...Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and at long, long last -- Maine! I make it to be 24 hours of traveling on the yesterday-that-was.

We had a mostly uneventful trip, saving two things of note. The ...aggressively obvious presence of manymany police persons of various ilks and guises in New York Penn Station is worthy of mention. I dern near stepped on a police dog's tail (do the airports feel it necessary to broadcast a message warning travelers not to pet police dogs? I can't believe that's necessary, but clearly Amtrak thinks so). Happily, Whatever It Was that concerned this Massive Gathering of Armed People was focused on the East Gates; the regional train from Penn Station to Boston South Station left from a West Gate.

The second thing worthy of note was the Britney Spears concert last night at the Banknorth Garden -- also known as Boston North Station -- from which the Downeaster departs the city.

The approach to the station was filled with young women wearing high heels, and in various stages of undress and sobriety -- two of whom demanded that I sell them tickets ("Tickets to what?" I thought, not having remembered to check Britney's schedule beforehand) -- loud men pushing t-shirts and demanding payment, and a smattering of your garden variety panhandlers, pickpockets, and street toughs. Once we managed to dodge our way from the sidewalk to the doors of the station, we found cops in great quantities, and from them emanated the subtle suggestion of threat, which was most wonderfully calming.

(I think I forgot to mention that coming into Boston on Wednesday night, on our way to North Carolina, we walked into the chaotic leavings of a Fleetwood Mac concert, including a large fellow who bellowed something unintelligible but heartfelt at us and moved menacingly in our direction. Happily, he was drunk, and we were not, and so he ate our dust, we found a taxi, and all's well that ends that way. Clearly, we need to pay closer attention to the concert schedule at the Garden.)

Upon reaching Portland at ohmighod this morning, we bunked at the Clarion next to the train station. Arising some few hours later to discover a lovely blue and white morning, we breakfasted, then drove down to Old Orchard Beach to pay our respects to the sea before motoring on up to the so-called center of the state, stopping once for a shared sandwich, and once again, for groceries.

The cats were pleased to see us, each immediately demanded hisorher due. We have unpacked, downloaded ridiculous amounts of email, and caught up on the webcomics. Steve has gone off to do his duty as a library trustee, leaving me in charge of remembering to put the pizza in the oven.

StellarCon 33 -- the reason we undertook these two separate, but related -- journeys was wonderful. If you're in the area, you owe it to yourself to check this con out. It was small, but lively (here, look), our fellow guests were a convivial and knowledgeable lot, and I can't remember when a con has taken such warm and personal care of us. Con Manager Warren Buff ([livejournal.com profile] laminahospes) was convivial and approachable. Bill Mann went above and beyond several times, not only getting up at Unreasonable Hours(tm) of the day to pick us up and drop us off at the train station, but leaving the con to fetch us a sandwich when Sunday events suddenly piled up on us. Special thanks are due to Hope Evey ([livejournal.com profile] hopeevey), who was our point-person on the concom and who met every challenge with good humor and good sense.

All of the panels I was on were interesting, even if we did from time to time stray from the core question, and Opening Ceremonies was, I thought, particularly apt. In addition, we were able to spend some time with Barbara Karpel, Glennis LeBlanc ([livejournal.com profile] missingvolume), [livejournal.com profile] elektra_h, Mike Hammond, Susan (whose last name I've just blanked on), Robert and Freda Stearns. In sum? I had a grand, grand time.

Two more things of note before I sign off to herd pizza: Buzzy Multimedia interviewed Steve and me for about 45 minutes on Sunday. Eventually, that interview will be on YouTube. Watch this space for further news on that.

The Baen Traveling Slide Show was also recorded at Stellarcon and will eventually likewise be accessible to those who weren't able to make the con (and those who were able to make the con, too). As soon as I have more information on that, I'll post it here.

...and now...good-night. I have to work tomorrow. Wonder how that'll go?

You would think, as much as I do it, that I'd be better at packing. And you'd be wrong. Mind you, I'm better than I was mumblety years ago, when I practically packed the house to go to BaltiCon, all the way out in Hunt Valley -- and still forgot stuff. But I'm not good at it.

Part of the reason is that I'm spatially challenged. No, really. I've lost several close friends who died laughing while watching me try to pack a picnic basket. Granted, suitcases are easier than picnic lunches, because clothes squish, but that's not nearly as much help as you'd think it would be.

