This, for the same reason. I also find that Shan and Priscilla are two of my favourite characters in your books. Local Custom is probably my second favourite. I love Er Thom.
I voted Mouse and Dragon because I loved the empowerment story, but Agent of Change as an action novel, and Fledgling as a coming-of-age novel, are just as good.
Everything about Balance of Trade just works for me -- Jethry's growth from a kid off a trade ship into a man of the galaxy is facinating, and every single character is strong and interesting.
Why would you make us choose one? If I had to choose, I suppose it would be Conflict of Honors because, like someone else said, it introduced me to the Liaden Universe. However, I have a great fondness for Saltation because of the necklace (don't ask me why, but it seemed like a wonderful little magical charm and I was enchanted with it).
I picked for Scout's Progress because that's how I feel today, but tomorrow I might feel differently. Because yes, how can you ask us to choose??? There are no bad ones.
I don't have a favorite: you insist upon telling stories about people whom one comes to care about, and I cannot think of any of the Liaden novels which I prefer over the others.
The tight plotting, the Turtles, the fast pace - I love all the books, but this is still the favorite. My second favorite is Plan B. Everyone is in it - and WOW the cool plots that combine in that one. Saltation is my favorite of the recent books. Again, when long plot lines come back in its very exciting.
Agent of Change.. It was the book that stated me down the garden path to tree and dragon. Now I'm hooked and will have to pay exorbitant amounts to acquire all of the books..but then my name is Lee and I am a Bookaholic
I'm not entirely sure why Pat Rin appeals, but it seems incredibly FAIR that he fought his way into being his own person and was rewarded for it by a job he could do well and with someone who could be a full partner in the same arena.
I voted for Conflict of Honors but it was hard to choose. I read Agent of Change first -- still remember the cover with turtles, which was why I bought it. It is really a toss up for me as to which is my favorite CoH or AoC.
I voted for Ghost Ship because it's the one I've read most recently. But really, I like them all & I can't honestly choose one as "best" overall (though of course different books have different excellent elements).
I started with "Partners in Necessity" and went on to devour the others as they became available. I do remember sending an email to SRM when I was ordering some chap books years ago asking if we would ever learn Pat Rin's story. Within a year or so, there was "I Dare".
While I love all of the books, I think this one edges out most of the others for me because of the personal conflicts he has. And the scene where he goes to Val Con at the end reduces me to tears every time I read it.
There are so many reasons why so many of them are fantastic. I finally rephrased your question to "Which book do you go back and re-read when you need a Liad fix?" to get my answer of I Dare. It is the most comprehensive single story in a single volume. It takes me-the-reader through Pat Rin's development from isolation to love, from tragedy to triumph. None of the other books do it quite the same way in a single volume like I Dare does. Is it my favorite story or plot line? No. But it is my favorite single book.
CoH - the title itself speaks to me, the book even more so. It was the first I read and I feel in love. I re-read it periodically. While I love all the books, this is still my favorite. I loved the honors explored in it and I adored Shan and Priscilla. I wish we saw more of them.
(The Tomorrow Log is a close second of all the books.)
it would be like picking a favorite child...just can't do it, nope nope nope, not even when I'm recommending to others, I just give them the list and say read 'em in order.
That's exactly how I feel. Although I'm currently reading Pratchett to a sick friend and when we finish Wyrd Sisters/Witches Abroad/Maskerade I don't expect my brother will have given back Conflict et al yet, so I'll do Fledgling/Saltation/Ghost Ship, then probably another whack of Pratchett and by then I should have Conflict of Honors back and we can begin properly.
