks he is, and since he's a viewpoint, that Matters.

Who?

Mystery. Suspense. Is he perhaps in disguise? Val Con appeared to us for the first time in disguise. Or he could have some mental problems? Does he think he is Napoleon? That would be very unfortunate. Or could he suffer from amnesia? Could he really be a girl and not a boy? That happens a lot in Shakespeare's plays. I hope he's not a crook like that dreadful man handing out fake business cards in "Balance of Trade". Well, I guess we'll just have to wait to find out.

My theory for why the story is named "George":

Post-cliffhanger (non-sequitur)

I just re-read my Liaden novels this past week. I don't have them all, and I read in order of events from Conflict of Honors through Plan B. I've been poking around on Amazon.com, and from what it tells me there is so far nothing written past the cliffhanger at the end of Plan B. Parallel storylines end around the same time, and there are quite a few prequels, but nothing after from what I've found.

My first Liaden book was Agent of Change when it first came out, so I've followed the Val Con storyline with occasional divergences to Shan's, and that's what I want more of. Is there more? Did I miss something in the morass of Amazon links? I may not be your target audience, because I generally enjoy following one set of characters through a (mostly) chronological series of events, and additional books that follow different characters interest me quite a bit less. So I wait for more Val Con and Miri.

Damn, can't edit comments after posting. I meant "Conflict of Honors through I Dare" and cliffhanger in I Dare. Late-night brain fart. Sorry.

I'm guessing you have read Fledgling and Saltation? That's the story of Theo, that ends right at the same cliffhanger as I Dare (although from a different point of view). Next is Ghost Ship, which is in the hands of Baen, and I think will be coming out middle of next year.

Um... have you read the short stories? Over here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liaden there's a pretty good description of them.

Incidentally, Carousel Tides is out right now. While it isn't quite the same, it is good reading.

I second the suggestion that you investigate the short stories, if you haven't already. They're available (or most of them are) electronically from Baen and I think most are still available in hard copy from SRM Publisher. Several deal with ValCon & Miri, together or separately. Some are from their early days, prior to Agent of Change, and at least one or two are set on Surebleak. They fill in around the books quite nicely.

Ah, just remembered. You might want to order a copy of Skyblaze, a new chapbook coming in February 2011. Over here http://www.korval.com/skyblaze/

If I understand this correctly, the request is for a return to a Val Con and Miri specific storyline.

. . .as best as I can tell right now, that's not going to happen. Val Con and Miri will certainly appear in future stories -- they're the delm, after all, and the clan has some Interesting Times ahead of it.

There may be a future book that is mostly Val Con and Miri, but I don't see them carrying book after book like they did in the Agent of Change sequence (Agent of Change, Conflict of Honors, Carpe Diem, Plan B, I Dare -- one story spanning five books). The work of that set of stories included reuniting Val Con with his clan, moving the clan out of a stagnant and increasingly dangerous situation, and setting up for the next batch of problems, so that other characters can come on stage.

We're under contract for three more Liaden Universe(R) novels -- Dragon Ship (sequel to Ghost Ship, due out in August, which is the direct sequel to I Dare); Trade Secret (sequel to Balance of Trade); and George, which kind of fits into a pocket of Ghost Ship and mostly follows characters we've never seen before.
