Today, it snowed. For some values of snow. It has for the moment ceased snowing, having deposited no significant amounts anywhere within sight of my office windows. There's a winter weather advisory in force from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. tomorrow promising one hundred percent chance of ice storm and assorted Ick. The long-range looks wintery in the extreme, which would be alright (it is, after all, January), if only I'd had time to prepare. Last Sunday, it was 44F (6C) -- heck, yesterday it was 41F (5C) -- and I was puttering around outside in shirt sleeves. Note to self: Remember to wear your coat tomorrow.

Once again, I spent most of the day writing, Mozart at my side and in my lap. I did make one brief foray into Second Life, where Kit Jimenez performed Shopping Therapy.

Tomorrow starts the day-job. Fingers crossed, everybody. I'm out of practice with the whole um, workplace conformity thing.

Best of luck to you in doing the workplace thing. Don't forget to pack a lunch that can hide in a large handbag. It is going to be too ugly to go out anyway. Freezing rain -- my least favorite.

Good luck. I hope you find friendly co-workers, informative and helpful trainers and polite clients.

Good luck. Also with the weather.

It is 40 outside. Forty. In the SF Bay Area. That's just not right (for some values of right). And then I read that you go out in shirtsleeves and I think, "Does everyone who lives in snowy climates have all of the nerves frozen off of their skin at an early age?" Because I have to wear at least two sweaters under my heavy coat with muffler and insulated gloves and a hat, and sometimes I'm still cold. I suspect Mainers would point and laugh.

I live in England, which hasn't had a snowy climate since I was a kid. I wear shirts (and no (under)vest), and they have short sleeves. If I wear long sleeves then I overheat drastically (when it rains I have a dilemma -- wear a coat and get soaked by sweat or no coat and get soaked by rain? The latter is cleaner...).

My lounge temperature at the moment is a comfortable 15-18C (59 to 64F), and that is a bit too hot for me at night, I often sleep on top of the covers (my bedroom temperature tends to be between 58 and 62F). My central heating system hasn't worked for over 3 years and I'm not paying out for a new one (it's well over 20 years old) to just sit there and not be used.

I could, however, do with a good air-conditioning system to keep the temperature below 70F in the summer...

My sister is an associate prof in the SoCal area. I mostly envy her the hours and flexibility of her time. Even with all the pressures her job looks a lot more fun than mine as a public school speech therapist. So you go Sharon. I taught at CSULA for two years for extra money and I loved it.

Winter has descended suddenly here in Michigan too, with freezing rain and/or drizzle interspersed with rain or sleet for the past few days. I've gotten to chisel the ice off my car windows 3 mornings in a row now, and on Saturday I almost had to climb into the car from the passenger side, since the drivers side door didn't want to open.

Got to dodge a couple of small tree branches in the road on the way to work today, and passed one spot where they'd obviously just finished clearing something larger with a chainsaw. Only one of the traffic lights on my route was out of comission, and both home and work still have power so far.

Scout and soldier?

I just re-read Carpe Diem, with that wonderful part where they are being driven into town, and look around at the world as Scout and soldier, carefully observing directions and so forth. With that kind of background, a little office environment gameplaying should be a piece of pie (no, that's cake, isn't it? Okay, eat whatever you like, just take it easy, listen and watch, and enjoy :-)

Rolanni,

Just what are you going to teach? Journalism? Introduction to writing? The novel approach? Whatever, make sure they can write legibly (silly me, they all use computers). Anyway, a little grammer does not come amiss. I once knew an engineer who typed his rough drafts for transcription, the only person I ever knew who could type illegibly!
