Thanks to everyone who chimed in with Droid apps and ideas!  I think I’m pretty well set for connectivity and entertainment on the Great Train Ride West.

The NPR Too-100 Science Fiction, Fantasy Poll is still on-going. Go on over and vote! for your Ten Most Favorite SF/F books/series, ever. Yes, The Liaden Universe® is a contender.

At Eagles Over the Kennebec there’s a poll and essay test ongoing.  The poll is open to “everyone,” but apparently LiveJournal means something different when it says “everyone” than I do.  In any case, if you can’t see the radio buttons, do feel free to leave a comment about your favorite title and why it’s your favorite.

WorldCon prep is starting to heat up.  I need another week, but I ain’t gonna get it.  Before we leave, I need to:

1.  Pick up Hex’s ashes in Lewiston
1a. Prepare Cat Garden to receive same
2. Finish proofing the galleys for Mouse and Dragon
3. Finish critiquing the submissions for our section of the WorldCon Writing Workshop
4. Do prep for the panel I’m moderating
5. Get a haircut
6. Make sure The Leewit has the latest edition of George on her SDcard, and the notes for “Guaranteed Delivery”
7. Write an essay — or is Steve writing the essay? Must check
8. Complete various travel-related errands at Staples, the bank, Sign of the Sun, Hannaford, CVS and other fine merchants
9. Have and recover from pre-departure panic attack
10. Pack
10a. Find all pertinent wires
11. Upload “Kin Ties” to Splinter Universe
12. Make sure the vet has cat sitter’s name on file as holding Mozart and Scrabble’s power of attorney while we’re gone
13. Turn over keys, house, and felines to same cat sitter

Eep.

So! Who’s going to WorldCon?

Yesterday. . .was not a good day. It was dramatically brought to our attention Friday night that Hexapuma was very ill, after having shown some improvement earlier in the week. Our vet was out of the office, so Saturday morning we made the hour-run down to Lewiston and the Animal Emergency Clinic.

The diagnosis was acute kidney failure — lots of red numbers on the blood count graph. The vet gave Hex a “very short time” which he defined in a few weeks of degrading kidney function. It wasn’t something that was going to get better; and there was nothing we could do to ease his last days. All that being so, Steve and I made the decision to let him go, and stayed to see him safely across the Bridge.

May I just say that, if it ever comes a time when such a decision needs to made on my behalf, I would wish for the same gentle care and empathy Hex received from Dr. Braeuer and his staff.

I was astonished to see that Hex had been with us for less than three years of his not-quite-five. It seems as if he’s been part of the Cat Farm forever.

…and so he shall be.

Migraine-like headache set in by the end of the day. Took minor league drugs. Made lentil and carrot soup, and rice, against the necessity of having something to take for lunch for the rest of the week. Napped on couch, with Hexapuma for a stomach-warmer. Boy, that cat gives good nap. Have not, dare I say, finished proofing Ghost Ship. And will not be looking at a screen for many more minutes, either.

Everybody have a good evening.
rolanni: (Marvin's not happy)
Today? Was a Day from Hell. Eight-point-five hours of inputting, with breaks for filing what I'd put in, then meeting Steve at the vet's office, where Scrabble and Mozart were pronounced fit and given their vaccines. Hexapuma was not given his vaccines. Hexampuma has to go back on Thursday morning for Tests.

My hands hurt. A lot. There will be no typing on George this evening, [insert expletive of your choice here].

Plans for the evening? Well. I have a Dortmunder novel, and I'm not afraid to read it.
rolanni: (Yay!)

Today is Hexapuma’s fourth birthday, but that’s not slowing him down.  He’s already celebrated with the bears:

Can I help?

Hexapuma was. . .interested in the hotel room. He Explored. He found the route from the floor to the desk chair, to the desk, to the microwave, to the top of the entertainment center, and proved it. He likewise found and proved the Alternate Descent direct leap from the top of the entertainment center to the bed. He found the temporary cat box and made it his own; he drank water. He prowled. He sat with Steve and I while we had a snack, and when I woke up in the early morning, he was tucked against my stomach, wide awake and watching the door to the hall.

I think I need to stop reading him urban fantasy.

In the morning, Veronica asked if she could meet "our kitty" so we took him down to the desk, where his public -- Veronica, a woman who might have been the sales manager and one of the maintenance guys -- presented their best wishes for a speedy and successful operation, and oohed and ahed over how beautiful he was. He accepted his rightful adoration with calm and presence, and made sure that he allowed everyone the chance to stroke him.

Then it was time to go. The folks at Portland Veterinary Specialists were wonderful. Dr. Kern made sure we understood the procedure exactly and was patient with questions. We left Hex, reluctantly, expecting to pick him up around five. At loose ends, sort of, we went to Borders, where we signed the two Fledglings they had in-store, after Steve urged the staff to get them down from "up-stock" and put them on the shelves; and I bought books, despite there being no money in the budget to buy books this year.