This time, I made a list beforehand, just to make good and dern certain that I wasn't overpacking. List looks reasonable to me. I pulled the things on it and not one thing more put it all in cubes (I love my packing cubes) and then put the cubes in the rolling suitcase that was, in beautiful theory, supposed to serve us both for the weekend. Hah, I say.

Hah.

I'm embarrassed to report that my stuff filled up the suitcase. Not quite an Epic Fail -- I'd hate to have to count the times that I've completely overflowed the suitcase -- but, like I say, embarrassing.

However! Steve, who has seen this go down innumerable times, had foresightfully snagged a 'way too cheap orange Wenger (well, OK, that's why it was cheap) rolling case early this week at TJ Maxx. "What do we need that for?" I asked. "I'm totally not taking anything this time."

Exit Steve, whistling.

So, yes, you saw this coming: I'm packed into the orange case -- and I'll have you know that everything fits! Go, me. Also? The Leewit has all the new working files on her auxiliary brain and I'm ready to go. If I have time tomorrow at work, I may use the thrice-curst scanner to bring my handwritten notes for Mouse and Dragon into an electronic format. Which may or may not work, I guess.

In other news, the mail brought delight in the form of Narbonic Six. Yes! The final volume is now available direct from creator Shaenon K. Garrity ([livejournal.com profile] shaenon) -- right here. Go! Buy one! Buy the whole set! Buy another whole set for your mother -- you know she'll love them!

OK, lots of excitement with the mail, obviously, but wait! There's more!

A UPS pulled in front of the house, the driver being too clever to risk his vehicle in our drive, and lo! we have in house 30 authors' copies of Longeye, just in time to take them to StellarCon and show them off! And show them off we will. *sighs* They sure are purty. We toasted them with milkshakes, because, yanno, milkshakes make every victory that much sweeter.

No writing tonight, of course, what with having to make lists and pack and unpack and repack. And! Still haven't answered the email. When I get back from the con. No, really.

"Is your brother...angry?" Aelliana murmured from her nestle against his chest.

"My brother," Daav told her, with a certain wry humor, "is enjoying himself far too much."

As previously advertised, there's going to be a science fiction convention in High Point, North Carolina from Friday March 13 through Sunday March 15. Holy Cow! That's this coming weekend! It's going to be a fun time -- Mr. Miller and I will be there as Literary Guests of Honor; William Stout as Artist Guest of Honor; and John Wick as Gaming Guest of Honor (Uncle Timmy, the Fan Guest of Honor will not be able to attend, due to the need to recover from surgery -- everybody think Good Thoughts for his quick and complete recovery, please).

In addition to the honored guests, there will be a bunch of interesting folks doing panels, and talking about science fiction and fantasy, among them the ever-amiable Ms. Lee Martindale, the erudite Mr. Alan Wold, and the shy and retiring Mr. John Ringo.

Tonight, we lose an hour of sleep. In order to console myself for this loss, I not only slept in, but took a nap. I have not yet answered my email. Yes, I am a slug. I have hopes for tomorrow.

We are now officially in pre-con pre-prep. Steve has discovered a Biscuit Factory within walking distance of StellarCon's hotel, which sounds...uncommonly dangerous to me. It seems that the hotel serves breakfast, no lunch, and "limited" bar food dinner, so we may be experimenting in that direction. Can anybody recommend a good Italian restaurant in High Point? Greek? Lunch joint? How about a Mongolian Grill?

It does look like it's going to be Quite Warm in Points South at the end of next week. Not as warm as Atlanta in August (my ghod, that was awful!), but -- 72F/22C? In March? I mean, today it was 50F/10C at my house, which was Downright Unnatural. Also? The snow is turning into mud.

I figure I'll get more writing in tomorrow, but Monday and Tuesday will be mostly consumed with running around doing the I-hate-to-pack boogie, putting working files on The Leewit, finding wires and con clothes and freaking out the cats. We'll be handing the keys over to the house-sitter on Wednesday afternoon, traveling down to Boston, over-nighting there, then ridin' 16 hours with nothin' much to do, arriving at High Point in the wee small hours of Friday morning.

There will then be a Con. I'm greatly looking forward to StellarCon; especially since I had to miss Boskone this year, and because we get South so seldom. We'll be doing an interview, panels, and a reading, swanking around with our fellow Guests of Honor, and just having a blast. Come on by, if you can. It's going to be fun!