After Borders, we spaced around the Maine Mall, and took spaghetti and chicken back to the room (among her other good works, Veronica had put us on 2 p.m. checkout, so we could have a base, as she put it, and not have to drive around Portland all day with our luggage in the car). Just as we finished lunch, the doctor called to let us know that Hex was out of surgery and that we could pick him up around 2:30. This we did, after talking with the doctor and reviewing our instructions. The Hexacat had been growing a polyp farm in his left ear, and there were appalling amounts of Bad Stuff to be drained from below the bone. Hex now has a "pirate earring" drain, which may come out on Saturday (pending confirmation from Dr. Slack, our regular vet, tomorrow), or Monday, at latest. He is wearing the Cone of Shame, alas, and not being very patient with it. That stays on until the earring is gone, to prevent messy accidents. We have pain meds to give, and, realsoonnow, a pressure bandage to remove from over the site of the IV.

The bill. . .ouch.

I say again: ouch.

Steve had said that SRM Publisher might need to put out an expanded Hexapuma Relief Fund edition of The Cat's Job to cover expenses. I'd say we're into the territory of the imperative on that front. Watch this space -- and also Journeyman

We are all home now, and all exhausted. Scrabble has not bopped Hex in the head, which I think may be a record.

Hex is back from his adventure at the vet's, somewhat confused and jittery, which I lay at the feet of the painkillers. We have Baytril (antibiotic) pills, to give by mouth, and drops to be administered in both ears, starting tomorrow. Not looking forward to that, actually, his ear's gotta smart. Of course, we also have painkiller drops. I guess the drill is: painkiller, wait, ear drops, pill.

The operation went well; the polyp was removed clean, and the vet is pleased. I'm thinking that Hex's hearing may improve somewhat, since the growth was obstructing the canal in his good ear.

He's snacking a little now; I hope he'll curl up in his chair and get some sleep...

So, no; I didn't finish writing "Shadow Partner" today. Instead, I wrote Chapter Thirty-One of Saltation while Steve put out fires elsewhere. Also? Started the laundry. And! Will finish the day off big, by writing SRM consignment checks.

The glamour around here; we order it in by the pallet-load.

Hexapuma has now been with us for thirteen days and a smidge. He and Mozart seem to have come to an accommodation, though there are certain things that Mo still needs to Explain. Scrabble has not resigned herself to another Large Gray Cat in the house, a situation that is exacerbated by the fact that Hex is deaf in one ear and doesn't seem always to understand when the Pretty Lady is yelling at him. Matters are not helped by Scrabble insisting on running away, screaming. I feel certain that if she would stand her ground just once and whack him a good one right on his punkinhaid, Comprehension would dawn.

On a related note, we find that Hex enjoys Jackie Chan; he had a heckuva good time viewing "The Forbidden Kingdom" Friday night, as I did, mostly. Please remind me never to be a female love interest in a Chinese movie.

Tomorrow is Monday, alas. On the bright side, the details for the concert that have been consuming unreasonable amounts of my time for the last month is now over. I have things in queue behind it, but (here's hoping) none of the pending projects are as nerve-wracking as the concert thingy.

Well. *takes a breath* Maybe I'll finish "Shadow Partner" tomorrow night while Steve's at chess. Yeah, that's the ticket.

By Popular Demand!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present here for your viewing pleasure, a portrait of Hexapuma, with Rolanni's knee. Which was not as easy to get as you might imagine.

So, AlbaCon was a blast. We had managed to miss the last couple, what with one thing and a day-job, and it was good to re-connect to folks I hadn't seen in 'way too long. The before-con signing with Eric Flint and Ryk E. Spoor went well, with a lively panel-like conversation to warm us all up. And! We sold us some books.

Because we have All Those Books in the basement, SRM Publisher took a dealer's table at the con -- another thing we hadn't done in several years. Got a chance to sharpen up my arithmetic skills, so it's all good. And! We sold us some books.

Despite paneling and partying and huxtering, we managed to take a couple of walks around the city in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Albany must be the Queen of city parks. Our Sunday morning walk took us to three, including a very handsome little pocket park behind City Hall, and we were never more than four blocks from the hotel.

Monday following the con -- that would have been yesterday -- we motored away from Albany in the opposite direction to home, arriving nine-fifteenish at the Neptune Grill in Beautiful Downtown Oneonta. There, after a convivial and much-needed breakfast with Elektra of Blue Blaze Cattery, we repaired to the parking lot and moved Blue Blaze Sphinxian Hexapuma from the Official Blueblazemobile to Argent the Subaru -- and set off North and East, arriving at the Cat Farm and Confusion Factory a little after 7 p.m.

Scrabble and Mozart are still ...puzzled. This is the first time we've come back from a convention with a cat, after all. Mozart spent last night under the bed instead of in his preferred position on top of it, though he did emerge this morning to jump in my lap and have the comics read to him, as is his habit. Scrabble displays a wearisome tendency to hiss and scream whenever Hexapuma wanders in her direction. The high point of that being this morning, when she jumped up on the microwave cart/ex-computer-stand in Steve's room, and curled 'round on her specially placed fleece blanket for the after-breakfast nap. Hex thought that blanket looked pretty darn good, all blue and fluffy and elephanty -- and somebody to sleep with didn't seem like a bad idea at all.

Scrabble, alas, prefers to sleep alone.

In other news, I did go to the day-job today, which may not have been the smart thing to do. Con-energy is entirely the Wrong Sort for a departmental secretary. On the other hand, I didn't actually kill anybody...
